Wolfspear - Lore and General Discussion

Hello all,

With the upcoming release of White Dwarf 468, we will be getting a more in depth look at the Wolfspear chapter, as well as iconography, a chapter symbol and their organization. I wanted to take the time to add a more in-depth discussion about them as our first successor (barring the Wolf Brothers), as well as make available any resources about them.

Right now, we have the introduction page of the white dwarf index:

As well as the transfer sheet:

From this, we can already see and conclude that the Wolfspear are organized into what looks like eight Jarldoms, which must be their breakdown as compared to Great Companies or Companies in a normal chapter. There are some shared iconography with the Space Wolves chapter, but some other differences, where it looks like battleline, close support and fire support units have a squad marking of some kind instead of the painted geometric symbols of the Space Wolves.

We should be getting more information as the magazine gets closer to release, although it will be late here in the US.

In the shown White Dwarf pages on the bottom right box of the second page, we can also see a subtle mention of another Successor chapter, the Icefangs, but that is a saga for another time I think.

The rules section include 3 stratagems, perhaps also 3 WLTs and 3 relics.

I was surprised there was no mention of either but could easily be none or one of each

Has anyone got any other indices for comparison?

*Exorcists and Silver Spears sic got 3 of each*

Really nice transfer sheet, im pretty impressed.

It is, I'm liking it a lot. I just noticed as well that it has pack runes, do they combine the rune with the squad marking, then paint their Jarl's symbol on the kneepad?

It's kind of an interesting take for SW, although somewhat similar to how Dark Angels or Lamenters work.

It’s great to have the Index Astartes on the Wolfspear, but I think the decal sheet should have been an order on-demand/made to order kind of thing that you could get from the website and then wait to have shipped to you at a later time.  Like the Lorekeepers (or whatever the White Dwarf staff project was called), it seems frustrating to only produce this sheet and include it in White Dwarf.  I get it, freebie and all that, but it still seems like something that could be kept around digitally for a made to order thing.

I'm wondering if they get better WL and relics than we do. Not a fan of any of our WL traits and Armor of Russ is the only decent relic we got.

I'm not expecting much from their relics or warlord traits. We just have so many options when you include the space marine ones that it takes a lot for a new choice to be impressive. I also think we've gotten used to Armor of Russ, and downplay it. If I could take it in Thousand Sons, White Scars, Sisters of Battle, or Craftworld Eldar... I would. That list is based on the armies I have, I know a lot more of them with would be really happy with it. I will be pleasantly surprised if I'm wrong but in general the vast majority of relics stink.

I'm hoping for a stratagem or two that makes them feel unique. Kinda like how the Emperors Spear gained a CC stratagem making them an interesting twist on Ultras.

The article name drops another Space Wolves successor, the psychically inclined Icefangs chapter.

I'm hoping the article drops a couple more hints for more successors. The biggest disappointment I have with the supplement was that they didn't focus on the successors more.  I wasn't alone in that criticism either.

Aye! When all of the other chapters had a few new Primaris successors, felt strange to just have the Wolfspear mentioned!

I don't want to know anything about that one successor who eschews all traditions of Fenris, that's for sure. I hope they have all sorts of discipline problems from pretending to be Ultramarines.

Then you  dont want successors , you just want slightly different space wolves.

These Successor chapters are not going to draw from Fenris , they are going to be pulling from people with their own cultures.

Look at say the difference between the Emperor's Spears and the Ultramarines

The Emperors Spears are actually really dope and are heavily influenced by the culture they draw from , not the ultramarines culture.

If you want Space Wolves but from somewhere else  thats cool , but thats not really how successor chapters work , it doesn't make for interesting stories at all.

I want to see what big losers they are. I want Space Wolves Lamenters.

They don't have to be losers though lol. I mean them rejecting the teachings of a chapter they've never met honestly feels like a space wolf thing to do, and denouncing every reminder of Fenris doesn't mean they have to follow the codex. They could be out there doing their own thing. Just imagine a primaris chapter based a water world, that name themselves the space orcas and have pods instead of squads or "packs". They would assign marines to these pods based on their aptitudes and how they faced the trials not through a progression system. To join the elite squads they'd have to do trial by combat for the position ensuring the strongest marines have the best equipment.

That said IMO space wolves and Lamenters have a lot in common.

1) they both have reputations that lead to people not wanting to work with them.

2) both will go all out to save regular people.

3) they have their own honor systems. For example Slaughterhouse III, after that battle probably Wolves, and Salamanders would be the only other chapters that wouldn't have taken the Iron Halo from Calgar.

4) super self reliant.
