New 40k looking to play chaos space marines

I'd suggest to buy a box of cultists and keep and eye on the new Kill Team edition that will go on sale in a month or two (Kill Team is a skirmish version of 40k, moving individual minis instead of whole units)

Between the chaos marines box and the cultists you can have a decent kill team. Is a good start without spending too much, and later you can expand it to small 40k games (I did this a few years ago).

The best starting point for a new collection will be the aptly named "Start Collecting" box. It has one HQ, two beatstick elite characters (Greater Possessed), ten Chaos Marines, two Obliterators, and a daemon engine (Venomcrawler). It's a good value in models for the money.

In terms of books, you'll want at least the Codex: Chaos Space Marines -- make sure to get the one labeled "Mark II" on the cover as that's the most up to date. The full rulebook for 9th Edition is pricey, but you can download the basic rules for free. Another option is the 2021 Tournament pack -- it comes with the basic rules and expanded mission types.

In addition to the 9th ed. rulebook and the last codex (from 8th, but still valid), you will need the new supplement "War Zone Charadon – Act II: The Book of Fire", which recaps all the new rules and option for chaos marines since 8th. edition.

Strongly disagree with this.  Do not buy War Zone Charadon it is an awful book.  Donate some money to Battlescribe and just use their rules until the new codex comes out.

I, like you, am a brand new player.   So take my advice with a big grain of sea salt.

I have bought the start collecting box.  Downloaded the free rules.  Happily painting and working the back story for my warband "Impenitent Heralds" (Word Bearers).  I am planning on buying the 9th Ed rulebook next month for my birthday.  I am not buying any other books until the 9th edition CSM codex drops.  My next purchase will either be another start collecting box and/or a box of Havocs.  Cultists are a planned for me, but I have something special planned for my cultists so they are in the cue.  Its just a floating list that is flexable in order.

Edited to correct edition error.

Welcome! I'd recommend not buying books if at all possible for now, as in all likelihood they will be replaced in the next year or so, and they don't come cheap. A Start Collecting box would be a fantastic addition to what you've already got.

Welcome to the dark side! We used to have cookies but the Nurglings ate them...

Good points have already been made particularly on box sets (and you can save further money by buying them from a reseller), but don't forget to look into what army you'd like to collect. From the established Legions and warbands, or to creating your own DIY warband there's a lot you could do :) As Loss says there will be a new C:CSM coming soon(ish) at the least so focusing on the model side is wise for the moment :tu:

If you want to dip into Daemons also you can get all the help you need here, but I'd focus on the one range of models to start with. Maybe a squad of Bloodletters to summon to try them out once you get going but all things in good time :)

Don't forget to keep us updated on your progress!

There are still some Decimation Warband battle force boxes kicking around local game stores and eBay. You get a pile of plastic for a small discount. It can be overwhelming having all those models at once when you’re just starting out, but the discount is a plus. The set comes with a Chaos Lord, Mauler/Forgefiend daemon engine, 5 Terminators, 5 Havocs and 10 Marines.

Chaos Space Marines are awesome because good guys are dumb. Welcome to the long war.

You have so much hobby waiting for you! My only advise is to come up with your own homebrew chapter. Chaos thrives on variety so pick up cool models you want to paint.

I would recommend an established legion and write in your own force with characters, history etc. Its easier to work within a set framework to make something yours without going from completely nothing. Plus the 9 legions are awesome.

Think of what paint scheme you like and looks fun to paint. There really isnt a competitive chaos army right now and my best guess is a new codex isnt going to happen any time soon. Reasons are they reprinted all the psychic awakening rules  in Charodon and I doubt they would reprint them if a new dex was in the near future. For the time being just accept that any chaos army you build is going to be under powered compared to the latest codices.

What you should be secure in having in the future and be building on. Terminators are a pretty solid choice across the board. Lightning claws are good, combi-weapons are great. It is doubtful they will hurt these when a new dex does come out.

Cultists whiile having lost a bit of their luster are still a good cheapish troops choice for sitting on an unopposed objective and doing actions. I can see them getting screwed like they did gretchin but even then, gretchin serve a purpose despite losing obsec. I would not invest heavily into them and on the bright side, you can make any gaurd squad into cultists so do an ebay rescue on a used guard infantry squad and there you go.

Chaos marines: Not going anywhere. Can be loaded up like their Imperial brothers to be shooty or for melee. Not as durable as their imperial brethren since they havent gotten the 2W upgrade yet.... after almost a year.... but they will when a dex comes out. I think they have more utility than tactical squads. I use them for objectives that are more contested and hope they survive. Some people love them, some hate them. I use at least one squad in every list I write regardless of legion.

Obliterators: Always a good choice. Expensive points wise but can put out a ton of high quality fire where you need it. Even better with Iron Warriors and their strat. Who knows what a codex will bring but they are relatively cheap points per dollar so go for it.

Raptors: Great objective takers and light fire. May be good with melta to take out a vehicle or at least help take one down. I like Warp talons with their lightning claws and multiple attacks. They work well with Night Lords and their strats. I hate painting the models. Ug I hate painting those models. I did my 10 talons and thats it. No more. Ugg they are horrible to paint. I am sticking to 3D printed raptors when I expand this option in my own army. F those official models. I doubt they will get rid of these in a new codex, they will be buffed with the extra wound. Good fast unit to get somewhere. Barebones raptors make a good action doer, and perform like their equivalents in other armies, assault squads and storm boyz. 5 man, cheap, easy to hide and maneuverable.

These are my mainstays and the ones I think least likely to change. Build from there once you figure out a legion you like the scheme of and use that legions strong points to your advantage.
