jaxom Posted April 25, 2021 Share Posted April 25, 2021 I'm rereading HH: Extermination and it mentions that "The Legion took from the 8th Expeditionary Fleet the emblem of the Winged Bolt as its first heraldic device," and there's a Sol Unification-era marine on p. 120 with only part of an icon shown. I always thought it was their legion symbol pre Perty. Well, if its not, its perfect for loyalist elements/ old farts in the legion in my mind anyway. Extermination p105, has reference to a numbers swell from diverted 3rd legion recruits, so I always thought the symbol being a stylized aquilla looking was the reason. I think he meant that the crosses aren’t “Templar”. The Templar cross used by the Imperial Fists is a Maltese cross. The crosses on the Iron Warriors sheet are a version of the standard cross pattée Principia Bellicosa icon for elite/veteran units, as also seen marking the Elites slot on every force organisation chart since 3rd edition. A lot of legions had other ways of denoting veterans, but I think it (or a variation of it) is on the World Eaters, Death Guard, Salamanders and Raven Guard sheets at least. But I don’t think those Aquila frames are the pre-Perturabo Winged Bolt icon the text refers to either. It is “winged”, but there’s no “bolt”, and Perturabo supposedly completely replaced their old organisation and heraldry when he was reunited with the legion. So, I don’t think it’s ever been shown. I’d suggest taking inspiration from the Dark Angels’ winged swords and the Blood Angels’ winged blood drops. White Scars iconography also includes some actual “winged bolt” icons, so maybe avoid anything too similar to those. Maybe something like the single-winged Ravenwing icon with a thunderbolt replacing the sword. Unknown Founding/progenitor, earliest records dating to at least M32, known for callous brutality, disregard of civilian casualties, and covering things in hazard stripes… The Imperium could have been full of tiny Iron Warriors garrisons that were entirely bypassed by the Heresy, after all.
