Hail brothers!

Im an old school BA player, think I stopped playing somehwere end of 5th ed begin of 6th edition. I want to pick up he hobby again and im wondering whats changed for the sons of our most glorious hawkboi!

Memes aside, aside from a few units from the new starter box almost none of my units are primaris. Id love to hear some feedback about whats good and what isent in this edition before I get facerolled by people because im bringing older units that might not have the best rules anymore :sweat:I dont mind the primaris units per se, but id love it abit more if my battle company+ isent made completly obsolete by the current rules:dry.:

My army used to be composed of a mix of mech units and assault/death company units with jump packs. Used priests for FnP bubbles when they could still do that and stuff like that. Loved the synergy and high mobility that it brought and loads of people underrestimated my DC charges, Often quikly learning to shoot the black ones first :teehee:

My 'back in my day' musings aside, looking forward to read your feedback! :happy.:

Priests are still good, with upgrade to chief Apothecary they are verging on filthy good. Old school marine heroes still have more customisation than primaris and you have more options for vehicles.

Terminators are still quite capable, attack bikes are a very competitive choice as well. Assault squads are less favoured but don't have a direct primaris replacement at the moment - they are more overshadowed by our special cc units (sang guard, death company and vanguard veterans) all of which are good to very good. Bust out a list and tweak from there really, we have lots of toys available now.

Hello brother! Join the ranks of the emperor greatest son again and strike fear in the hearth of the enemies of the golden throne.

You said you liked to play a mixed Mech force? Unfortunately tanks are atm a bit on the bad side of things. But at least your non Primaris Marines got a boost with a second wound and are still far more customizable than anything Primaris. Though assault Marines are a bit lacking as they are outshined by our more specialized close combat specialists. They just lack the punch to be reasonable.

Thanks for the replies :)

I dont have the codex on hand yet so il have to make that my priority, but whats this about upgrading Priests? :huh.: like can you turn them into sanguinary high priests or something?

I had heard that marines had gotten a 2 wounded....sometime ago but never got to play with that. That said ive also heard some weapons (most notably more stronger weapons like plasma) do more wounds as well though so I guess it evens out? Stronger against small arms fire, same weakness to anti-power armor weapons?

Shame to hear our assault marines arent the powerhouses they used to be. Ive won many games with a decent assault squad charge and when properly supported they could really hold their own. What would you guys suggest I look into for CC units?

It's not that assault marines have got worse, in fact they have got better than they were from previous editions with +1attack from chainswords, +1 to wound from chapter tactics etc but that the other units do everything the assault squads can do but better and for comparatively not much more points.

You can upgrade some characters to chapter command level by spending command points pregame (chief librarian/chief Apothecary/chapter champion/master of sanctity/master of the forge/chapter master) to give them a skill boost/extra abilities.

You pay points for it. Since our codex became a supplement for the latest marine codex you just spend some points to upgrade to chief apothecary, high chaplain and so on. They get some special abitities out of this, like a second prayer for the chaplain. You then can further upgrade them with special Warlord traits and even relics that are tied to those upgrades. The Primaris chaplain on bike is also popular right now. Fast, durable and heavy hitting with the right upgrades.

Don't know your gaming group or level of competition, but I guess you should just try to get a grip of the new rules and start with what you already have. If your first match is a 2000 points battle with every special rule and relic cramped into you list you won't have much fun I guess. Rules have changed since back then. Like a lot.

Wait the codex is back to beeing a supplement? :dry.:We just got a stand-alone codex after a few editions of codex limbo and now were back to beeing a supplement? Upgrading characters sounds pretty neat actually. You dont need a seperate entry for the upgraded versions that way, I like it.

I did play a handfull of 7th (or was it 8th?) edition games and I know some of the changes, but not all obviously. So il have to do some reading before I can start thinking about playing a game. My local game store hasent seen a game for over a year (for obvious reasons :whistling: ) so I have no clue how the game scene is currently. They are still there, but gaming in the LGS is off the picture for the foreseeable future.

I hope to have learned the rules by the time it is possible again. :) Really appreciate the feedback! HElps alot ^_^

Almost all of the previously stand alone marine codexes are now supplements - Dark Angels, Space Wolves, Deathwatch - the only exception being Grey Knights.

It's really not that bad, we get the vanilla Space Marine stuff plus our unique stuff, by and large.

On one hand I can see the upsides. If they want to change something for all marines (like an historic example....say the storm shield needs an update?) they could just change that in the main codex and wouldnt need to change it for all the codex that wield it. On the other hand, it means we need (at bare minimum) 2 books to play our army now. I hope we dont go back to needing half a dozen books just to wield our army.... I dident play much like I said earlier but I got the campaign book for the devastation of Baal book and while more options was nice (like Primaris Mephiston!) keeping track of all the faq's, erretas and changelogs was very bothersome.

And I dident even play :blush.:

Thanks @Jolemai, good to be back :happy.: im already painting Intercessors as the painting bug caught up with me :whistling: il take a look at that thread you posted, thanks!
