Ruling for specific chapters ?

Recommended Posts

Good day to you, brothers !

I wanted to know if it is possible, and if yes, how, to play specific chapters of SM that are a bit off track from the main stream ones. I've recently discovered the Iron Snakes (by reading Urdesh The Snake and the Saint) and I find this chapter to be very interesting and I'd love to start collecting a second army as them.

Is it possible to find rules that can be applied to this kind of army ?

Thank you for your answers :)

The Chapter Tactics rules on pp 94-97 of Codex: Space Marines have what you're looking for. The "First Founding" Chapters all have defined rules, both basic rules in the codex and slightly expanded versions in their respective codex supplements. Only a handful of other Chapters have defined/suggested Chapter Tactics, however.

Its a successor chapter of the ultramarines... so they have to use the Ultramarine supplement. If you want to play them as close as to the lore then you should use minimum one apothecary, a mass use on combat shields (not really possible but you could play it with as many stormshilelds as possible.

As a successor chapter you can use 2 chapter tactics instead of the ultramarine tactic. It seems the Iron snakes are very close combat oriented. So one tactic should be like whirlwind of rage for example.

But the Iron snakes are a very special chapter indeed.

Absolutely. Simply select the chapter rules from the "build a chapter" list that most suit the Iron Snakes, and get painting.

For example, Iron Snakes rules can be a combination of "Hungry for Battle" and "Whirlwinds of Rage." They gain +1 to advance and charge, and Hit rolls of 6 create additional hits in combat.

The chapter would be re-enforced with Primaris, also, so you can use all the units.

Ok thanks ! I already have the 9th ed SM codex, I'll go and get the Ultra one later this year :) Still have bunch of AdMech to assemble/paint atm, but I'm getting more and more interested in the Iron Snakes, I really like their lore and their proximity to Greek mythology is a goto for me :D

I already know that I'll need to do some heavy conversions as well, so I'll take my time to think this straight + buy the stuff I need, 3d printer and such^^

Duly noted, thank you :) I'll have to get my hands on the Ultras 'dex first, I've to admit I'm planning this a tad forward, for once :P

You don't have to get or use the Ultras supplement. There are very few rules or abilities of value there, especially if you aren't intending to pay Ultras. It's outdated and underpowered. Hopefully next year will fix it with a new update.

Codex is more than enough for now.

Awesome news ! Less money spent on 'dexes means more money on minis and paints :P Edited by Claws and Effect

It's worth picking up if you're running a known successor, because you get access to their Strategems and a couple other things.

You don't NEED it to play Iron Snakes, but it's worth having.

If you want to save some money and only care about the Strategems you could pick up the Ultramarine data cards to have them on hand.

I don't really need to save money (it's my only hobby after all) so I might buy it anyway, as I'm quite interested in lore and rulings no matter what :)

Like I said, I'm only planning my actions, I don't think I'll have the time or place to start another army before several months (got a bunch of AdMech boxes sitting on my shelf, want to finish them all before going sideways on other projects :P)

I'm taking as much advices as I can as soon as possible, to be sure to make things right :) Many thanks !

Maybe just get the data cards for the Ultramarines strats? The 40k app gives you access to everything else in the supplement I believe?

Thanks, I'll probably get them ;)

There are some great things smurfs have such as relics and strats.

I'm french, so it took me a few seconds off trying to understand the relation between Ultras and smurfs xD Well done ! :D

Looks like indeed, but I'll wait until they get the 9th ed to buy all this stuff.
