Return from a Long Hunt

Welcome back to the Fang brother! Pour yourself a flagon of mjod, take a seat by the fire and let us talk of all that has passed lately.

How lately is lately?

If you have not been involved in 8th or 9th edition then the big news is that the Space Wolves are no longer the only Sons of Russ. At least one new Chapter has been founded of Primaris Marines based on the Space Wolf geneseed. The only Chapter named so far are the Wolfspear Chapter but it seems likely there are others as the initial batch of Primaris Marines were split evenly between the various loyalist genetic lineages.

Ragnar got into a nasty scrap with Ghazkull Thraka that should have been the end of him. But he crossed the Rubicon Primaris and survived so is now bigger and badder than ever. The Rubicon Primaris is an operation to upgrade an original Marine (often referred to as Firstborn) to Primaris. The operation only has about a 60% survival rate so is normally only performed on badly wounded Marines who would otherwise die or have to be interred in a Dreadnought. So far only Ragnar has been upgraded for the Wolves although other characters from other Chapters have also been upgraded.

Model-wise all our old favourites are still in play. We also have access to all the new Primaris units meaning we can overcome some of the disadvantages that used to come with our more specialsed units.

Depends on what you consider an age ;)

Around 10 years back we got wolf-riding reinforcements.

A few years back the 13th company returned from the Warp and Magnus ravaged the Fenris system.

Karhedron already summed up what happened since then.

And rules wise we need now also the Space Marine codex to play in addition to our own.

Do we only need the SM codex if we want Primaris?

No you need it for everything not space wolves specific. The supplement only has things like Grey Hunters and Blood Claws, but most non named HQs, rhinos, Razorbacks, non wulfen dreads, etc will be in the space marine codex.

The Space Wolves codes is no longer a stand-alone book. It is an addition to the Space Marines codex. We now get most units from the SM Dex with just the infantry like Tactical squads, Sternguard veterans etc missing. Edited by Karhedron

Been a bummer, albeit expected, that they no longer offer a SW Battleforce.  Seems all you can get is the Combat Patrol, all Primaris, SW box set.  I guess if they were not sold out of the start collecting SM pack you could supplement with a SW sprue pack buy as well.

GW do army boxes, usually at Christmas. The last SW one was "Fangs of Morkai" about 18 months ago. Probably sold out in most places but at least it means you can hope there will be other larger boxes in future.

The good news is that Wolves are in a better place at the moment than we have been for a while. A lot of that is down to Marines being fundamentally strong this edition but we can ride that and then sprinkle in some of our great units like Thunderwolves and specialist Dreadnoughts to make armies that are both competitive and wolfy. Also, even regular Primaris units can be wolfed up with a bit of effort. I converted my Bladeguard Veterans to look like proper sons of Russ.

Yup, heads, a few wolf tails scattered through the squad. I did some heavy intercessors with a lighter touch to show some more recently inducted Wolves and they look pretty good too. You can add a few touches without disturbing the "tacticool" look on the Mk10 armour.
