Allied Astartes - Deathwatch, filling in the holes.

So I have been taking part in the Allied Astarted project where a bunch of us have been creating custom chapters and using those of others with our armies in various ways.

I myself have decided to go with a Deathwatch force from scratch although the paint scheme will be rather more ... chaotic.. than usual as they will each have their own chapter colours except for the left arm being the Deathwatch Silver.

Below is the force as it currently is being built, you will notice its incomplete as an army list and has few if any options picked outside of weapon choices, this is because these choices have been made thanks to the influence of the chapters created in the project and the models I had available.

The list as it currently stand.

Watch Master

Lt in Phobos armour

Fortis Kill team, 3 assault intercessors, 1 hellblaster with plasma incinerator, 1 outrider, intercessor sergeant with power fist, 4 intercessors, 1 with aux grenade, mix of bolter types (remember its for their looks more than play)

Indomitor Kill Team , Aggressor with boltstorm, aggressor with flamestorm, eradicator with melta rifle, eradicator with multimelta, inceptor with plasma, Heavy Intercessor Sergeant and 4 troopers, mix of rifles

Proteus Kill Team,  Watch sergeant with xenophase blade and storm shield, blackshield with 2 power swords, one veteran with a shotgun, one veteran with powerfist and bolter, one veteran with power sword and bolter, one veteran with frag cannon, one veteran with heavy thunder hammer, one terminator with twin lightning claws and teleport homer, one veteran biker with power axe, one vanguard veteran with jump pack and paired hand flamers.

Spectrus Kill Team, Infiltrator sergeant, 3 infiltrators, 1 helix adept, 1 eliminator with bolt sniper, 1 eliminator with las fusil, 2 incursors, 1 Reiver

Apothecary

Corvus Blackstar

I believe that currently comes to 1669 points with an aim of 2000.

Yes I know the Corvus cannot currently carry any squad, but I own one so it would be nice to be able to fit it in !

So while this obviously is nothing like optimised, what might people suggest to fill in the holes in the army as it currently stands to at least make it usable, this can include weapon options for the Corvus too as its only currently partly complete, I did like the idea of the 5 outrider Fortis kill team but pretty sure that leaves me about 20 points over anyway.

Ok I’ve looked over the list and had a think, you have made your army rule of cool which is awesome but the downside is nothing will work exactly wysiwyg, so I think personally you need to round off the squads first.

Count the fortis team with the exception of the other guys as assault Bolters so that will be a squad that can move up the field, do the same with the gravis squad and count the, as assault variant including the multi Melta otherwise your going to have an army that’s not really good at anything but costs allot and have rules more confusing than the kill team box set as everyone is a mini character in terms of their load out.

Keep the spectrus kill team for character sniping and holding your back board.

your veteran squad with bike and terminator and jump pack counts as 14 which can fit in the corvus, as they are very st Abby I would remove a Frag cannon for points (40 I think off the top of my head) and look at adding a chaplin to the corvus so you can dish out some pain.

I don’t know if you would be against this but if it’s just for looks consider adding a shield to your Phobos armour Lt, have him count as a Primaris Lt and then you can have him up field with your advancing troops squads and apothecary whilst giving a 5+ invun bubble to your guys with the relic, you can then consider maxing out the troop size in these squads.

One concern is your lack of anti armour (hope your corvus has las), but what may be worth considering, trim the eradicators from the KT, make them up to 3 and keep as multi Melta, use the strat to deep strike them and use the spare points to add more aggressors so you can punch people that come too close to your guns.

due to some trimming you should still have around 200 points to play, I would take a thunderhammer termy squad, give the above mentioned chaplin a warlord trait, something chary from the chapter traits list, give the litany for +2 to charges so you can use the strat to use litanies later in the turn (or make him a termy chap and do the same thing but drop him in)

I know this is a fun list and it can stay like that, it just needs more teeth and reliability, if this isn’t the direction your thinking please let me know, I’m happy to talk ideas.

Wait did they FAQ the Corvus and I missed it ? Thought its transport capacity was only 12 ?

The Corvus does indeed have Las.

oh and Frag cannon is only 10 points no ?

The issue with taking a third Eradicator is, at the moment, merely logistical... I dont have a spare as the body is in use for another army

The Terminators do sound fun; although that's quite a few more Deathwatch sprues to get 5 pads large enough LOL

Interesting ideas though for sure.

Just checked and the Corvus is 12 models, I’m certain it used to be 14 but I may just be remembering the good times. Lol

Frag Cannons are cheap as chips and infernus heavy Bolters are worth taking at 15 because you get to fire both with a minus 1 to hit on the heavy Bolter part, 4D6 strength 5 auto hits and 12 heavy Bolter shots, if your watch master is around you should average 9 hitting and become a real overwatch threat as well as a marine killer.

I understand the issue with the body, what I would suggest if you can if get a cheap gravis captain body off eBay, etc, they are dirt cheap for some because of coming in sets and you can use the spare weapons part from the kit to convert and just make him a fancy sergeant.

Your telling me, 6 pads across 3 upgrades but you always have the option of 3D sellers, some do very good work in terms of filling in the gaps in bits that are often needed.

3rd party sellers do, the only decent deathwatch termy pads I saw came from shapeways, which *starts* at $20 shipping to the uk .. but even then, if I want to every play this at a GW or one of their events, third party parts a total no-go now.

yep, I hear you, that’s the big pain now though tbh with gw pushing people out of gaming in stores pre COVID I think it would only be an issue at events, if you can get past the price however I’m sure one will have the exact terminator one, past that there push moulding with greenstuff.

You can also get the old ones from the old captain box set quite cheap on eBay though it doesn’t look as good, it’s the one thing I hate above everything else with DW is trying to source terminator sized shoulder pads. :p
