For a GW tourney, I think they need to be painted differently, or be different models, i.e cadian models for one and catachan for the other.

I think it would be fair, for a unified force that it is easy for the opponent to tell what's what, to use a vehicle detachment (only vehicle and regimental advisors) as one, and infantry as the other.

Not sure how I'd do two different infantry detachments painted the same, doesn't seem fair on the opponent to make them have to distinguish between them.

might be tricky for infantry or hordes split between two doctrine as mentioned

I've been working on a list where all my calvary are Krieg, all my Infantry are Catachan

pretty simple for both tournaments and friendlies

try splitting up the units as needed

I'm not sure a stripe on the model would be sufficient.

A different coloured base rings would be more obvious.

Also depends is this for casual or competitive. If it's the former check with your opponent if it's the latter it's gonna be a lot tougher. Especially if you're trying to distinguish infantry.

So I ll give an example of my own dudes that I find sufficient. I have most of my Cadians painted up in my actual colour scheme. Grey-blueish fatigues, black boots, metallic black armour, purple guns.

Then I have about 30 more Cadians, that are in the traditional Green/Brown paint scheme. I basically left them as they were after I got them from ebay.

This way, if I want to run Guardsmen in a second detachment I have a completely different look for the same type of model. There's no way you can look at both paint schemes and think they're the same.

Personally, that's the level of difference I would find acceptable for running different detachments. But if I have to search for the small details that set them apart that's not enough. It's enough to separate Conscripts/Guardsmen/Vets, but not entire regiments.

The alternative that I often go for is to fill my second detachment's troop slots with small barebones Scion squads. Often that'll be in a patrol or a spearhead with my armoured units.

Thank you, its really hard to find the line of acceptability in the grey here.

i dont want to paint my models differently as ive only got a limited amount, but want to be able to use the different rules (for advantage). i dont mind a small deviation, bu core colours i want to be the same, i guess worst case is i dont use different rules

I don't know, I think you could get away with painting vibrant bright colours as stripes. White, Yellow, Red, just tell your opponent White is Detachment 1 and Red is Detachment 2, etc.

You could also paint the skull aquilas the same colour as the stripe as well.
