AdMech (Defense Cohort, etc) - Warzone Charadon

Hey folks,

Has anyone tried this yet for Admech?

I've just received my copy and read through it... I really want to deep dive into the background; it looks like a fun read.

The thing I was really looking forward to was the Defense Cohort but WOW is it restrictive. I understand the hesitation since we had disastrous 'specialty detachments' in 7th, but when I fully went through all the units you can't use, it became apparent that board control is going to be a huge challenge.

I am putting together a list for a game this week. Not sure if this is really playable to be honest. Some neato add ons for old units, but some serious limitations as well. I'll probably go Mars for Wrath of Mars on bots, and Cawl's aura. Not having the double Canticle on the majority of units kind of stinks but is understandable.

Metallica looks like a lot of fun and oddly enough seems to largely benefit all the stuff you -can't- use in the Defense Cohort! Lots of good strats, and I love the Pistol relic. (4 damage!)

I haven't really done a deep dive on the Knight stuff yet.

I don't own the book yet but I think I would really struggle with the restrictions since most of my army favours the Skitarii aspects of the Codex. I have two squads of minimum size Kataphrons, two Kastelans, five Corpuscarii and  a handful of Tech Priests. I never leaned into the Breacher-heavy servitor army so it wouldn't really work for me.

I'd like to get the book for lore purposes though.

Yeah my army is 50% Skitarii so wont be running this anytime soon. Looks like your benefits will be great for shooting (esp first turn), but boy are you gonna be slow with zero transport access or deepstrike.

Realistically your looking at running something like this I guess

Cawl

Techpriest

Kastellan Robots x4

2x 8 Breachers

1x 6 Grav Destroyers

3x 10 Priests

Alternatively drop cawl and run stygies, as you are getting some good shooting bonus from the defence cohort anyway, and the -1 to hit is gonna be useful on the advancing priests.

But yeah, not filling out that model quota anytime soon :teehee:

Metallica stuff seems fun/fluffy. Some good stuff if you want to run mass vanguard!

Yeah...with those restrictions, I'm not running that any time soon. Neither can I make a varied army with it, nor do I find the stand-and-shoot approach particularly interesting.

Techpriests? Check.

Massed kataphrons? Check.

Bots? Nope.

Electro priests? Nope.

That would be a damn boring army...

I don't know... I read it that you can take the priests.

I am not going to write it off yet. I'm putting my list together for a game shortly and I'll see how it plays out.

It's designed in such a way that it should play fairly defensive... ironically! Which could be big. Right now I'm getting to other board edges with the use of pure glass type, speedy Skitarii units so this will be very, very different for my playstyle.

Right now I've got 6 Destroyers ready to go. I am about 3 Breechers short of the 12 I wanted to try so I may have to proxy a bit. I'll try it at least once.

The Metalica stuff looks fun too, especially with Raven. I hope to try that as well.

That was a bit unclear on my part - I was going through what models I have that are still allowed. And it basically boils down to those 4 types, as well as the flyers (which I've missed, but which are not skitarii). But having neither bots nor electro priests on my shelf cuts the possible lists down so far, it makes no sense for me at all.

Ah I see.

For sure it is restrictive.

A lot of those models I own, but don't always use. In fact I recently admitted to not using Kastalans. I got tired of the points they use, and therefore sticking you in a confined list design.

The one thing I never got into was the heavy Breecher lists. I have used a lot of the Destroyers... but not Breechers.

What I'm hoping is a medium Kastalan squad, for your back field, and a large pile of the Breechers will actually open up aggressive play a bit. I'm going to be giving them all a 5++ FNP, and Arc weaponry, and go hunting for objective markers.

If this playstyle works, it might sway me towards the list design. Having -1 Damage with aggressive Obsec squads sitting on objective markers, might be fun, and playable. Or so I hope.

  • 5 weeks later...

If they ever introduce 30k units, THEN this would be a really fun detachment.  In fact, I played a narrative game the other day using both, thanks to fanmade Fires of Cyraxus 9th edition rules.  The army looked freaking epic.  Even though I like a lot of the 40k models, an army of only servitors/robots is my dream.

"So, does the Ordinatus count as in the deployment zone or not? Because it's too long to fit entirely...well, maybe sideways."

My favourite one is the Ulator and I've had my eye on it for ages but it's hard to justify a shelf ornament at that size. Since FW seem to be discontinuing things nearly at random it's hard to know what to hold off on and what to buy.
