Watch Fortress Velheim - Characters Finished (22/05/2022)

Recommended Posts

Finished the jump chaplain and the text and blood today, just need to base him, I’ll weather the company all at the same time as some are already based.

Any name suggestions for a suitably Grim Ravenguard chaplain?

Edgar Allen? or Poe? Amontillado, as in the Casket of? :biggrin.:

I have been using a name generator to get some ideas for my marines at times, found this one for Raven Guard that could help out here.

Had a look at a few on the site these last few days, think I’ve used it before, just not sure how lore accurate they are.

got my Chaplain and vanguard vets finished, still need name plates and basing in the distant future but for now they are done, let me know what you think.

Back after a bit of a holiday hiatus, had allot on at work but now Incan get back to the good stuff.

been doing allot of theory crafting for the sake for designing the watch fortress structure and unity’s making a few key changes, keeping to 7 roughly 50 man companies known as the sword companies where as the armoury will be known as the shield company and the 8th respectively.

Allot more thought about where the new units will fit logically whilst keeping each company a legal 3 troop self contained force with a different specialisation.

Numbers on librarians, apothecaries and chaplains seem easy with just one of each variant as each company does not need their own but thinking on champions, ancients and Lieutenants I’m not so sure, also so how many justicars who be normal?

Decided to keep the bladeguard outside of the normal fortress structure and will instead convert them to act as keepers for you force.

Got a project out of the way I have been avoiding for some time, just was trying to avoid more infantry. Lol

They have turned out well, just unsure if I should number them or add a red stripe to the doors, what do you all think?

Looking forward to hearing more about your watch fortress structure! Maybe with a flow-chart/diagram?

I think the drop pods look good. If you want them to look more "deathwatch" you could add some red stripes... or you could just leave them all basic black for when you start up your Iron Hands/Raven Guard/Black Templars armies :biggrin.:

I trying, I have the graphics just not a pc atm to disassemble them and rebuild with boarders and nice bits etc so just trying to nail it down before drafting in some help.

The thought did occur that being plainer they could be used in other forces but due to not wanting to get into anything else bar Templars I’m leaning into adding a little extra, just one more thing of top of weathering. Lol

What a fantastic project - so glad I've found someone else with such dedication to a Deathwatch project. Hopefully I'll start my own plog here so we can compare ideas!

Jump on in, I love seeing other people’s ideas and discussing modelling and lore.

Nothing beats an army you really make your own.

Me and smoke frog  are always popping in on each other and helps drive each other forward, the guy is a painting machine and hard to keep up with though. Lol

The mighty Duke flatters me of course. I am a neophyte when it comes to the Deathwatch, I do love Duke's tanks they are a big inspiration for me to paint up more of my own. And the fact he has a bunch of Templars within his watch-fortresses' ranks.

It is quite enjoyable to cheer each other on in our hobby efforts!

It’s good to have like minded people to bounce ideas off and thank you for the compliment.

I really do need to paint more armour though, I find it more relaxing than infantry sized guys.

been trying to get back to the grind and get my Gravis done…

its going slowly, so slowly in fact I got distracted starting to design and slot together a new scenic base for a second corvus, emperor help me.

Would love to get more done but trying to sort a house move currently so time hasn’t been abundant.

So this is what I’ve been working on instead of doing the painting I should of been doing, lol

thinking of building a broken stairway and a collapsed rubble section to the new corvus base before I start to work out how to suspend the Corvus.

need a few more reiver heads for the bladeguard, just love templars too much not to use them.

Think I may just need a few finishing touches on the new jump librarian, so far I’ve decided he’s a black shield/night lord, I think I’m happy with how he’s turned out pre painting.

This is one of my many drawers of things I should be doing instead of adding more…

Real life getting in the way of hobby! Boo! Hiss! But what you've managed to do is looking mighty fine. That Night Lord *coughcough* Blackshield will garner a few questioning glances no doubt, but as long as he fulfils his duties to the Long Vigil all will be well.

Sadly real life is proving to still be an obstacle to my Xenos slaying activities but got a mini update today, I will be glad when the squad is done but I know it’s worth the time investment.

I have a soft spot for loyalists from traitor legions, I can’t help that an out of the way watch fortress is the best place to utilise them. ;)

Currently with the 2 blackshields and leviathan he is 1 of 4 night lords, thinking of a pair of emperors children and maybe a son of Horus as a blackshield hq.

The Watch Master is also a blackshield but never really decided on what he was, more rule of cool for his model.

Nice! I like the blackshields' daemon weapon, that's from the new Grey Knight character right?

Have fun working through that backlog!

That’s only the tip of the iceberg sadly, that and I’ve been reworking the companies to better aline for modelling and lore reasons.

Its the new Crowe model, really brings the grim dark look to the force weapon, that along with the claw really helps the sinister feel I’m going for, green stuffing all the gaps in the armour text was a damn pain.

Made a little progress on the same unit, still need the basing and battle damage but getting close to done, free handing the chapter symbols on gravis pattern armour shoulder pads is a complete pain, it’s the reason I try to keep to the models I can paint rather than freehand.

Another quick update, got the 5 heavy Intercessors done, minus basing, weather and name plates but that’s laters problem.

Made a start on the 5 aggressors, I just really hate the base coating stage for applying the main colours as it’s always 2/3 thin coats with Gw paint, I know there are better options but I can’t change paints mid project, when I redo my Templars and sisters though you better believe I’m sprinting for Vallejo and may finally get around to wet blending which I haven’t done in over 10 years and I was terrible at. Lol

anyway let me know what you think now the battle damage chipping etc has been done, also got the sergeants cape done and his banner which is for looks only.

Been considering making a gravis only company and 3 10 man heavy Intercessor and aggressor squads with a gravis cap and 2 10 man Intercessor eradicator squads come to 2040 points, I’m hoping for a few points reductions in light of the recent Xenos filth in the next chapter approved will let me trim 130 points.

seems like allot but even a 3 point reduction on aggressors now they have lost fire twice as I run 15 would net me 45 points alone so possible unless we get a buff rather than a points decrease but the hope is there unlike for my foes facing 51 Gravis armoured models and a Lieutenant with storm shield upgraded to a relic.

Been really forcing myself to start getting stuff painted again, decided to sit down for a hour to get a bit done which turned into 5…

happy with the progress, kinda wish I didn’t add so much detail as I could paint twice the amount easily but I do love my fancy bits. Lol

Another quick update, did another 3 hours today, sadly 3 hours only means I've finished the helmets and lenses (the angle on some make it look white but the red is there), the leg stripe and squad marking, armour text and the back mounted grenade launchers.

Still need to pick out the bolts, battle damage, bases, the free hand chapter symbols (Black Templars, Blood Angels, Dark Angels, Iron Hands and Space Wolves) and of course do the purity seals.

The bad news is out out of pre painted seals (I paint them in batches and apply when done as it’s hard to get the brush in to paint text after) so I need to do another batch…

Did I ever mention just how much I hate freehand? Lol

Gave them a couple quick airbrush layers and will touch up the gaps after, only ever really use it for think layer base coating and the odd bit of osl.

After a very long time I finally present Indomitus Kill Team Pertinax.

Really tried to add as much detail as possible for this squad, an unfortunate side effect of which has led me to restructure how I’m building my watch fortress in order to have an entire gravis armoured company.

That and I really like the new Gravis Captain…

Let me know what you think.

Lovely looking kill team, they came out fantastic!

As stated before they look great all wearing reiver heads, gives them a unique look in the gravis armor

Cheers man, squad took for ages to finish, they have inspired me to another 40 like them though so can’t be all bad.

Head sourcing aside…

Just a quick update, got one of my sargents done today, with any luck I’ll get the other Sargent done tomorrow and then I just have to paint the other 10 guys to round out their squads.

So the librarian is almost done, just the engine and force weapon left to airbrush (I can do it by hand but it’s 100x faster for the same result and with my backlog I need some kind of speed above snail).

Happy with how my Nightlord Blackshield Librarian has turned out, let me know what you think.
