The flicker from green to orange of the squad vitals in the HUD alerted Brynjarr that not everybody had avoided harm at the guards hand, the display was not yet red, so for now it was not to serious, but Orphiel may have stepped out a bit too far when he unleashed his stormbolter, or the vagrancy of luck had briefly favored the guards, either way, time to change the dynamics.

Shield raised he charged in to fight alongside Radago.

Full action, Charge I know using the power axe would be more efficient, but I am envisaging Brynnjar putting his full momentum behind the shield and smashing his way into the guards, knocking some back and so on. He will use the axe next round if he is still in melee then.

"The Emperor protects!" roars the Arbitrator sergeant, a big man whose cheeks are almost as red as the helm he wears. He bravely jumps forward to protect his troopers, trying to push back against Brynjarr shield to shield and throwing a swing of his shock maul at Radago. But his shield charge bounces away ineffectually, and causes his maul to fly hopelessly wide. He has done nothing more than draw attention to himself.

Orphiel realised he was hanging a little too far out of the sturdy safety of the corner.  He tried to pull back in as the shot connected, feeling it clatter and snap along his armour, scoring rents in the plating.

Dodge: AG 53

D100: 65, Fail 1 DoF

GM: Orphiel has a weird wound setup because of his Solo.  So he's at 17/20 Real wounds and 2/6 of his "ablatives".  The temporary wounds are always removed before any wounds are applied that need treatment.

"The Emperor protects!"

The Sergeant gamely and bravely leapt into the fray, but Orphiel offered a sad smile for the prayer or war-cry on the man's lips.  Maybe it was both.  The Emperor was here today, but standing impassively, watching the slaughter of his Judges.  He knew the good to come of it of course - the Pride of Kings either destroyed or given over to the keeping of his Chapter or the Grandmaster himself.  The deaths here were in service to a higher purpose, one the Lords of Allhallow deemed utterly sacrosanct.

The price to be paid in protecting a ten-thousand years old secret was high.  It had to be.

And the Iron Gods were here because of another secret.  One that a fool Naval Officer had blabbed all over the place, and now innocent men must die.  What did the idiot think would happen?  Maybe that was the problem, and the sour thought caused him to shake his head in recrimination.  What was the old saying?  Three may keep a secret, if two of them are dead...

Orphiel didn't mean to, but his eyes flicked across to Brynjarr and Radago, and blessed, beloved irony returned.

His thumb shifted the shot-selector again, even as his finger caressed the trigger.

Even as the men around him fall to Orphiel's fusillade, the second Arbites officer throws himself into combat alongside his fellow. His swing is slightly better controlled, catching a glancing blow across the top of Brynjarr's helm.

Ears ringing, sparks dancing across his helmet, disrupting the HUD for a few seconds until the armour’s spirit reestablishes itself, Brynjarr turned towards the officer and reflexively lashed out in retaliation. Flung across the room the Arbiter grunted as he collapsed against a wall.

Attack Officer C

Brynjarr is reflectively attacking with his fits I guess, so not sure what to do after the hit roll.

With the immediate threat neutralised, Orphiel shuffled a few inches to his right.  Argo gripped in his left fist, his body was now mostly shielded by the wall, his right hand grasping and re-grasping the hilt of Zachariah's Steel, unbloodied and still in the lumenstrips above.

Even though the Breacher had taken a fair buffet, it would take a lot more to stop an Astartes.  Without the press of meat to absorb the detonations of the storm bolter pointed in the direction of his comrades, Orphiel settled for keeping a sharp eye, trusting to the others to mop up quickly.

Squad Beta:

The last of the Imperial peacekeepers falls backwards, his head striking a bulkhead. He drops bonelessly to the floor and silence reigns for a moment. But from the corridor to the left you can now hear the echoing sounds of a commotion. Voices shout and wail, something clatters and bangs, a cacophony of anger, hate, fear and even mockery. The cell block.

Lang.

You hustle around the corner to see four rows of detention cells. Many are full of screaming, hollering criminals - hive gangers, mutants and worse - pleading through steel bars for you to release them, almost hysterical at the possibility of escape.

Midway along the closest aisle, a man stands outside one of the cells, ignoring all of the occupants entirely. They seem equally unwilling to acknowledge him, not even looking in his direction. His appearance is immediately recognisable, matching the description given to you by Dex. He is old, skin tanned and leathery, and he stands, frail, hunched, leaning on a tall staff as though it is the only thing holding him up. But there is a cold glint in his slightly slanted eyes, their irises pure black like those of some predator of the deeps.

"My master wondered if the rumours of the Pride might draw out the scavenging vermin from the Solios Nebula," he utters contemptuously. "I am Interrogator Jinsho, of the Ordo Hereticus. I do not yet know if this fool speaks any truth, but I cannot allow you to take him."

Jinsho looks at each of you in turn. Black eyes stare into helmet lenses and burnished golden orbs alike. Growing, twisting your vision, burying beneath the skin into your minds and hearts. You hear his voice again, whispering, echoing, thin, but his lips are no longer moving.

You are a traitor. You are a traitor. Whatever your justifications, whatever lies you tell yourself, you are a traitor. You have turned your back on the Emperor, and those he has chosen to guide Mankind. You are a traitor. You have chosen to act selfishly, in the best interests of yourself and your brethren, rather than those of the men and women that you were sworn to protect. That you were created to protect. You are a traitor.

He seems to smile, though his lips still do not move.

You have... fallen... far. You are a traitor. You are without honour, you and all your brothers. You are a traitor. You all deserve to die. Traitors must die. Death would be a kindness, better than the existence you have chosen. Traitors must die. End your misery. Traitors must die. End each other's misery. Traitors must die. Kill each other.

Jinsho repeats these final words aloud.

"Kill each other."

Willpower Test

WP: 41 + 10 (Resistance: Psychic Powers) = 51

D100: 28, 2 DoS

The worry of having to search every cell was unfounded, for Interrogator Jinsho kindly revealed Lang’s location by his action. He had fought alongside and against agents of Grandfather’s Inquisition before and knew that to have reached the rank of interrogator that Jinsho would be highly competent one way or another.

Combat expertise might lurk beneath, but the frailty of age would counter act that. However, as the interrogator appeared to be on his own, and confident enough to confront them directly, rather than say execute Lang as soon as they started their assault, spoke of either arrogance, a trait not unheard of amongst their ranks, or mastery of another means to sufficient to be a threat to Astartes.

As the voice begun to whisper into his mind Brynjarr knew, Jinsho was a sanctioned psyker.

You are a traitor. You are a traitor. Whatever your justifications, whatever lies you tell yourself, you are a traitor. You have turned your back on the Emperor, and those he has chosen to guide Mankind.

Countering with mental prayers and training of fortitude Brynjarr attempts to counter the psykers compelling, drawing on memories of long ago, of training under the eye of the chaplain and the Librarium.

You are a traitor. You have chosen to act selfishly, in the best interests of yourself and your brethren, rather than those of the men and women that you were sworn to protect. That you were created to protect. You are a traitor.

“I serve, as ever, to protect humanity in the name of the Emperor.” He spoke with strain, barley more than a whisper.

You have... fallen... far. You are a traitor. You are without honour, you and all your brothers. You are a traitor.

“I serve with honour, even in death, to protect the people, form the Xenos, the Demon, and those that have neglected their duty to the Emperor for greed and power. The Imperium is dying, as petty lords squabble and trample over humanity.”

With effort he removed his helmet and stared down the interrogator, voice rising to a roar.

“I serve to protect the humanity where I find it. Men, women and children, cities and planets abandoned by the Imperium. No Interrogator, I sever still, wherever, whenever, by the grace of the Emperors will, and if necessity be in the company of outcast then that is what it will be. Better them then to follow the corrupt, that abuse humanity in the name of an Imperium that has fallen out of the Emperor’s light.”

Taking a step forward, right hand pointing.

“You seek traitors, inspect the spire tops, inspect the Admiralty, the Administratum, the Ecclesiarchy, all those petty lords who sever their own greed and let the people suffer.”

Still the mental onslaught continued, relentless, if less creatively.

You all deserve to die. Traitors must die. Death would be a kindness, better than the existence you have chosen. Traitors must die. End your misery. Traitors must die. End each other's misery. Traitors must die. Kill each other.

“I serve humanity.”

The hulking form that is Draak charged inexorably across the floor to the stairs where the Sisters of Battle were. Draak carried on up the steps and came to a halt at the top, twisting he stood over the remains of Sister Superior Carlina and faced the Sister of Battle stood next to her (D).

Bolter Assault:

Vesalius scowled down Trypanon's scope at the battle sister he had just fired upon, not content to leave a job half finished, but the pain-engine still walked and posed a tremendous threat. The kill-team's apothecary freed his final krak grenade from his belt and hurled it towards the sisters' walker before sprinting to take cover behind the pillar closest to the statue of the angelic saint. Though it was not his best throw, he saw the explosive bounce unexpectedly off of the flagstones to ricochet and detonate ineffectually against the underside of the Mortifier's right arm while he ran.

As the little man raised his staff, his shadow grew until it towered over all three Astartes.  The oil-black mess was cast by a light Orphiel couldn't see, his own shadow subsumed by a blackness creeping toward him that neither his autosenses or geneforged eyes could penetrate.  As the two shades merged, there was an odd sensation, a force of will stealing over his limbs, every nerve and sinew, firing the need to do...something.

He could only watch as shapes moved in that morass, faces pushing up at a barrier of glistening night.  A membrane silencing their mouths - wide in anguish.  Souls in torment battering the down the veil.  The faces were indistinct, yet the features were there.  He recognised them all of course.

Phenuel

Anraphael

Berazul

All secrets he kept, all prisoners of the silence within.

His ears were deaf to their cries.  Had to be, just to save his own sanity from their lies...the lies...the lies...the lies.

Orphiel's blue eyes moved up as though bidden, a finger snap gripping his attention.  He saw the two men with him, comrade- no.  Frie- no.  Brothers? Yes...brothers.  Fallen brothers, those he must save, those he must silence.  Three may keep a secret!  Keep a Secret - hide the Lies!

His hands were filled with weapons, and he flexed his fingers, looking at the ancient warplate, a reward for doing what he was told.  A shameful reward.  The old man spoke coldly, from far away, of shame, but he wasn't Astartes, or even human, what human could contain such darkness?  Something sparked in his mind, and he thought of his old life as a boy.  His father was a Chandler.  He could smell the tallow as he made the candles.

A light against the darkness.  An angel of Death.  A Son of the Lion.

A warrior who fought the traitor.  The Heretic.  The Mutant.

Good, honest human hatred burned, lit the spark, flooding his veins with Kill-urge, but it was not directed at the Fallen idiots to his side.  The old man snapped his head up, feeling the pressure.  His coldness sought to extinguish it, but through a rain of sweat that poured from his brow like molten lead, Orphiel slowly ground aching muscles against the liquid fire of pain.  He could see the old man now, understood his touch, that of the Witch, and he held on to the rope, pulling himself up out of the oily murk.

Well, not enough FP to fix that!

Technically Brynjarr shouldn't be successful in resisting either, but I enjoyed Tro's post so I'm going to say he did - just - manage to overcome it! However, in this Round he can only make one Half Action (plus his normal Reaction).

Orphiel has somehow resisted and may act normally, but obviously will have to wait for his turn in Initiative Order for his shooting!

S'ynek blinks, then turns slowly, implacably, to face his squadmates. His golden eyes are blankly murderous. Then he moves, serpentine sword and combat knife sliding smoothly from their sheaths.

"Kill each other." The Interrogator commanded as the psychic onslaught reached its height.

Brynjarr staggered.

Grandfather, grant me strength. He thought in prayer.

The compulsion was strong, the words had a certain truth in them. He might not have fallen but the other outcast had, hadn’t they?

“No,” the notion and compulsion attacked deep, to the core, and then… failed.

“Voidborn do not slay brothers, they fight to protect.”

The psychic onslaught lessened, Brynjarr saw more clearly once more. Brother marines where nearby, fellow Voidborn in need of help. No, not chapter brothers, others, newfound brothers, glancing to one side was Radago, and Orphiel to the left.

Down the corridor he could make out the Interrogator. Had he lost some confidence, gone pale, it was hard to tell, and Brynjarr Struggled to focus.

Grandfather, grant me strength. He repeated the mantra to himself.

Movement, focus on the here and now. Radago was turning, blades half drawn. This was not the efficient movement Brynjarr knew, this was weirdly slow, staggered. Being slightly closer to the Psyker, Radago must have caught a stronger blast from the compulsion, and had not yet beaten it.

Time to protect his Brothers, from themselves and each other.

Almost blindly Brynjarr threw himself forwards, turning his back to Orphiel and presenting his shield to the serpent sword, or where training led Brynjar to expected it to be.

Parry

WS: 45 – 20 (shield) – 10 (circumstance) = 15

D100: 14!!! (I was fully expecting this to fail, praise the dice gods)

He felt the impact, forcing him to his knees, there was power behind the blow, and it would cut through the shield if he let it. Twisting and pushing with his trusted shield. The screech, as the sword lost is purchase and scraped along, spoke of a deep scar that he would need to repair. Silence followed as the sword cleared the edge and harmlessly swung into empty air.

The clash of sword on shield, and the sudden blur of a solid lump of metal clanging in front of him distorted the swaying tableau further.  A solid connection between immobile object and unstoppable force presaged warning tones in his ears, the augurs in his MkIV helm registering the ozone disruption of a power sword.  Relays bit down on the keening screech of the weapon defied by Brynjarr's sudden defence.

The Breacher bought him time, and gratitude would have to wait.  Whilst his saviour struggled with the maniac who occupied Radago's skin, Orphiel had to take his chance, had to make the desperate sacrifice count.

He was an Angel of Death.  The bellicose spirit of his armour rejoiced: Death was the only universal truth.

With the moment given by Brynjarr, Orphiel sheathed the bared sword, letting Argo swing by the strap.  Memory defeated the lingering compulsion, sweeping his robe aside in a billowing swell, palms slapped leather, drawing his pistols and bringing them to bear as he stepped away from the flailing swordsman.

Orphiel forced speech through teeth grinding until they squeaked, even as his ragged breath spilled through the vox.

The flash was dramatic enough to be blinding despite autosenses.  Wits still addled, he would have to hope it was enough.

Gouts of flame and hails of bolter fire hurl down the hall at the Astartes. Svelk feels shrapnel bound off his armour at the same time as Draak's heavy weapon tears through the constructs leg, crippling it. Maybe not so wasteful after all then.

Odysseus hurled another krak grenade at the approaching walker to little effect. Still its pace was slower than expected, perhaps more damaged than it appeared by the earlier explosives. It would be in the kine-field soon enough however and there was scant space to reposition.

Squad Beta:

The Interrogator is simply torn apart by the hail of bolt and plasma fire. Dodging is an impossibility when every cubic inch of air seems to have been filled with explosions. Despite the stink and ozone of weapons discharge, the atmosphere suddenly feels cleaner, lighter.

Radago stumbles back, artificer blade hanging loosely from his hand. Then he straightens, takes a deep breath and looks at Brynjarr and Orphiel with those strange, emotionless orbs.

"Apologies," he grunts metallically. "And thanks."

Without saying anything else, he turns and walks to where what is left of Jinsho's smoking corpse lies on the metal floor. You follow. The dozens of prisoners have all fallen silent, utterly terrified. The second cell to the right has only one occupant. A tall man looks out through the bars. Perhaps he might once have been handsome, the image of a dashing naval Officer. Now he looks drawn, dirty and desperate.

The Traveller's Actions - Round Two, continued:

(Per Lysimachus's post in the OOC that characters may utilise the charge move after their shot)

As part of Bolter Assault, the Traveller moves 18m "right".

++BOLTER ASSAULT ENDS++

Free Action: Quick Draw Power Sword

Full Action: Charge (18m) against Battle Sister C

WS48(+10 Charge)(+10 Hatred: Ecclesiarchy)=WS68: 12 (HIT, 5DoS)

Hit Location 12 (Right Arm)

Power Sword resolves at 2D10+10, Pen 6 E against TB4 and Armour 7(1)

Hit 1: 7,6 = 23 Damage (reduced by 5 to 18)

EDIT: Errata stats for the Power Sword are 1D10+6E Pen 6; this would result in:

6+6+SB10 = 22 Damage (reduced by 5 to 17)

Squad Alpha

The heavy bolter wielding sister was already reeling from somebody else's pinpoint bolter shot, so felt felt a surge of grim satisfaction as he saw his own plunge into the fractured armour and send her to the floor in a welter of blood. He caought a blur of movement, the Traveller, bearing down on the sisters with sword raised.

It looked like the mortificator was well on the way to being disabled, and he couldn't very well leave all the sisters to that bastard.

WIth a smooth movement Svelk holsters his pistol and draws his knife. He swings his axe-rake into the statue beside him, pulls himself of the floor and feels the kick of jump-pack behind him.

Charge at Sister D.

WS 50 + 10(Charge) + 5 (Traveller's Path) = 65

d100: 50

1d10(5) + 2 = 7 damage

Pen 2
