UM tenth company blog

Hi guys

so a group of buds got tickets for LGT in December and Ive decided to get in on it.

Given the time frame i think my phobos primaris project is the only thing i can get painted in time.

Given i haven't even played 9th yet properly (thanks mr Covid), i want to make a log to discuss my progress, what ive painted, army lists and general tactical advice for a budding UM player, and given ive only 7 months to learn all this im asking for input and help from this wonderful group.

ive done a test model still WIP

GnkMkPu.jpg

So as always im limited to the primaris phobos theme but did include some vanguard units (the suppressors) otherwise armour would wreck me. Happy to consider other options and advice if its passable within the theme.

First draft of army list is as follows (i own these models currently)

Captain Antilochus in Phobos armour

Lt Aretus in Reiver armour (warlord)

-soldiers blade

-imperiums sword

5 incursors

5 incursors

5 infiltrators

5 infiltrators

5 infiltrators

Invictor tactical warsuit (ironhail autocannon)

Invictor tactical warsuit (ironhail autocannon)

Invictor tactical warsuit (ironhail autocannon)

5 reivers (bolt carbine)

5 reivers (pistol/blade)

5 reivers (pistol/blade)

3 suppressors

3 suppressors

3 eliminators

3 eliminators

3 eliminators (las fusil)

What are thoughts on the list?

what secondary's do you recommend for matched play?

Reivers dont get concealed deployment, is it worth 2 CP to outlfank both 5 man squads and the LT, or should i switch a second unit to carbines and have only 5 with the Lt?

Test unit looks ace!

Army composition will be tricky aar you've locked into Phobos.

I've wanted Reivers to be useful since launch, I've got 20 of them. However for the points I think you're better off with more troops.

There are other far more experienced players that I'm sure will chime in.

I'm excited to see your force grow.

thanks Mel.

Reivers area in a tough spot, the -2ap pistols are great as is the -ld debuff, but they lack in reliable delivery system and arent as good in combat until T3 onwards.

against lightly armoured infantry i think they could be half decent, but am relying on outflank to use them in this list.

i do have another 5 infiltrators and a phobos Lt if the reiver Lt turns out to be rubbish

Reivers can play tag team with a phobos librarian with Psychic Assault. If a Reiver Lt is nearby the leadership penalties can stack if memory serves, but even if it does not, it's still a decent amount of Mortal Wounds that can be unleashed.

I would suggest going for Lasfusil as much as possible on the Eliminators and including a Scout sniper squad if you want character hunting. Unfortunately, Eliminators don't deliver as much as we'd hope for without significant investment, at least the bolt sniper rifle ones don't. As such, I would suggest taking as much advantage as you can from the their BS2 and the Ultramarines Chapter Doctrine and cover your anti tank a bit more with Lasfusils. Then again, I really like snipers so if you want the character hunting capabilities of the Tenth, I'd say go for a big squad of Scouts with sniper rifles and fish for those 6s.

Hi,

I´m thinking about a similar project and things I´d like to add are:

  • Storm Speeders, cause they look ace. They aren´t PHOBOS or Vanguard, but I think they fit the theme od a lightly armoured, fast (re)deploy force.
  • An assassine of some kind. Either the Psi hunting one or the melee centric one (Eversor?), but if you like to go with lots of snipers, then the sniper dude might fit as well. Though I´ve never feared the sniper assassine when I faced it on the other side of the board.

Concerning secondaries:

  • An argument can be made wether you should leave all your vehicles at home. That way your opponent also misses easy to achieve secondaries.
  • With lots of troops and some to be outflanked, deploy scramblers and engage on all fronts spring to mind.
  • If you avoid using psykers you can also head towards that psyker hunting secondary, though you´ll need reliable character hunters then (assassine of some kind?)

Other than that: I like your project! Good luck and have lots of fun!

BTW: it is not exactly what you´re trying to achieve, though this batrep might be intresting for you:

It´s a force that has a very similar theme. During army introduction they also talk about tactics which is pretty informative. Just have a look at it!

Army list is the thing im happiest to change so i may drop the invictors in time, i feel they do offer quite a lot of dakka for their points, and their ability to deploy in the opponents face, mean they will take all the early firepower. Probably be dead by turn 2 though.

The only other way i can squeeze in the anti tank firepower is with 3 units of las fusil elims, but then id have to take scout snipers to fill that sniping role.

An assassin is a great idea, might be something i can be convinced to try :)

Good to see your 10th Company getting more thematic appropriate teeth these days. I still remember the days of your 10th making do over with self imposed limitations for theme and getting quite effective.

I'm not a fan of Space Marine Scouts in general in the latest edition due to their location in the Elites (ouch) but that's compared to a full Marine list.

Melta Land Speeder Storms with Combi-Melta Scout teams could help anti-tank potentially for you and be relatively cheap?

I would make room for these assets by dropping Reivers. I just can't stand them.

I think a 10th Company list with Storms will do well to have 3 Invictor Warsuits also, since they'll be soaking attention etc.

Yeah I love my self imposed limitations, because the game isn't difficult enough :tongue.:

Weirdly this advice is identical to what i got from a friend, we come up with this list:

Phobos captain

-Vox espiritum

-Warlord: master marksman (becuase the serious geeks planted this in my brain recently)

-exemplar of the chapter: adept of the codex

Sergeant Telion

incursor squad

incursor squad

incursor squad

incursor squad

Infiltrator sqaud

Infiltrator squad

Invictor warsuit

Invictor warsuit

Invictor warsuit

5 scouts

-HB

-Combi-melta

LSS

5 scouts
-HB
-Combi-melta
LSS

5 scouts
-snipers
ML

Eliminator squad
-Las fusil
Eliminator squad
Eliminator squad

ill paint the common elements, troops choices and captain etc, whilst i playtest different options
edit: Doesnt appear that storms equipment can be upgraded anymore

Ah fudge, didn't realise the Multi-melta on the Storm option was removed!

Well the Melta on the Sergeant is still pretty good, especially as can be fired every turn nowadays.

I actually think you can get some mileage out of lists like this now it isn't just killhammer. Secondaries let's you get across the board and score points after all.

Regarding the Captain... yeah that Serious Geeks fella has a point about the sniper variant ;) attractive sounding voice too!

Yeah i think storms will be low on target priority now, and the extra movement will come in handy.

With the ability to swamp the midfield early and enough omni-scramblers to deny DS, i should manage the objective game pretty well to start. and can always outflank the storms, although the 6" deploy when they come on is a bit naff.

Ill probably just hide them or take long range shots with dual hb until they are needed.

it is a very sniper heavy list, with the two characters and 3 sniper units, should take out characters pretty quick

If you play Sergeant Telion, I would definitely try to bump the Sniper Scouts to 10-man. I'll stand by my previous comment and recommend you upgrade at least another Eliminator Squad to Lasfusil. You can drop the Missile launcher from the Scouts, it won't help that much in the long run.

Yeah that's a shame the Landspeeder Storm can no longer be upgraded, a Multimelta would have come in handy!

Master Marksman on the Phobos Captain is tricky since the bolter only has Str4, so against a vast majority of characters and units in the game, it will only wound on 5s... Except against some factions like Aeldarii, Astra Militarum, Sisters of Battle... or if you can find a way to boost your wound roll. For that, I would suggest you switch the Vox Esperitum to Seal of Oath. It will help almost all your army, not just the Captain and give you the a little more humpf against a critical target.

Otherwise, I think this list a some potential if played cleverly and with Primary and Secondary objectives in mind. You won't win a protracted fight, either in melee or shooting, and you won't be able to obliterate parts of your opponent's army each turn. But you will be able adapt and react to your opponent effectively. In fact, I would suggest you try Lord of Deceit for your Captain - this would let you redeploy up to 6 units when combined with Rapid Redeployment. That could put some serious dent into some opponent's battle plan. Also, don't hesitate to put units in Strategic Reserves and force your opponent to make hard choices latter on.

some great points there.

Lord of deceit is not as good as rapid redeployment though, is it?

they work at different points, MoD after both sides have deployed but before 1st turn roll, RR after roll off, which has more utility, although i might be wrong.

id probably have to drop an incursor squad, but the other changes are doable, am a little concerned with 10 man sqauds with blast weapons all the rage atm, but 2+ save in cover is not to be sniffed at

I think you are right regarding RR and Lord of Deceit and yes, Lord of Deceit is less flexible than the Strat. But it will give you options and your opponents something to think about during deployment.

I would not worry too much about the Scouts - they're a nice distraction unit, nothing more. At best, they will deal some mortal wounds here and there, finish off small unist/characters, etc., but they're not here for their dmg output. In fact, I was thinking about using them to occupy the board during deployment and zone out ennemy infiltrators. Then you can redeploy them through RR. They could also be setup in reserves. With their low PL, it only cost 1 CP for a 10-man squad, so 2 if you bring Telion with them (you could also ferry him with a LSS). With the Ultramarines Chapter Doctrine, they won't mind moving in by turn two or three and should be able to line up their shots effectively and/or score some Secondary objectives.

Update: The primaris scout conversions are done

based on "Pete the wargamers" conversion on youtube, these look good to me.

My greenstuff ability is not great, so the shoulders look a bit pants painted flesh, so im going to paint them all with a black undersuit to match the trousers

Just need ideas for a cool land speeder storm conversion, i keep thinking to use a stripped down stormtalon, but that might be too big
