Ork Updates & New Models - 9th Edition Discussion

I am a bit disappointed about being forced to bring the Spanna too. This is exactly what I was worried GW was/is going to do with the Kommandos. I have not seen a data sheet for the Kommandos yet. I looked at the Tankbustas and was surprised GW didn't seem to force the extra kit on that unit, maybe they realized they still had that loose model in the kit and no Deffgun for it and were trying to make the whole kit useable but I can't recall how many Deffguns are in the kit and now I am wondering what they did to Burna boys. Are they also forced to buy a Spanna?

Really wish there was a Spanna mob to put all those extra Spannas into. I'd field that with with KMB's or Bigshootas and be a happy Warboss.

Burnas/ Lootas are 4:1 iirc.

Kommandos however are replete with options. The datasheet reflects the model options so they can take what we've seen which is awesome. The only anomaly is the sniper - no rules bar kustom shoota for him.

However, as they're max squad size 15 you could take a 15 strong mob and have some spares for kill team.

I'll also be lootin' clan kulturs too and having blue snakebites/ bad moons. The death skull rules are imo pointless now. As such extra dakka would fit - from lootin'. Alternatively they're that lucky that bullets ricochet off medals etc hence snakebites... Every other faction gets custom chapter/ kabal etc so off I go.

Spannas come with a Big Shoota as their base equipment and pay no points for it. The KMB and Rokkit launcha are both 5 point upgrades.

It's unfortunate, as it means you're basically spending 21 points a deffgun instead of 17, just getting an ablative wound and a big shoota for the privilege. With Gretchin still costing 5 points a model, and the way terrain is in 9th, I just don't think Lootas have good play, sadly.

Yeah. I actually had lots of fun moving up grots, then 'Da Jump'ing' a 15 man loota, even once they had absurd points raises, popping 2CP Dakka, Dakka, Dakka so they're still 5's, and then grot-shielding if stuff came their way. Was fun danger-close warfare.  I suppose, with them being "Dakka 3/2" now, that's still mildly viable, just, without the DDD to give them 'Still hits on a 5 despite moving' Lootas are still in a pretty "ass" place. :/

EDIT: I'm an idiot, no penalties to hit on moving, because they're Dakka weapons. Danger-close da-jump lootas are maybe a thing after all still!

Having looked over a bunch of images in imgur, I'm super excited for my deff dreads.

- 4 Klaws + Goff + Big Krumpas + Waaagh turn (why not?) = profit

On the rerollable charge, 8 attacks hitting on 2s with 6s causing extra hits, S11, 3 damage. And you can have 3 of these running around!

That's usin' your noggin'! Yeah, in that situation, you could easily get 60 shots going. They'd still fold to any kind of slap-back, but there might be something there.

Yeah, no idea why Grot shields is 2CP... I feel like, a good number of these are high CP for what they do.

Also, Ghaz can ride in a battlewagon, but he takes up 18 slots. So, uh, don't roll a 1, or I hope you brought his banner-grot or another expensive character around as wound sinks for the truck getting killed.

Why he's not 15 slots, allowing you to take some barebones tankbustas or something, is beyond me. Gunna end up in the Tellyporta as usual it seems, even though at 300, he still seems way too expensive for me.

Strat coatings are bizarre. A lot seem to be 2CP whereas say ad mech get to melt your army for half a CP.

Guess we'll see how stuff plays when we get the codex in hand.

The general ebb and flow of balance I'd say. Wouldn't be surprised if the next Errata wave changes the cost of other faction strats to align more with the costs they've come up with for Orks. Though that doesn't help Orks at the moment. Over all from what I've seen of the leaks though, I feel like Orks have generally gotten a boost, especially for my preferred method of running either lots of buggies and Bikes or lots of Dreads and Kanz.

Wow. That actually looks pretty good! Usually around £75 aren’t they?

Thanks for posting that Marshal!

85 but it's a solid box.

It's essentially black reach updated with switching nobs for the dread

Good point about black reach redux. Almost a shame they didn’t put a nobz kit and grukk in there instead as a direct homage. Surprised so many new kits in there - breaks the previous combat patrol trend.

This might be the first battle force I get for an existing army.

I've been wanting a deff dread (or two!) and wouldnt have wanted any more Nob squads so this is a solid choice for me. The deffkoptas can join my black reach ones. The mega armoured Nob is a great model and 20 more boys is always good too. I may actually have to get around to rebasing my existing Orks now though....

Right do I double down on beast snaggas only or go for a mix with this combat patrol being such a good one. Already got a beast snagga box confirmed and plan to get the rest of their stuff

In all honesty, run what you fancy. Mix it up, go pure snaggas, detachment of each? All good :)

Thank you I’m definitely focusing on snaggas might get some other bits like gretchin as I think they go with the crazy hair dude. Wish they did a squig heard

That’s what I’m thinking, or the bong bong squig dudes and just kitbash grechen onto them or their weapons, I’m undecided yet. I love beast snaggas though I can’t wait. Thanks for the help!

The squig hoppers/ bounderz are big enough to use as stormboyz. They're on 32mm bases and surprisingly chunky. I used mine as stormboy standins and they work well :)

Whatever you decide, enjoy and have fun!

Found some more codex leaks (from the actual book this time). Specialist mobs are one unit per detachment and there is no mention of advance and shoot for Dakka weapon. Just reading through them now (megaboss is only 115pts!)

Edit: Ha! The crusade rules are fun.

Might Makes Right is a perfect crusade mechanic for Orks. I absolutely love it. Now your crusade games can end with a "shoo, I have to fight myself" is both hilarious and fitting.

There's a requisition for adding models to a unit when you've beaten another Ork player, the scrap mechanic is cool, some of the relics are standouts (the better SAG and the Choppa for multiple WAAAGH!s). Crusade is a great system that is a lot of fun, especially as an alternative to Matched Play. I can't wait to dive into it.
