Unit of the Week: Veteran Intercessor Squad

Welcome to part two of the Blood Angels Unit of the Week Series!

Following the release of the 9th edition Supplement, there is no better time to discuss all the units we have access to. Each week a different unit will appear, with the idea being that we discuss how best to use that model on the battlefield. Where part one will focus on the unique BA units and part two will focus on BA units that are new to this edition of the Codex, part three will discuss how to get the best use the generic units from the past that are still with us (and that many of us have in our armies still), and part four will discuss the Legends units that we still own and love. Finally, part five will be dedicated to the reinforcements from Forge World.

Note, this isn't to lament any nerfs, etc, from previous editions; the rules are as they are so try to unlock its potential for those who wish to use them all the same. Similarly, this thread is only for using the option being discussed; it matters not if you feel something is a better choice as such comments aren't constructive to the topic and shall be removed.

Without further ado, here's this week's entry:

Veteran Intercessors, Indefragable

What are you thoughts here folks? How best would you use your Veteran Intercessors?

  • To compliment a list, or to build a list around? Will the beta rules affect your list(s)?
  • Will you be running multiples? MSU or full squads? Combat Squads?
  • How are you buffing this unit? Will it babysit anything?
  • What Wargear Options do you prefer and how much does it depend on the above choices?
  • Stratagem synergy or note?

Over to you

Please note that the Death Company Intercessors and Intercessor Squad will be discussed elsewhere

Come on gents, seriously.

Frater x has a unit of Veteran Intercessors. They log on looking for ways how to use them, which is what this entire series is all about and what do they find?

  • Complaints
  • How to improve them
  • What they used to be like
  • Use something else

I moved the improvements conversation to their own thread =][= here =][=, so please carry on there

I mean time, can we stick to the matter at hand? Many thanks.

*snip*

Sorry, they're just not a unit with many merrits right now.

But yeah on topic.

  • If you have models and are playing pure primaris, they are an option to use. They DO have more attacks than normal intercessors, more than sternguard too, and that stacks up well with our rules. As noted, you could use the chainsword version as they then have a pretty great 5 attacks each and the sergeant will have 5 attacks with a thunder hammer or similar - so thats pretty good for a cheap elite choice. Although for Blood Angels specifically, you'd be better off using the same models to make death company intercessors IMO (which are also generally accepted as worse than regular death company).

Thats about the only time I think they're worth considering though:

  • pure primaris force where you simply don't want to run lots of DC intercessors instead and you want a cheaper backup unit to maybe support bladeguard or something.

  • 1 month later...

another nail in the coffin for vet intercessors is that, according to the wh40k app (which officially validates lists for use in official events), DC intercessors have slightly more flexibility in their weapon options and can take more specialist melee weapons. Now, the codex wording for them is horrible and doesn't necessarily suggest this, but so long as the app continues to be a valid way to verify legal lists for official events - it's legit at the moment.

We have elite choices that are better units to take than Veteran Intercessors.

That being said, they could still be a decent choice based on what YOU want in YOUR army due to lore, or a certain feel you want your Blood Angel army to have? Or you are doing all primaris? I had 5 extra assault intercessors left over from a kit and decided to build/make them a veteran squad. It was fun. Hey? I like painting gold [helms] and I'm curious how they will do?

With the extra attack they do have a place. When I use mine I will let you know how they do.
