Gaunt's Ghosts

Recommended Posts

Hi folks. Some of you may have seen my Tanith/Sabbat Crusade lists now and then in the lists subforum, also maybe not. Suffice to say I'm a huge Ghosts fan, my IG army being comprised of a few platoons of Ghosts (converted from Cadians using 3rd party heads and homemade cloaks from medical gauze) and a Pardus Leman Russ Spearhead. With the new character models just around the bend, and the rules preview up here https://www.warhammer-community.com/2021/06/08/ever-wanted-to-field-an-entire-squad-of-specialist-heroes-gaunts-ghosts-have-you-covered/ I was wondering what you folks were thinking?

I for one think the models really hit the nail on the head. The fit both the series' artwork and written descriptions, the characters chosen are really some of the heavy hitters and rules-wise while they aren't anything game-changing, they look like a really fun, fluffy unit to play that actually bring some utility and capacity. You could be happy holding them back, immune to Shooting, and take pot-shots at exposed characters with Larkin while buffing morale with Gaunt. You could also use their -1 to hit, super cover (they can get to a 2+ with Take Cover!... which is free thanks to Corbec!) and invul save to move forwards, let loose with the lascarbines and chop up some Chaos (or Xenos) scum with Gaunt's Chainsword. I'm looking forwards to seeing the full datasheet, will they have access to and/or will Corbec and Rawne be able to give orders, will Gaunt have a commissar Leadership bubble in addition to his Warlord trait?

Any thoughts?

They did a great job with the models and made their rules very lore friendly. I don't think they're very strong though, and they're pretty expensive for what they bring. Good for friendly lists, probably not for tournaments.

I'm more interested to see if GW are returning Tanith as an actual playable regiment with traits, relics, etc. They use to have models back in 3rd edition. I also wonder if Gaunt will get his iconic powersword as an option as well. He's had a model in the past that had it too.

Yeah they are definitely not competitive for high end tournaments, but they look like they can do ok in friendlier games. We'll have to see if they can really live up to their reputation and foil the enemy's plans when they least expect it! ;)

I'm still waiting to see the full rules and if they have to be deployed together or if they can break off to be platoon leaders. That's what will really tell me how to play them in my Tanith army. From what I've seen though, I love the fluff and the rules seem great. They're gonna get ran either way!

Yeah exactly man, its more a question of how at this point, they will definitely be seeing all the action. Lascarbines are interesting and could perhaps be a new option the coming Codex. It would be really cool to see a regimental doctrine, but since at the moment the only named regiments are those with a "full" range (by which I mean an Infantry Squad, officer models and heavy weapons - albeit how old those models are), we'll probably have to make do with custom traits. To be fair though, I've had good success with Disciplined Shooters/Wilderness Survivors (felt really validated when I read the Community article lol), the 18" rapid fire isn't huge but it does come in useful and I was actually impressed with how the cover bonus could help, suddenly all these Ghosts are at 4+ save... against a lot of small arms, it makes a difference. Fluff-wise, the Ghosts are always kind of left to fend for themselves, so it would narratively fit for GW to do the same.

Back to the unit itself, I feel like they'll have to deploy and activate together, all their special rules affect the unit and aren't an aura or an order... I'm just hoping Corbec and Rawne get Voice of Command that can be used on all Astra Militarum units. Since they are Officio Prefectus it could be like giving a Lord Commissar the Master of Command Warlord Trait? With all the attention the series has been getting, as well as Sabbat Crusade extras coming out, we could well see the conflict be tied in to "current" 40K, if only as a chapter/footnote in the new Codex, with ideas for regiments such as the Ghosts, the Urdeshi, Volpone and Narmenians.

Nice! Restricted funds right now so I'll order my Gaunt models next month.

I believe the book is the same one as before? Which I have and the different faction pins so I should be good on that for now

I just saw the Australian prices for them. I'm skipping them. There's no way I'm spending $110 bucks on 6 models. I'll wait and see if any discount retailers pick them up, or if they appear on eBay.
