What's coming out next week? That's right – the new edition of Kill Team. I'd like to make this a proper six-week event for you to create a Kill Team for The War of the False Primarch.

Here's the meat:

• Create a Kill Team for the new edition of the game, themed around the small skirmishes that took place during the Sorrowful Years. A summary of this is below, but it's detailed more thoroughly in the article linked above.

• You can build and paint your Kill team as any Partisan or Pentarchy Chapter – or one of the other forces present, such as Vigilants, Marines Mendicant, Imperial Guard (Orthodox or Partisan), Ecclesiarchy, Skitarii, Inquisition, Annulus Umbra Chapter etc. If it's present in the war, it's fair game.

• Creativity is king! While I encourage you to make your Kill Team game-legal, don't compromise your vision for it. A bit of counts-as (like the Volkites in my example Killteam through the link) is perfectly acceptable.

Post a picture of – and any lore you've written for – your finished Kill Team to:

• Here on the B&C, on this blog

• On Instagram, using the tags #KilltheFalsePrimarch #somethingsarebestleftforgotten

• The +Death of a Rubricist+ and/or +Some Things Are Best Left Forgotten+ Facebook group.

You can use existing models.

The challenge begins on the 1st September at 11:02am GMT, and ends on 11th October at 02:11pm GMT.

I'll feature any Kill Teams that are created on the + Some Things Are Best Left Forgotten + blog in a special Warzone article; and there will probably be a couple of prizes for the ones I think best fit the theme.

+++

The Sorrowful Years

In the wake of the assembly, the representatives of the Pentarchy returned to their battered Chapters. So began a three-year period later dubbed the Sorrowful Years for Sectors Morqub and Heliopolis.

With the Pentarchy Chapters turned inwards, primary defence of the region fell to the Extinction Armada and the forces of individual planets. While garrison forces of the Pentarchy continued to resist the gradual advance of the Partisans, none of the Chapters launched any major offensives. Instead, a low-grade war of small probing advances, espionage, strike and counter-strike began between small groups of Marines and special forces on both sides as they sought to undermine the other sides' efforts to rebuild.

Who wants a bit of meat on the bones of the narrative? Tuck in to today's article, which covers:
  • The Diet of Fools
  • Effects of the Edict on the Pentarchy Chapters
  • High Lords of Terra
  • Imperial politics
  • Who's fighting where?
  • Hints towards Key battles of in stage 3
...and is generally a bit of a catch-up on where the war stands as we move into stage 3 in September.

This article should give you a lot of the answers you've been after – though of course raising new ones in their place! I hope it gives you some inspiration for new characters, new models and new stories – and most of all I hope it gives you some enjoyment to read.

Thanks to all the contributors, and remember that the project is a collaborative one – if you want to write the story of (say) Warzone Pao Fung; make a model of Umbwald Oreangelo. Chancellor of the Estate Imperium; or simply showcase your Marines Saturnine Killteam, then please go ahead! I'll happily publish the results to the blog.

Mentioned two new Forge Worlds in my Imperial Knights post, here are some info about them:

Forge world Dai-Viet –

  • Colours: Green and purple, decorations, bling and symbols of office are in gold.
  • Symbol: A golden triangle with each point having a cog-“halo”. This is usually simplified to just a golden triangle.
  • Aesthetics: Southeast Asian, with elements from other tropical laying cultures, and classic forge world. Lots of biological material (as in wood, leather, and similar) instead of metal or synthetical stuff.
  • Attitude to V: Neutral/ally of convince after the orthodox forces attack on them.
  • Specialisation: Divisionis Biologis is strong on the Dai-Viet, they have deep knowledge in useful biological material (for building material, foodstuff, medicine, drugs, poisons, servitors, etc.), and often use those materials where other Forge Worlds would use metal or synthetics. The rich and connected went to Dai-Viet for exotic animals, plants, gardeners, garden-servitors,

+ Was neutral to the conflict until some of their forces were unprovoked attacked by Pentarchy forces, and they joined the Partisans because of this. It was later found out that the attackers had mistaken the forge world’s Knight House De Minh for the Knight House Gyllenkugghjul from the Partisan sworn forge world of Härjedalens.

+ Did not like fighting alongside the Wormwood Sons, since the Chapter had destroyed possibly interested biological resources on more than one world before the start of the War and continued to do that.

+ Was thinking that they survived the war but had to hand over their leaders and some of their knowledge.

+ beasts with control implants or used as the base for tracking/hunting/combat servitors are common.

+ Suggest looking at White Dwarf: July 2019 and WD: March 2019 for some ideas how to do jungle/forest themed figures

Forge world Härjedalen –

  • Colours: White as the main colour, black as secondary, and red as tertius.
  • Symbol: On white a black sledgehammer with a red core between a black tong and two adorsed hammers with black heads in and red handleds.
  • Character: [no real idea right now I admit, if anybody have a need for something specific we could have that Härjedalen has that]
  • Aesthetics: Late modern period Nordic, and classic forge world.
  • Attitude to V: Devoted.
  • Specialisation: [undecided, if anybody have a need for something specific we could have that Härjedalen has that]

+ It’s rumoured that one of the reasons that they joined Volnoscere was that he gifted them with esoteric technology and/or knowledge. It has been suggested that this gift (if it happened) was not a bribe but something done to prove to the forge world that he was the son of the Omnissiah in its aspect the Emperor.

- This means that they can have their hands on some strange stuff if needed

Those forge worlds are free for use by anybody that wants to, in any way that's needed.

Will post some of the Forge worlds forces and fief-planets later (mostly knight houses right now I admit)

Hi folks,

The Kill Team challenge seems interesting, so I’m doing some research.

One thing I think would be helpful to create (or point me to if such a thing already exists) is essentially a beginner’s guide to the main chapters who are taking part.

Something along the vein of:

Name: Crimson Fists

Colour scheme: blue with a single red fist

Chapter badge: Red fist on ring of red (ideally have a clear image example)

Quirks: Veterans have two red fists, hate Orks more than normal

Essentially a visual elevator pitch, so someone who knows nothing about what chapters participated can look at the “canon” forces and decide what looks cool to paint.

I’ve personally found that the information, while very evocative and cool, can be pretty dense if you just want to know which colour schemes you like and which Chapter symbols are a good fit for limited freehand skills.

I’m aware there are a number of Index Astartes where you can get a deeper dive once you narrow down the search, but reading potentially sixteen full articles seems a pretty high time investment, and a potential bar to people getting involved.

Does such a thing exist? If not, would it be possible to create one? I’m aware the aim for this setting is to develop your own stories and that “everything is a lie”, but keeping to the rules of “Red Fish are red and white” etc seems important to keep the integrity of the setting (or at least know that Red Fish are traditionally red, so why me painting one in green and yellow needs a fitting explanation).

Cheers.

Does such a thing exist?

To my knowledge (which means that it could be wrong): no.

would it be possible to create one?

Yes. If you want to creat it, do it. Personally, I will not do it since I have to much other things on my table. If anybody plan to do it can I ad that according to the Lexicanum did Imperial Armour Volume Two have that the unknown founding Chapters Night Reapers and War Bearers existed during M33

Also, regarding a Chapters culture or quirks is it possible that they are very different from their current ones since there is at least 5000 years between the War of the False Primarch and 40k's now

Wan‘t there a sort of pitch summary in the FB summaries? Adding the chapter colours / insignia to that might do the trick ?

Without access to the new Rule set right now, what is the rough model count on an Astartes / Mechanicum Killteam right now?

Without access to the new Rule set right now, what is the rough model count on an Astartes / Mechanicum Killteam right now?

There is a good review of the Kill Team Compendium (and the unit compositions) at https://canyourollacrit.com/2021/08/14/kill-team-compendium/

The TL:DR is that you can take:

Six Tactical Marines with one Sgt, one special weapon, one heavy weapon and three bolters

OR

Ten Scouts with Sgt (limited to gear from the boxes), up to three snipers, up to two heavy weapons and the remainder with bolter/ccw/shotgun.

(Or proxy Primaris units, which all get five models except heavy intercessors who get four).

The Kill Team challenge seems interesting, so I’m doing some research.

One thing I think would be helpful to create (or point me to if such a thing already exists) is essentially a beginner’s guide to the main chapters who are taking part.

A very good idea!

THE QUADRARGENTA

...

Thanks for that. It's definitely a good start.

Is it possible to also add a picture of the "standard" scheme for each chapter and a close up of the chapter badge?

Something akin to what you would see at the top of a 40k chapter Wiki. e.g. https://wh40k.lexicanum.com/wiki/Ultramarines

And perhaps update it to include links to the Index Astartes as they are populated?

As an aside, I've just put in an order for twenty Tortuga bodies, so hoping to make a Kill Team (will aim for one to start with and see how that goes). Leaning towards the Red Fish currently.

Cheers.

I can certainly do photos, but alas, have not the talent to do digital art in the B&C painter/studio Index Astartes style. If anyone fancies volunteering, that’d be brill!

There’s an overview with pictures of each Partisan Chapter here:

Questions:

- What do people suggest the Park Paladins' symbol should be? I was thinking of a fleur-de-lis since the paladines were French and fleur-de-lis are often a symbol of/in France, but wondered if anybody had some other suggestion (I'm not that good so nothing complcated suggested, thanks)

- Any suggestions on how to make a SM appear a bit Indish? As from a culture infulenced by the Indian peninsula.

House Dai-Viet makes an appearance alongside numerous Chapters in today's article on +Some Things Are Best Left Forgotten+.

Die-Viet is, as I have written it,not a Knight House but a forge world. The (as for now) named Die-Viet Knight House is House De Minh. I will post some more soon.

+ Suggest looking at White Dwarf: July 2019 and WD: March 2019 for some ideas how to do jungle/forest themed figures

Some of Dai-Viet's knight houses:

House De Minh [Partisan]

Colours: Black with gold details.

Coat-of-arm: A gold cog on black.

Joined the Partisans after the orthodox forces mistook them for House Gyllenkugghjul and attacked them. From the forge/jungle world of Dai-Viet, all the sicons are also trained tech-priests, with the minimal proper augments.

House Caông

Colours: Blue and grey, with green as spot colour.

Coat-of-arm: A dolphin beside a trident

Underwater and seaside combat specialists. Traditionally protect Dai-Viet’s underwater and shoreline installations. The scions are as used to water outside their knights as inside it, and have leonine faces, coppery skin and white hair.

+ Vietnamese and Danish names.

House Tawo-Nga-Talonon

Colours: Green and brown.

Coat-of-arm: A tree flanked by a spear on each side.

Skilled foresters and hunters, who are disturbingly stealthy for something such large and heavy as an Imperial Knight. The family members all colour their hair green and often decorate their Knight suits with bones, fangs, and/or similar from worthy prey or foes.

House Nagavara

Colours: Red and green, with gold details.

Coat-of-arm: A green tree-headed snake.

Traditionally patrols and protect Dai-Viet’s rivers, aqueducts, canals, underground waterways, water towers and water-purification plants. Wile unused to fighting in opened terrain, are they masters of riverside and tunnel combat.

+ Thai and Indian names.

Questor Mechanicus Houses sworn to Dai-Viet

House Glosbe

Colours: Blue and okra.

Coat-of-arm: A blue dragon on okra.

Their homeworld, Berber, is mostly desert, dry steppes, searing badlands, and rocky coasts toward salty seas. The scions show their superiority by each having their own court of bards, artists, sages, artisans, assassins, psykers, advisors, abhumans, and similar. Have many electro based weapons. When they go to war do Dai-Viet's electro-priests often walk beside them.

+ names are Mongolian and Tunisian.

+ ancient enemies to House Ténéré, with which they share a homeworld, but since they both after they both become bound to Dai-Viet their rivalry have taken the form of a shadow war and attempts to sabotage each other.

House Ténéré

Colours: Bright yellow as the main colour, white and red as the spot colours.

Coat-of-arm: A yellow sun on white.

Their homeworld, Berber, is mostly desert, dry steppes, searing badlands, and rocky coasts toward salty seas. Their Knights walk beside the animals that feed them and their serfs, as herders and protectors from Berber’s mega-wildlife. Guerrilla fighters that are surprisingly stealthy in their chosen enviorment. While only male members of the family may pilot Knights (with some exceptions) do they shy away from interacting with outsiders, only speak to outsiders through their Knights voxcasters or through female family members, making most interaction others have with the house happen through its women.

+ names are Mongolian, North Chinese and Tuareg

+ ancient enemies to House Glosbe, with which they share a homeworld, but since they both after they both become bound to Dai-Viet their rivalry have taken the form of a shadow war and attempts to sabotage each other.

During the nadir of the Battle of a Thousand Blades, Autek Mor - the Maimed, the Vaunted Red Talon, the Breaker of Worlds - had been presumed slain at the hand of Master Argo.

Two years would pass and the Red Talons would find themselves in the orbit of Icathus, ready to break the world much like how they had broken Bodt millennia ago.

What terror then, would run through partisan veins like ice when they beheld the first to make planetfall upon Icathus.

Autek Mor had lived.

Legionary line squad Karampal.

Squad Karampal was one of the newly formed Line squads deployed by the Inheritors third company during the

Pao Fung campaign, where they fought with great bravery and skill in defense of the civilian population.

Based on the legionary tactical squad formation of the Principia Belicosa, these squads were intended to serve as the new line infantry units in the future Inheritors legion, supported by other more specialized formations. Jarnail Solarion had began the restructuring of chapter early during the war to more easily facilitate the chapters transition into a legion of old, spurred into action by both the inspiring returned son and the massive increase in recruits and war material gifted to the Inheritors by the Silver stars.

Addendum: Note the maroon stripe on the right shoulder pad, a sign of allegiance to the silver stars, as well as gratitude for saving the chapter.

Also note the archaic, occult symbols present somewhere on the armour of all brothers of Squad Karampal. Whilst it is unclear, at the present moment what the sigil represents, Acolyte Haas found evidence suggesting that the symbol is of Old earth origin, and is an ancient Alkemycal symbol for the poisonous metal Arsenic, which is believed to represent the idea or concept of transformation.

++ Alas, my brother knew not how far he had fallen into madness. True, we were all held under It's sway, yet not all of us came to realise how misguided we were. I think of all the times we had fought beside one another. How many we put to the sword. We came from the same hab-ship, you know? I forged this blade along side him in the armorium forges. He was my brother in flesh, blood, and spirit.

I feel the resonance of the act in my bones. I feel his death knell vibrating in my soul, I know that his soul is in torment, the mysteries of the Emperor's Will show it to me.

Yet after all the nostalgic glamor has faded from my minds eye I see it clearly again, the danger of the path he chose to walk. I killed my brother. I took his head from his shoulders, and I can't say it was entirely honorable.

May the Emperor forgive me but I'd do it again. A thousand times. As many times as it took to erase the falsehood of the Abomination and our the shame of our part in it. ++

Harrower Morholt of Dread-Squad Barghest is ready for combat and seems to have already claimed the head of at least one Flesh Eater Space Marine. An extra element of the psychological warfare the Star Wardens prefer to engage in; Morholt daubs his already dark eyes with black pigment to enhance the effect of the black sclera and pupiless eyes the Wardens present. This prevents his enemies from following his eye line, giving him an microseconds edge in melee combat. It is the literal difference between life or death during Astartes on Astartes combat.

Planetary biosphere records
Any insight into details you have spotted about systems and planets will help to flesh this out. If you can give any insight in the comments into the status of a world – whether it's a hiveworld; desert; forested etc. – it'd be very much appreciated!
Perhaps you're working on a story that details a planet – post the bare details below and I'll record them. Equally, if you have spotted an off-hand comment somwhere stating that Sanctram (for example) is a civilised world, that'd also be very useful.
Also very useful would be suggestions for where worlds have a mention but don't appear on the Key Systems map. Feretory, for example, is an important planet, but is only mentioned as 'near to Avarice'.

SECTOR MORQUB
Spinwards key systems
  • Kadath – Forgeworld; monolithic hive-forges; clear air; basalt plains. Battleground: Carcharadons and Charnel Guard vs Inheritors, Firebreak and Wormwood Sons.
  • Chernobog – Deathworld; atomic-wasteland. Homeworld of the Wormwood Sons
  • Frith – Deathworld; heat desert. Homeworld of the Firebreak. [destroyed in Stage II]
  • Hong Qi – Agriworld; temperate climate.
  • Choreopsis
Callais subsector key systems
  • Phraenos

  • Stolic – Deathworld; sub-zero desert. Inheritors homeworld
  • Molotov
Oblitus subsector key systems
  • Ishim – Civilised Agriworld, rich, verdant. Red Fish homeworld. Capital of the Delphurnean League. Battleground: Red Fish and Silver Stars vs Charnel Guard, Flesh Eaters, Death Eagles (I) [stage I]; Battleground: Red Fish vs Red Talons, Flesh Eaters, Death Eagles (I) [stage IV]
  • Acylus – Spinwards limit of Delphurnean League. Battleground: Death Eagles II vs Void Barons, Riven Lords, Jade Talons
  • Avarice – Forgeworld
  • Feretory (Not on map – 'near to Avarice') – Civilised; Shrineworld. Numerous built-up areas; hives. Battleground: Silver Stars vs Flesh Eaters; Charnel Guard, Death Eagles (II) [stage II]
  • Qorabbas – Battleground: Firebreak vs Flesh Eaters [stage II]

  • Strabo's Star – Multiple worlds in system. Planet Null is an airless grey rock, where the Machinedeath is fought: Battleground: Silver Stars, Inheritors, Argent Blades, Riven Lords

SECTOR HELIOPOLIS
Cambyses subsector systems
  • Gurro – Hiveworld(?) Flesh Eaters fight here [stage I]
  • Sanctram
  • Qos Terminal
  • Icathus
  • Cambyses Primary
  • Bastion
Abraxas subsector systems
  • Croesus
  • Hever
  • Jio – Battleground: Caldrassian Guard Regiments fight Benedictors
  • Morgant – Cardinal world; hiveworld. Population decimated by Flesh Eaters, Charnel Guard, Carcharadons [stage I]
  • Teo Sentimental – Civilised world; diverse climate; numerous city-size urban zones. Battleground: Silver Stars, Red Fish first company and Void Barons fight Death Eagles (II) and Red Talons [stage II]
  • Donias
  • Artex
  • Lark's Opus
Moreau subsector systems
  • Neo Jove – Forgeworld; heavily urbanised; hiveworld. Battleground: Red Talons and Flesh Eaters versus Star Wardens. [stage II]
  • Cmit Black
  • Lucan – Deathworld; Iceworld. Former homeworld of Spacewolves – [destroyed prior to Stage I]
  • Moreaumunda
  • Dardanus
  • Bastard's Teeth
  • Heliopolian – Forgeworld
Myrean League systems
  • Myrea – Battleground: Star Wardens and Wormwood Sons vs Red Talons 5th, 9th and 18th Companies [stage II]
  • Lemmas

While of course contradiction and mistakes are an intentional part of the theme, it'd be nice to have some common ground to jump off from. I hope this list will be useful for anyone writing collaborative Warzones – giving some commonalities to make things easier and more accessible for everyone.

Ha, ta! Yes, it can be rather overwhelming, can't it? I'm collating the thing, and if it weren't for the patience and kind efforts of contributors like Gamiel, there's no way I'd be able to keep track of it.

Part of the reason for the project being broken into five distinct parts was to ensure that there were periodic summaries and updates, to give people a route in.

The Kill Team invitational/challenge/event  – which you can read about here – is another way in; encouraging you to build a paint a handful of marines. Simple and sweet!

I really hope I’m not stepping on anyone’s toes with this, but I’ve been working on some models for the Death Eagles (II) to make up a kill team and I’ve come up with a bit of fluff:

[feedback very welcome, happy to alter if I’m cutting across something someone else has done]

My lordship Leona-Casser,
Forgive this humble functionary this impertinence but it seems that your candid explanation to the Death Eagles has had unforeseen consequences.

While at the time I also saw no other way to avoid open war between the re-emergent original chapter and their forces, the discovery that they wear the funeral colours of a chapter thought destroyed drove an already morbid chapter, prone to martyrdom actions, deeper into darkness. The idea they are an abomination that should never of been, a cursed founding, has driven deep into their psyche.

This obsession could of course have been turned to our ends, but unfortunately rumours of their vulnerability reached the ears of that dangerous branch of the Ecclesiarchy, the Intersuae. Intersuae missionaries have taken that morbidity and twisted it into religious mania. They are now little more than pawns for the commands of the Intersuae, convinced that redemption can only come through martyrdom at the word of the emperor as conveyed through the Ecclesiarchy.

This is a dangerous development. Subverting the military force of a chapter, particularly following the edict of the Diet of Fools. Rumours have reached my ears that certain agents of the Insersuae may have had a hand in engineering the death of Chapter Master Broso, calculating that the loss of an esteemed leader would push the chapter further into despair. Certainly the surprise election of Titanus has all the hallmarks of their work.

I believe that Arch-Dinvinatus Melilias is travelling to meet and then ‘minister to’ the Death Eagles senior captains. This must be prevented at all costs. The Ecclesiarchy being able to command and deploy its own force of space marines would be to risk an unthinkable conflict.

My Lord, all data retrieved from site Kappa-12 has been reduced to this code gibberish. Nothing can be extracted from the code banks nor data vaults, with this hex-code resulting in the deaths of three datum-magi and the destruction of twelve Hydra-grade info-cogitators.
All site personnel have vanished, with no signs of a struggle or disease in the facilities. The only clue the Stormtroopers located was the phrase "Nihil Circulus" daubed on several data vaults in ash...'
-Astropathic communique addressed to Inquisitor Enoch during the early stages of the Years of Sorrow. This Vermilion communique seems to be referring to one of several Orthodoxy Black sites located in Sector Heliopolis.

A member of the 'Nihil Circulus' Kadathian Kill-Clade. this unit of Black-ops Skitarii was never officially recognised by the recalcitrant Forge World, with all information shrouded in rumour and third hand gossip.
They became a bit of a Boogeyman amongst Orthodoxy forces during the Years of Sorrow, including rumours of 'cloaks of data most foule, thus the eyes of the machyne do turn blinde' and 'the machine-cant most terryble, that killeth thy men who gaze upon it'.

None of this has ever been confirmed, and Kadath continues to deny the existence of such a unit.

That's just what a liar would say.

Index Apocrypha: Marines Mendicant

A long time coming, details – some of which might even be true – of the organisation known as the Marines Mendicant are up on the blog today. The article also includes some key information on the SIlver Stars themselves. Whether you believe it is, of course, a matter for you to decide... 1f642.png

Hope you enjoy; it was a lot of fun to write. Thanks to the image contributors: Lars Jørgen Dahl; @battle_brother_jimmy; Louise Swinson-Davis and @natedungeon

Marines Mendicant turn up all over the place, so if you've got (or fancy painting) one, let me know.

Dain Mir Eldar - test models for the Guardians and Rangers. Conveniently, Kill Team model counts means that this is a good chunk of the project done!

from this Fb post:

'The crowd howls in zealous adoration, as The Most Holy Grand Tetrach Amodeus Grandt, smiter of Heretics, Cardinal Militarum of Hazeroth, Witch-Burner Class Seven, whips them into a frenzy. Howling detestations towards the Partisans and the Abominable Primarch.

+Picter zooms in on the Tetrarch who is practically foaming at the mouth, gripping his scorched iron pulpit. The nails hammered into its surface inflicting numerous small cuts on his hands+

+He is surrounded by numerous robed and ostentatious members of the clergy. Picter focuses on one clad in deep blue robes, their visage shrouded and bearing a single censer+

"Let He on Terra strike down those who would follow the path of the False So.."

+The figure in the blue robes bursts into action, robes shredding, revealing a hideous mantis like cyborg. Before the crowd can properly react the cyborg has leapt onto Amodeus' back and preceded to tear out his throat with power mandibles+

+Remaining Picter feed is reduced to snatches of panicked screams, shots of a blood drenched pulpit, and of pilgrims fleeing in panic+
-Analysis of the Martyrdom of Grand Tetrach Amodeus, on the Penitentiary Plains of New Gehenna. This occured during the opening of the Years of Sorrow, and is thought to have stymied Ecclesiarchy efforts in this subsector, by triggering a brutal Succession War.

A so called Yi-Go Murder-Cyborg, commonly associated with the Kadath Kill-Clades, particularly the sect known as 'Nihil Circulus'. This Yi-Go is pictured in a Mantid configuration, possessing four power blades and a lethal set of power mandibles.
(Ruststalker for my Kadath kill team).
