White Scar Successors

Hi all,  

 

I'm getting back into 40k after a nearly 20 yr hiatus and am about 75% of my way through painting my marines.  

 

I love the White Scars playstyle and iconography, but for fluff reasons, I would rather build my own chapter rather than pure WS.  I appreciate this probably isnt the best for playstyle ( no Khan for example) but it means I can paint how I want.

 

I originally was going to just run Inheritors of the Primarch and play exact WS but I then thought of running Born Heroes & Whirlwind of rage or swapping one out for Hungry for Battle.

 

The only negatives I see is that it would be a little bit slower and can't fall back and charge being a big one, but based on the below list, my approach is already very fast and can get around the board at speed.  It is very reactive with heavy board presence and with the ST it becomes a melee beast on T3.  

 

I'm open to any critique of this approach, as I've only played one game since being back into this, so the pure WS may be a much better option.

Whirlwind of Rage is unmodified 6s, so Born Heroes doesn't help you trigger it more. Statistically they are basically the same thing once you're rolling 6+ attacks.

 

with the chapter tactics making you all in on assault, I feel like you could sprinkle in some more power fists as hitting on 3s, then getting an extra hit on a 6 (so hitting on 2s) is hella scary and should provide you with great anti tank and multi wound in combat, especially when the super doctrine kicks in. S8 -4 AP  3D is a great profile. 

 

I like that the shooting support has a decent spread also.

 

You may just find, though, that you simply aren't as fast as you expect to be. Advance and charge extends the threat so much. even for the meltabikes and the inceptors.

Cheers for the reply.  I certainly agree that statistically the 2 ST are the same, but together they can be very scary.  But obviously, I'm putting a lot of eggs in one basket with that approach.  

 

I had toyed with the idea of a another 5 man thunder hammer/power first vanguard vets squat, to take advantage of what you mentioned.  My chapter master is basically there to just tank/monster hunt & tie up shooting elements with master of snares & with the combo of tactics and warlord traits, he can be scary, espeically once the assualt doctrine kicks in.  6 attacks at S8 -3 D5, htting on 2s and wounding on 3s worst case.. re-rolling 1st to hit and potentially more attacks with 6s.  

 

I just need to finish painting these guys and then I've got some battles lined up against Custodes and Alpha legion, which should be fun to test out this approach

A White Scars Successor Chapter has the potential to deep strike with a +4” charge. Take Vanguard Veterans with Jump Packs and Lightning Claws, add a Librarian with Jump Pack with Plume of the Plainstrider and Ride the Winds and Storm Wreathed psychic powers, add the Successor trait Hungry for Battle, yeah things will die. Your Vanguard now charge while immune to Overwatch, add 4” to their charge roll, and it’s relatively cheap and easy to do.
