"Index ~" Name for Heretic Astartes

Recommended Posts

Back in 3rd edition when GW brought back the Index Astartes articles, those on the Chaos Space Marines, both the traitor legions and later heretics such as the Red Corsairs, were called "Index Astartes" articles.

Many hobbyists here have been calling theirs "Index Traitoris/Traitorus" articles.

The similar article about the Fallen in Issue 464 of White Dwarf Magazine is "Index Hereticus."

Do with that information what you will.

This could go one of two ways.

We get something on par with Exorcists, which really just delivers some new WLTs / Stratagems. Fallen remain a rarely used unit.

Or GW could make make other Dark Angels units available to Chaos. Chaos players rush to buy Deathwing Knights and a Cypher model.

*sigh* would prefer to just get the Codexes.

*snip*

That discussion should really take place in the Heretic Astartes forum.

This article is of particular interest from a different (i.e., non-game play) perspective.

The Index Astartes has been presented in universe as something similar to an encyclopedia, a work compiled by Imperial servants as a source of information on the Adeptus Astartes (each separate article being similar to an encyclopdia article - part of the Index Astartes). While some articles have included portions written from a more omniscient viewpoint, most of the information is presented as imperfect and possibly misunderstood information, with hundreds or thousands of years separating some facts from the authors of various articles.

With the Fallen, however, we have a subject that is supposed to be unknown to most people. While there are doubtless a few exceptions, knowledge of the Fallen is supposed to be limited to the Unforgiven Chapters and the members of the Fallen. The Imperium shouldn't have a publicly available article on the Fallen. This may be an explanation for the Index Hereticus nomenclature in place of Index Astartes - this article (the in universe lore) may be part of a secret body of work whose access is restricted, perhaps something written from the viewpoint of the Unforgiven Chapters or perhaps a select group within the Inquisition.

I get your point.

I was bemoaning the futility of these articles in general, they typically deliver some fluff along with slight tweaks that don't convince people to play them.

What would be interesting is if it's written from an in-game perspective and the authors are not aware of the relationship with the Dark Angels. Or if it's written from the perspective of the Ordo Malleus and they are in on the secret.

Doubt that's going to happen, but let's see.
