Forge World red and bone scheme official fleet name

I want to say it's a callback to the 2nd edition poster boys. From what I can find the Fleets in that were Behemoth and Kraken, but both of their modern incarnations use an element of it (Behemoth with red skin, Kraken with the inverted version of the scheme). At a push, I'd err towards Kraken since it's the same colours, just swapped around but Behemoth could easily be justified.

Its a specific Scythed Hierodule from Imperial Armour 4: The Anphelion Project. That book had multiple Tyranid schemes, none of which were associated with a specific fleet.

I'm guessing that Kraken had reversed colours in second edition?

No Hive Fleet had a colour scheme until 4th edition. Hive Fleet Kraken scheme was around in 3rd ed as the default 'eavy metal scheme but it isn't called 'Hive Fleet Kraken' anywhere in the codex and the painting section just encourages you to experiment with painting Tyranids however.

I like them! The only thing about the one on the right is it’s a little too dark all over. From a quick glance everything looks like a wash. But… I get what you’re going for - so you could add some edge highlights or maybe try dry brushing and then potentially shading in areas that accidentally get dry brushed.

I would also suggest trying your schemes on a nid model with a gun (so you can see what colors you want to use for the ranged weapon) and then once you land on one, try it on some progressively larger ones! That’s what I did and it helped me understand my scheme.

Some good suggestions thanks guys. With the dark genestealer I was set on trying out contrast paints to see how they came out.

I used Black Templar all over Wraithbone on a few other test models, and on this model Wraithbone zenithal sprayed over black to see how that came out.

I was hoping it would be an instant xenomorph but the effect is a little subtle TBH, and my version with gloss varnish didn't really work at this scale. The green one and red and bone one are painted with hasty layering and washing and traditional dry brushing.

What I liked about the black scheme was an idea to expand it into a Cults army with corrupted guardsmen, so you have the Aliens and the Colonial marines working together in one force! It may be a bit tricky to pull off the black, and being the fancy space hulk genies they may be overshadowed by their bases.

In terms of what this project is, I wanted to finish a kill team for the UK reopening in May and I chose to build 9 of my long suffering space hulk genestealers because I had them, and because my newbie player friend is doing Space Wolves and I wanted to be sporting and pick a non imperial faction.

I've never done Tyranids before so I thought it would remove some of my decision angst, but spending weeks building them has made my heart grow fonder... Though I think in terms of expansion it would be the other dozen genestealers, the Brood Lord, a patriarch and maybe the stand alone brood lord. I like Genestealers now!

I think I'm going to try red and bone again but with Mephiston Red as the base colour instead of Khorne red as I think the forge world examples are much brighter.

Black templar is really black, and I find it hard to get the contrast effect - If I was actually using it for that, I'd thin it 50/50 with contrast medium, and see what one coat looks like, following up with another coat.

I'd agree the left scheme looks better - you can probably get away with a wraithbone basecoat, blood angels red on the body, then skelton horde on the carapace for a really fast, effective scheme.

Digging a little, the Old Doom of the Eldar boxed set details the Tyranid attack on the Craftworld of Iyanden. The specific Hive Fleet wasn't specified at the time, however we now know that it was Kraken, which is what this original scheme was, which then later mutated to the mainly bone wit hred claws scheme.

Conversely, the studio also had a purple painted tyranid army around 3rd edition, which featured in a White Dwarf where ultramarines + PDF defended against the fleet. By virtue of Behemoth being the only fleet to attack Macragge, we can assume that the purple scheme was the original Behemoth one.

This all changed with the release of the 3rd ed codex, which shook up the schemes.

how do you get that weathered bone look in first pic? are those cracks and weathering part of the model?

The forge world model? I'm 99% sure their larger nid models have sculpted details on the carapace, something only feasible to that extent with resin :) It does look pretty cool though and it would make life easier if it made it to the plastic range...

Thanks for digging up all the details guys!

This is a bit embaressing, but after painting a couple more test models including red and bone I ended up channelling Henry Ford for the colour scheme:

The feedback I got was overwhelmingly to go for the red, but my heart was set on black.

More soon, and my apologies to Space Wolf collectors!
