Richard Halliwell Passes Away

Recommended Posts

Article.

Halliwell was an integral rules designer at Games Workshop in the 1980s, working alongside Rick Priestley and Bryan Ansell - amongst many things, he was responsible for the original iteration of Warhammer in 1983, Block Mania in 1987, Dark Future in 1988 and eventually co-created Space Hulk in 1989 with Dean Bass.

It's always a tragedy when someone passes on, but it's an opportunity to reflect upon what they've done with their life - and in our case - what they've contributed to the hobby.

EDIT: A digit.

it's strange they don't do obituaries

I've seen three - one in WD (Steve Hambrook), and two on the Community site (Geoff Robinson & Alan Bligh). :(

Fair points; I didn't realise they had had an obituary for Bligh and Robinson on the site, good on them. I do think they need to do more concrete work on showing the history of the company and its creatives, and obituaries (especially full ones) are ways to do that - especially as they won't be getting obituaries in the Times or Guardian, unfortunately :(

Maybe the Guardian should do an obituary. Or if someone on this forum knew him, they could write one for the 'Other Lives' section (https://www.theguardian.com/info/2015/jan/28/contact-the-guardian-obituaries-desk). I know nothing of the manner of his life or death, but if by a man's works shall ye know him, then Richard Halliwell's life was one worth celebrating and commemorating. His games have brought joy to thousands if not millions. Here is him in WD121 - the magazine I fist saw that got me into this hobby, with an article on Space Hulk, the game I first got into.

A great shame - my sympathies to his family. :sad.:

Sadly, it looks like life post-Games Workshop did not treat him well. :sad.:

Oh man, that's very sad. Poor guy.

May the Bell of Lost Souls toll for him. Without him we'd probably not be here. Rest in peace, mighty one.
