We have a new unit of the week! Having already discussed all units in the standard codex, we're moving on to Forge World datasheets. This week it's the giant floaty gas bags, the Meiotic Spores. 

 

What are you thoughts, and how best would you use them?

  • To compliment a list, or to build a list around? Will the beta rules affect your list(s)?
  • What size unit? Will you be running multiple units?
  • What Hive Fleet Traits, Adaptative Physiologies and Stratagems do you prefer and how much does it depend on the above choices?
  • Are you buffing this unit? If so, how?
  • Uses in Matched, Narrative and Open Play

I personally can't say too much about them, I've never used or seen them used in-game, however looking at the datasheet, they actually seem pretty good - 3power is the same as 9 normal spore mines, but these have a much higher potential for spike damage, doing 3 mortals on a 4+. A unit of 6 meiotic spores would average 13 mortals for 6 power, while 9 normal spore mines would do 9 mortals. 

 

3 power level worth of spore mines gets you:

9 regular spores: 9 mortals (max 27)

3 mucolid spores: 6 mortals (max 18)

3 meiotic spores: 6.5 mortals (max 9)

 

Seems a pretty cut and dry comparison.

I always loved the models, but I've never heard anyone make much use of them for whatever reason. Maybe because they've not got the "shiny" factor of a big scary monster. I seem to recall they used to drop spore mines everywhere when they exploded, which was a seriously cool feature.
