Tactics vs Custodes

Recommended Posts

So I recently beat Custodes pretty handily at 500pts with my army only losing a few assault intercessors. This prompted some smack talk and the Custodes player, who I tabled, to later say I got lucky and challenged me to a larger game here in the near future. I’m sure if was in good fun but I’d like to prove it was my tactics that led to victory not luck. So I’ve been thinking if he wants to play stupid games then he should win stupid prizes!

I’ve been thinking about what my strategy would be for handling a larger Custodes army.

First, Min size squads and cyber wolves to complete objectives since that is what the game is actually about and he’ll have less models and I can spread him out to prevent him from easily using his heroic abilities.

Second, I know his units are tough with great invul saves and there is a couple ways I can deal with them. Throw tons of attacks at them and suicide a Null zone Rune priest at them and steal their invulns for at least 1 turn. Ill need to make sure to kill any sisters of silence he brings to stop them from ruining my powers.

Third I’ll also need to target any Vexillas he may have as best I can. To prevent his teleport homer ability and -1 to hit bubble.

Fourth, I’ll bring a full squad of eradicators and shoot down and tanks or telemon dreads I can. The regular custodian guard were easy enough to kill with tons of chain swords when last we played. I’ll be cagey with my Wulfen now that he knows how dangerous they are and I’ll bring two squads and keep them out of LOS and aim to either counter charge or 6” heroic. I’ll probably bring some infiltrators to hide and limit his deepstrike ability mid board. I think I need to aim for and being patient and reacting to what he does. If I go all in right away he’ll hurt my units too soon.

Thoughts?

They have access to transhuman on any unit so they can make 1 super tanky as needed

They also have 3++ on units with SS (custodes rule improving the 4++ by 1)

And shadowkeeper telemon will be wounded by eradicators on 5s (s-1)

Finally they can turn off all rerolls

The key to fighting custodes is to hunt like real life wolves

Play the primary and threaten all objectives

Pounce with multiple units where he is weak and pull him down with weight of attacks

If you are custom building then the MC TH is good and so is a combat chaplain with benediction of fury and mantra of strength

All that being said...I think SW match up well v custodes and savage fury helps with their T5

Game is set for today.

I’m playing a 1k game vs Custodes with my wolves successors. I tabled him with very little loss at 500pts and now he wants revenge. The trans human will only be a factor vs the Wulfen and eradicators. Do they have ways to make me fight last? I will also be bringing three ways for them to fight last. With murderous hurricane, the Judiciar, and the armor of Russ.

I love my Wulfen and they preform amazingly. However I’m wondering if I should take bladeguard instead for the durability. They have a better save and can use transhuman. Additionally I can use stratagem and rerolls on them. They just don’t do as much damage. Also perhaps I should take rites of war on the Libby. I liked the idea of the Judiciar being S8 but perhaps Libby with rites combined with the bladeguard would be better.

Another victory for my space wolfl for successors. Although mistakes were made I still won 63 to 58. We use player placed terrain at my FLGS. I chose warrior pride, assassinate, and domination for secondaries. My opponent was clever and created bottle necks on the left and right sides of the field. As he was able to go first he positioned his forces on the other side of the bottle necks preventing me from scoring domination. He also zoned out my eradicators from being able to outflank. Over the course of game I failed several very attainable charges. I did well on primary scoring 10 points until the last rd where I scored 15. I maxed out warrior pride, earned 3 for assasinate, and earned nothing for domination. In hind sight the mission we played had 6 objectives making domination a bad choice. Assasinate was also difficult with his characters all being tough and protected by his other models and his deployment. I also need to remind my self to be patient. I got to be over zealous and lost my chapter master for no reason. Should have definitely remembered the dog pile idea sooner. Other takeaways to note: making opponent fight last is still just incredible and Custodes hate that as every body lost matters. The Wulfen continue to punch super hard and above their weight and are a great distraction. They killed 5 Sagittarium, a contemptor, and his shield captain warlord tough guy. Such a great counter charge unit. Librarian had storm caller on them all game, until his demise, making them durable. However My opponent was able to deny or resist murderous Hurricane every turn with stratagems. I will probably take engage on all fronts next time and probably start my eradicators on the board out of LOS if he takes another foot slogging army. I would have scored more points and gotten an extra could rds of shooting out of them. I should have won by much more and feel that secondaries really screwed me. Cyberwolves keep bringing home the primary points win. Edited by TheUnlikelyGamer84
