Landspeeders, how to run them?

Recommended Posts

So I've ended up with roughly 10-12 plastic speeders as they're dirt cheap on ebay.

Question now is, what's the best way to run them?

Hb or meltas? Do I make a themed army list with them? (jet bikes or bikers list)

Do they have a role in any regular list?

They're probably gonna end up being SoH or Iron warriors I think, if that makes any difference?

Most competitive option IMO is to deep strike them with graviton and multi melta. They'll destroy almost any vehicle you drop them next to assuming you don't have terrible luck.

Since you first deploy your vehicle and then scatter it is a terrible idea to do so because more often then not you have no line of sight after scattering. In addition to that it is possible that they arrive at turn 3 and if you play 10 of them that's a huge portion of your points missing the first two turns.

I'd give them Gravguns and deploy them. First turn kill one vehicle and be done with it.

Is that it then, one and done? They not likely to survive any longer?

How would you model grav on the plastic speeders?

I removed the grip from a Grav-Gun and glued it under the nose of the speeder. Problem is they are no longer available at FW.

They aren't at all survivable with AV10 on all sides. They can reliably be boltered to death.

A javelin makes a mockery of the land speeder really.

I load mine up with melta and grav and try to glance things to death

Well that's a shame to hear. I may well try to do an all bike/speeder army just for fun as I've ended up with plenty of them

Grav wise I got a number of them before they went oop, so that's easy enough

It's not thatthe Speeder is a bad unit. Far from it. It's just that the Javelin is better. So no worries fielding them.

Yeah, perhaps poor phrasing on my part. The land speeder is OK, it's just not the javelin.

It's also not the sabre, another unit that is just so much better for roughly the same points as the speeder.

Is it good, it's OK. It's just not better than other things that are the same value in the fast attack slot.

You can easily build the list to support them with command rhino/proteus/nuncio vox. Especially if there's going be 10, it's worth the help.

I'm not sure what you mean about no LoS. Unless you're playing on an extremely dense terrain board, they'll still most likely have a shot, even if the vehicle does get cover.

Deploying them is just asking for them to die, or have to jink. Which at that point they might as well be dead.

Well it's because hull mounted weapons only have a 22.5 degree swing to the left or right for a total of 45 degrees of firing arc. When deepstriking vehicles you declare facing before scatter and it's locked in that manner, so depending on the proximity a marginal scatter can completely screw you.

Now my take on normal landspeeder squads is weird, though I've shared it before around here. Keep them cheap; if you really want to give them hunter killers, but stick with the heavy flamer otherwise. And then use your squadron of 5 to block your opponents movement from the very start of the game. This might seem like a waste of points, but it's only 200 to have 10 hullpoints across 5 speeders that can jink to halve incoming damage. No one is prepared to be penned in by 10 land speeders and most melee options rely on a transport; if they get out of the transport to fight you, they lose two turns of moving in that transport.

Normal land speeders aren't going to outperform javelins as gun ships, and rely on a really skewed list to make deep strike anything but a joke, but are a perfect suicide road block.

One other thing to think about is that people hate to "waste" shots on speeders as there usually are bigger threats to go after. I play Ravenwing and the speeders get ignored until they start doing any heavy lifting, tactical squads will almost always try to ping them to death that being said. Heavy weapons tend to go after jetbikes, javelin, outriders and javelin. Yes I know I mention javelin twice!

Is the lascannon of the Javelin really that much better of an anti-tank weapon compared to the graviton? Or is it the survivability that elevates the javelin above the bog standart one?

You take the twin linked cyclone, add a MM and two missles and voila got yourself an awesome tank hunter.

But yes, the graviton is way better at stealing hull points than a lascannon.

In general the Javelin is superior to a speeder, because it has strafing run, graviton backlash, more armor and better weapons for 15 points.

It's not even a competition.

3 graviton + multi melta land speeder in DS with a DS-likable rite or Damocles ;)

They're utterly riddiculous

It's ridiculous that you get three Javelins with MM, outflank, strafing run and grav-backlash for the same :cussing points. Outflank meaning you don't have to jeopordize the unit by using deep strike and don't need to buy a Damokles.

But yes, if you don't have Javelins at hand that is exactly the loadout I always take for them. Haywire is just a nice rule to kill tanks.

As a german I can (and will) burst out Wagner full lungs at any given time without anyone taking notice.

It's just part of our cultur that this happens from time to time.
