Greetings Brothers and Sisters of the B&C!

After many years of slumber in the stasis chambers at the heart of the Fortress Monastery, the runes of awakening were recently struck upon my sarcophagus and blinking eyes that are now connected to augmetic sensors I have begun to walk these hallowed halls once more, freshly clad in a Dreadnought chassis. Though things have changed while I slept, there is much in this place that is familiar and buried deep in the memory coils of the Dreadnought, artificial synapses spark in recognition that what was once home, may yet be a home again...

++ Preface ++

Though my love of the hobby is almost all embracing, I have always been more of a painter and modeller at heart and so to that end, as my first 'true' post in the Forge, I thought I would share a project that I've been working on over the last few months.

Some may have seen elements of the overall 'Return to Isstvan' project around the interwebs, started by some 30k stalwarts in the Midlands including Myles David, Pete Rees and Matt Swift in May 2020 the aim was to build a 1500pt Istvaan III themed army during lockdown and then for everyone to get together once restrictions lifted for some games of Centurion.

Although linking up for games is a bit problematic for me (I'm in the Highlands of Scotland), I got involved in things in early 2021, at Pete's invitation and jumped at the chance when Myles was looking for folks to write 'Tale of Four Gamers' style articles as they built and painted their armies.Myles has been kind enough 'blogs' on the Lil Legend Studio website, however due to waning interest in the segment, the decision has (understandably) been taken to put the blog on hiatus there. Nevertheless, as I've enjoyed the process of writing about my return to Isstvan III, I thought that one return might be a good place to discuss another return.

My plan is to share the first blog post below and then I'll look at adding the next two in the coming weeks, and then aim to add more in a similar vein as the project progresses, so if it pleases, grab a cup of recaf, glass of sacra or tankard of mjod and join me on a journey back to the planet of Isstvan III where the dream that was the Imperium of Mankind was sundered and the Age of Darkness began...

++ Part I - January 2021 ++

"I’m beginning to collect a small force of Emperor’s Children loyalists led by Saul Tarvitz and Rylanor the Unyielding. I was drawn to this project by a combination of factors, I’ve been into 30k since almost the very beginning (my Christmas present in 2012 was a copy of Betrayal, which has been very well read over the last eight years). I think I’ve attempted most of the possible armies at least once, but by the end of 2019 I was getting a bit burned out. I finished up a couple of bits for my second Legio Cybernetica army in early 2020 and then spent last year working on a series of one-off projects, mostly Necromunda Hired Guns, Hangers-On and Brutes. I used these to push my painting abilities and relax into painting again. Seeing Tarvitz previewed in early 2020 was really exciting though, as I have very fond memories of reading Betrayal and devouring the Black Library Horus Heresy novels.

Fast forward to December 2020 and we found out that Tarvitz was being released on Christmas Day! I decided there and then that I was getting him, as it would be awesome to paint up such a pivotal character in the setting. I decided that in preparation I’d paint a test model, so I raided my bits box, found a spare Tartaros terminator model, and got started. I grabbed out my copy of Betrayal as well, looking for visual inspiration but also to remind myself of the story. Before I’d even finished the test model, I was thinking about developing the idea into an army.

Generally my armies always start with ‘The Idea’. You know, the "how cool would this be?" or "I’ve always wanted to paint this!" type of thing. Sometimes it comes from spotting something another hobbyist is working on or reading a book or it’s one of those slow realisations that pop out when I’m working on something else. Regardless of the origin of ‘The Idea’, my first port of call for building any army is usually the relevant army list in the Codex, Battletome, etc,.

In this case, though, I took a bit of a different approach. I knew that I wanted the army to be led by Saul Tarvitz, but I also knew that I wanted to keep it small, focusing more on the quality of each and every miniature. Tarvitz has the 'Master of the Legion' rule though, so my next thought was which Rites of War would enable me to create a valid army (much to my frustration, lodged like a thorn in my mind is the thought that anything I paint should conceivably be useable in a game as well as looking pretty on a shelf). I considered using the Rites ‘Chosen Duty’ and ‘Orphans of Betrayal’ but in the end, I settled on ‘Pride of the Legion’. This was partly because I was really enjoying painting my test model and I wanted to incorporate a unit of Terminators into the army and partly because it meant that I could start small but still have a valid 1 HQ and 2 Troops quite easily. Pride of the Legion obviously makes Veteran Tactical Squads a Troops choice, so adding one would give me what I needed.

I also planned to include Ancient Rylanor, 'The Unyielding'; he’s got to be one of the most iconic Isstvan III loyalist characters – it felt like it would be impolite to collect a loyalist IIIrd legion force without him. With those decisions made, I started looking at what else I could include. 1000 points would be a nice starting point. Manageable, but substantial enough for a game. After delving into the depths of the web I decided that a Heavy Support Squad armed with Heavy Bolters and a Legion Armistos would be just the ticket. Not only would these give me a unit that would provide a solid base of fire, but it also made sense to me that Heavy Bolters would likely have been deployed to Isstvan III as the Warmaster and his brothers needed to maintain the illusion of a ‘normal’ deployment to conceal their treachery.

With the initial list nailed down and Tarvitz ordered on Christmas day, I set about working out how I’d organize the rest of it. I was able to source some Tartaros Terminators from a friend which were a joy to paint up. I also grabbed a box of mkIII Space Marines for the vets and devestators. I’ve started thinking about the Armistos too and I think I have a model picked out for him, but I’m keeping that under my hat for now.

While I was planning the test model I had a look at a few sources for both paint recipes and colour schemes. I knew I wanted something to represent the grandeur and uniqueness of the Emperor’s Children as they were prior to their fall, so a rich, royal purple with gold and white accent colours seemed a good choice. I could replicate this across the army but still be able to mix things up a bit so that the units had a bit of character. As an example, the Terminators all have white pauldrons while the Veteran Tactical Squad’s pauldrons have purple inlays and white and gold trim.

As you can see from the photos, I decided that I wanted a relatively ‘clean’ colour scheme, using light chipping techniques. The cleanliness of the miniatures will be counterbalanced by darker, dirtier bases, in keeping with the virus bombed landscapes of Isstvan III. At the moment I’m thinking of using some Sector Mechanicus bases for this. Partly because I have a box, but also because I think they’ll work well in conveying the scorched, charred remains of the bunkers and fortifications of the Precptors' Palace.

 As I started to plan the project, the theme and the story of it began to emerge in my mind: "what kind of units might Tarvitz have found and rallied amid the ruins of Isstvan III? To that end, I’ve kept the army to a core of infantry units, dug in to repel the traitors. Each one of these marines were marked for death alongside Tarvitz and I want to explore the 'why' of that as the army develops.

I began exploring part of that with the Veteran Tactical and Terminator Squads. The Terminators are named Krysaspædes or the "Golden Shields". The Veteran Squad is named Andarta for a Celtic goddess of Old Earth. They fight in mkIII plate which was deployed in limited fashion by the perfectionist IIIrd Legion. Perhaps they represent too much of the Legion’s past to be allowed to partake of the future? One of the other wee touches I’ve added to them is that instead of combat blades or chainswords at their belts, they’re affixed to their bolters so they can run and gun. I’ve also mixed the patterns of bolters in the unit a little too, this is partly so each model is unique, but also because some might have been taken from fallen brothers.

20210217-183937.jpg

20210120-212607.jpg20210120-212624.jpg

I’m already brainstorming for the other units in the army too, though of course, we know why Rylanor and Tarvitz were there!

The bases of the models will eventually tie into the theme as well – I want them to convey the charred remains of the imperial fortifications and underworks, though I’m still experimenting with exactly how I’ll do that. My current plan though is to settle on a scheme I like and then do the bases for the whole army together at the same time.

At the moment, I’m focussing on getting the initial 1,000pts built and painted, but I could see me adding to the force to bring it up to 1,500pts. I’ve not really thought about this too much yet though – I want to keep my eyes on the prize of getting to my first goal… I might think about a Rhino or two though, but we’ll see!

20210217-184227.jpg

Legion Terminator Squad Krysaspædes and Veteran Squad Andarta await bases and decals.

For me, the goal of this project is two-fold: at the end of it, I’d like to have a well painted army that looks great and can be used to recreate some of the pivotal battles from the very dawn of the Horus Heresy and I'm also using it to re-engage with the hobby that I have a lot of love for. Going back to Isstvan seems a great way of doing both of those things."

If you've made it this far, thanks for reading! I hope you've enjoyed a delve into the machinations of my mind and that you'll join me again soon for Part II of my Return to Isstvan.

Some lovely looking Emperor’s Children.

Emperor’s Children were my first (attempted) force for Heresy, but nothing really came of that, so I hope you have more success than I did.

Keep up the good work.

Thanks Brother Dallo!

Sorry to hear that your foray into the III Legion didn't go so well, did you go for another Legion after that?

I have found that my enthusiasm on this project waxes and wanes, but I'm trying to keep to the principle of working on what I feel like during hobby time rather than forcing it and ending up with poor results, so I've a few other projects on the go for when I'm not in an Isstvan state of mind.

Maybe you could model TWC-sized "were-templars" who's inner Templar took over in the fury of battle transforming them into a giant half man - half templar?

No, no other Legions. A lack of opponents killed the mojo and when Primaris were released, I found that it really highlighted how badly scaled Firstborn marines are, so I’m in the process of selling off all of my small marines.

I still really like 30k as a setting, so have dabbled with some Truescale attempts. Most notably a Noise Marine, which seems relevant here.

Still, it’s always nice to see people really enthusiastic about their chosen faction, so keep at it.

@BadgersinHills:thank you, there's definitely more on the way :).

@Brother Dallo:that's a shame - though I understand the lack of local players killing the mojo, I've had a silar thing with a few games myself. I totally take your point about Primaris/First Born too, Primaris are definitely scaled better both with other factions and with the rest of their range.

I've experimented with some truescaling using them (I've done some Blackshields and Endryd Haar that you can see on my Instagram if you fancy checking them out, as well as a couple of minis for the "Some Things Are Best Left Forgotten" project).

I'd love to see your Noise Marine and any others you've done!

Man I was actually thinking of you and your Sons of Orar project a few weeks back! I was up in Aviemore and it reminded me of your log on here from years back.

This is a great looking project so far, I love the muted purple and the little details such as the bayonets and different bolters.
Looking forward to part 2

Thanks for the kind words @Sagentus

@Biohazard, great to see you! Oh man I have some very, very fond memories of those Sons of Orar - I sold them in 2012 to fund my first forays into 30k, but they're one of the things I wish I still had from back then. Hope all is well with you and you had a good trip up to Aviemore.

++ Part II - March 2021 ++

As you’ll know from Part I, I’m collecting a small force of Emperor’s Children loyalists led by Saul Tarvitz and Rylanor the Unyielding. Marked for death, yet surviving the Life-eater virus and firestorm that have ravaged Isstvan III they are now resolved to die-hard, making their former brothers pay dearly for their betrayal…

At the end of January, I had painted the five Terminators of Squad Krysaspædes and had made a start on Veteran Tactical Squad Andarta. Since then I have built a five-man Heavy Support Squad Teutates (named for a Celtic deity believed to have meant ‘protector’, which seemed appropriate for a squad intended to act in a fire support role) and a Legion Armistos – more on him later!

20210219-124527.jpg

Legion Heavy Support Squad Teutates assembled and ready for priming.

Painting, as was my intention with this project, has been at a relatively slow pace, but Squad Andarta is now ready to have with decals added and their bases done, as are the first two members of Squad Teutates.

20210326-194543.jpg

Two members of Legion Heavy Support Squad Teutates. Due to the machinations of the Traitor Primarchs, few of the Loyalist forces at Isstvan III were equipped with weapons optimised for Astartes/Astartes conflict.

I’ve now already acquired most of what I need, in fact, Rylanor is the only miniature I still need to purchase to hit my initial 1000pts goal. As for the other units, Tarvitz was bought with some Christmas money while I picked up the Tartaros Terminators from my good friend Kieren (who runs Heresy. Scot, check out their new monthly live streams!) at a bargain price as a few bits were missing from the sprue. A single box of MkIII Space Marines was split to make Squads Andarta and Teutates – resin bits and the extra Heavy Bolters came from my bits box. The model used as the basis of the Legion Armistos along with the decal sheet I’ll use to finish things off came from Forge World, so overall costs for the project so far are:

Tarvitz = £30

Legion Armistos = £21

Box of mkIII Marines = £25.50

Tartaros Terminators = £26

Emperor’s Children Decal Sheet = £20

Total = £122.50

I’ve some sprues of Sector Mechanicus bases in my hobby cupboard, so those will save a few quid when I get towards the end of the project!

Having almost everything I need ‘in hand’ meant that I could keep up steady progress on the project as and when I had the opportunity and inclination. The current plan is to pick up what I need for Rylanor from Forge World in the next month or so.

I work for the Highlands and Islands economic development agency, so last year has been incredibly busy workwise and this year is shaping up along the same lines as we try to support the region through the ongoing impacts of Covid-19. It’s very rewarding work, but it can be demanding which as many folks will no doubt appreciate can affect how much energy and appetite you have for hobbies. I also have three children, two of whom come to stay every other weekend but I try to fit in a couple of evenings hobbying in every week and a few hours on weekends that my children aren’t staying.

Sometimes mood and available hobby time don’t quite sync up but if I’m not in the right frame of mind to paint, I’ll usually try and build something or maybe read something hobby-related. I’ve also started to mix some other smaller projects in at times to help alleviate burning out on just painting purple, gold, and white, a change is as good as a rest when it comes to hobby projects sometimes and it’s great to intersperse painting things to completion along this long journey.

The cool painting part of the last couple of months or so had definitely been deciding on the heraldry of each of the units. Each uses the same main colours; purple, white, and gold but I’ve changed the placement of the white and gold up so each unit is unique but still part of an overall whole.The white, in particular, has been interesting to figure out as there’s text in the colour plates section of Betrayal that indicates that the use of white enameled armour was prevalent in the IIIrd Legion prior to their reunion with Fulgrim. Along with the unit names, I’m using the white armour to call back to the early years of the Legion’s history.

The coolest modeling project since the last update has definitely been my Legion Armistos; Caderyn Ævandir. I had originally planned to make use of an old Forge World event miniature (Sergeant Hamath if I remember correctly) – I had an idea in my head that he would be a stubborn old bastard who had picked up the name ‘The Bull’ and decided to embrace it, even going to far as to craft a bull’s head to embellish his armour’s plastron, but ultimately the model didn’t quite fit with what I had envisaged.

I went back to the drawing board and started looking at other models I could use instead, ultimately settling on an idea using the Legion Praevian. I wanted to make something unique though, so after picking up the model I set about personalising it by carefully grafting the ablative armour from a plastic mkIII torso onto the existing one to ‘up armour’ it. I also painstakingly transferred a targeter eyepiece onto a mkIII helmet which is posed to look synced up to the targeter on the Proteus-II pattern Heavy Support pack. A set of plastic mkIII arms and a Heavy Bolter added the finishing touches that completed the model. The last thing to do was write his backstory, the reason he wound up on Isstvan III which you

can read below.

20210325-220034.jpg

Legion Armistos Caderyn Ævandir - Front

20210325-220100.jpg

Legion Armistos Caderyn Ævandir - Back

“Although Armistos Caderyn Ævandir’s homeworld is not recorded in any of the annals of the IIIrd Legion that remain unsuppressed, Interrogators are reasonably certain that he was not born of Terra or Chemos but rather one of the many worlds that the Emperor’s Children brought to Compliance as they rejoined the Great Crusade.

Initially serving as an Assault specialist, he was critically injured in combat with the Aeldari. Though he eventually returned to active duty the augmetic limb he now bore marked him out from his brethren and saw him relegated to the Legion’s reserves. Taking this fate in his stride, Ævandir dedicated himself to the mastery of heavier weaponry, eventually rising to the rank of Armistos within the Legion.

Pict footage recovered from XVIth and XIIth Legion visor scans confirm Ævandir survived the virus bombing and firestorm of the Choral City on Isstvan III. Last confirmed sightings of him place him within the Precentors Palace, directing and supporting the fire of Heavy Support Squad Teutates. While his ultimate fate is unknown, it is reasonable to assume that he was killed in action in the Zone Mortalis actions that followed.”

I’ve not been able to play games as yet, we’re still in lockdown in Scotland, but as restrictions are now starting to ease I’m hoping to get a few games in with these over the summer.

20210326-205947.jpg

Legion Terminator Squad Krysaspædes and Veteran Squad Andarta are joined by the first two members of Legion Heavy Support Squad Teutates.

On the painting table ‘next’ are the next two members of Heavy Support Squad Teutates. Once they’re done, that leaves the squad Sergeant to paint, then in an order yet to be determined it’s the Armistos, Tarvitz and Rylanor – I may save him for last as a wee treat! Once everyone’s ready, then I’ll get started on the decals and finally the bases. The total model count for the 1000pts list is 18 and currently 12 are ready for basing and decals so I’m about 2/3 of the way through, which is not bad progress I don’t think.

Once again, thanks for joining me on the winding road back to the Preceptors Palace on Isstvan III!

Thanks @Nomad Painting, I'm glad you like them!

++ Part III - June 2021 ++

Painting has been a little light since my last update, but Heavy Support Squad Teutates are now all finished up to the same stage as squads Krysaspædes and Andarta and ready for the mass decaling and basing to come. In the last update, I’d said that I had planned to begin working on the characters in the force next, but then I had a bit of a rethink on the latter stages of the project, so that's changed quite a bit - more on that below!

Since my last update, spending has been kept to a minimum, with around £10 being spent restocking the couple of Citadel paints I use to highlight the purple armour plates of my Emperor's Children and picking up some plastic mkIII arms and legs to supplement what I already had stashed in my bits box for one of my planned changes to the force. I was also lucky enough to obtain some Legion Flamers through a trade on Heresy Trading with the aid of a super nerdy post from Tarvitz himself asking for help from other surviving loyalists on Isstvan III.

200534998-10225813264347944-343831666373

Super-nerdy posts need super-nerdy images!

Work continues to be busy despite the world slowly beginning to emerge from lockdowns and restrictions, but over the last couple of months I’ve actually found that I’m encountering a couple of different ‘issues’ around sustaining the project. The first is the fact that it’s the summer holidays which means a bit less hobby time – though with this it’s just a case of trying to maximise the hobby time that is available as before.

The second is a bit more difficult to counter though, especially as I’m well known for being a bit of a hobby butterfly! I’m involved with a couple of pretty cool collaborative projects (The War of the False Primarch and The War for the Eye lead by the amazing Apologist and Commissar Molotov respectively) which it’s awesome to be a part of but means I’m ‘distracted’ from painting Emperor’s Children at times, but I’m also finding that I’ve a desire to work on some other projects as well. The lure of a couple has been too strong, though it was nice to take a break and paint up some Adeptus Titanicus Knights as well as a couple of the fantastic characters from Cursed City. Other projects I’ve yet to fully dive into but they’re there (I’m looking at you Aeronautica Imperialis, Adepta Sororitas and Kruleboyz and now a Kill Team as well…).

Ultimately, I suppose maintaining focus is one of the ‘curses of the hobbyist’ but I also think it’s best to work on what you feel like as forcing yourself to paint something just isn’t going to yield good results and I want to be able to look at the Emperor’s Children and feel that I’ve painted them well, so I feel that taking some time on other stuff is OK in the long run.

So, the bit I’ve been most looking forward to this time: what have I been up to since the last update other than finishing Heavy Support Squad Teutates? Well, as I mentioned above, I had a bit of a re-think on what I wanted to include in the army which was inspired by a couple of things:

Inspired by a passage in ‘Betrayal’ about the loyalist Astartes on Isstvan III being ill-equipped to fight the Traitors due to the weapons they had to fight the rebels (which I cannot seem to find now for love nor money, but I'm sure it's there!), I decided that I wanted to include another ‘rarely seen on the table top’ unit in the shape of a Tactical Support Squad equipped with Flamers. A search through my bits box yielded almost everything I needed other than legs, arms and flamers but having acquired those as described above, I set to work building Squad Latobius (named for a Celtic sky and mountain god worshipped by the people of Noricum, now modern Austria and Slovenia).

While I was assembling them, I decided to use the up-armoured helmets traditionally worn by Legion Breacher Squads, on the basis that the additional ablative plates would function almost like welders' masks and this seemed like an affectation that some Legion squads might adopt, particularly those who favoured fire. This also provided another opportunity for some kitbashing as I fashioned a plumed helm for the squad sergeant, in keeping with the other power armoured squad leaders in the army. I’m beginning to plan the heraldry of the squad now and one of the things I think I want to incorporate on the sergeant is white abdominal plating similar to the colour plate on page 111 of Betrayal.

Although I'd originally thought I'd include Ancient Rylanor, adding Squad Latobius meant I needed to drop him if I was going to keep to my goal of a 1000pt force, but this gave me the opportunity to incorporate something that I think might be even more cool into the army.

A few years ago I went on a bit of a buying spree, picking up no fewer than 8 mkIV Ironclad dreadnoughts from Forge World. 6 of them were for my “Veterans of the Howling Gyre” Imperial Fists and originally the other two were destined for a Blackshields army. Though the Blackshields never came to pass, I did convert one of the dreadnoughts to be equipped with a Volkite Culverin though, as well as kitbashing a combi-bolter from a couple of Umbra pattern bolters for him.

Often (somewhat understandably) overshadowed by Contemptor and Leviathan Dreadnoughts, I love the look of the Castraferrum pattern, particularly the mkIV Ironclad - there's something iconic about the slab sided armour plates and oversized 'helm' sensor suite so there was a double appeal here, I could incorporate a uniquely converted miniature, equipped with another ‘rarely seen on the table’ option and it also seemed to me that a more ‘common’ and 'crude' Castraferrum Dreadnought might have been earmarked for death at Isstvan III, thus 'Ancient Barastaer' was born.

I think that although he may have been mighty hero of the Legion in life, his internment in a Dreadnought sarcophagus and thus ‘failure’ to be able to progress closer to ‘perfection’ could have damned him in the eyes of Fulgrim, though ultimately this would spare him the fate of those who strayed from the ideals of the Pax Imperialis.

Still no games with the army yet unfortunately, but maybe later in the year? Restrictions are lifting in Scotland now, so it’s more a case of finding time to play but I’m keen to try and get the army on the gaming table when I have the chance, especially as I find that games help inspire me to put paint on models.

Before I paint anything else, I need to pick up some more grey primer – I use ‘Humbrol Grey Primer #1’ for a lot of projects now, as I find it easier to see what I’m doing over a grey primer than a black one, and Humbrol Grey is a nice light grey (it's maybe a little lighter than Citadel Administratum Grey) but unfortunately as my local Hobbycraft store no longer stock it, the rattlecans have to be mail ordered direct from Hornby so that’s on next month’s hobby purchase priority list. Once I'm resupplied, I think the first thing on the painting table is Squad Latobius, that way I’m still saving the characters and a Dreadnought as a reward for getting the infantry done.

So that's where I'm up to. I hope to have another update sometime soon, but in the meantime thanks for reading!

Some nice and fluffy additions to your EC. Keep at it.

I’m interested to know what your plans are for Kill Team?

Thanks Brother Dallo!

Once I get things a bit more organised, I'll pop a post up with some photos of my Kill Team along with my thoughts behind the Team :).

I have to say, I'm a big fan of this project. The format is great, strongly tempted to steal/adopt it. The models you're assembling and painting look great, too! I especially like the Castraferrum Dreadnought with the converted Volkite arm and the Armistos. :tu:

Keep up the excellent work. :)

Thanks @Dosjetka :). Please do feel free to pinch the format, I find it really helps to have a consistent underlying structure when I'm writing the updates.

Thanks for the kind words about the models too, they've been really fun to put together and I've loved slowly growing the force.
