Saga of the Goethi Slayers (response to GK and Tsons meta)

Here is a first draft response to the current meta of Grey Knights and Thousand Sons

 

 

Fluff

 

The Sons of Russ are notorious across all of the Imperium for their deeds on Prospero

 

When Cawl was tasked with his gene seed project he wanted to see how close he could get to recreating the legends

 

 

A space wolf successor chapter known as the Goethi Slayers was born as the result of his efforts

 

Fenrisians already harbor a distrust and hatred for psykers or "goethi" in their native tongue.  It was a simple matter to find the most extreme subjects among his stock and place them together.

 

The successor chapter was also given additional support by the Officio Assassinorum and is usually tasked with slaying high priority targets.

 

In return for these resources the Chapter swore a simple oath

When the Officio Assassinorum identifies a target worthy of our efforts we will help them to track and eliminate it

 

 

 

You will find no psykers in this chapter.  Their hatred of psykers rivals that of the Black Templars.

What you will find instead are an endless supply of berserker warriors who tap into their rage in combat.

On rare occasions a berserker will become lost to his rage and become a wulfen

This does not bother the Goethi Slayers...a berserker who has become a wulfen can kill psykers even better than before

Ok let me break down the theory behind the working parts

Specific anti psyker tools

GK and Tsons have all kinds of teleport and relocation tricks.  Turn all that off with 2 units of infiltrators and their 12" bubble of NO

The specific psyker counter requires 2 CP pre game to swap the callidus to a culexus

The psyker and the chaplain combine to form a -3 cast bubble with an 18" radius (huuuuuge if I can push midboard)

Any failed casts then have a 4+ chance of inflicting d3 mortal wounds

 

I am hoping this basically turns off their psychic phase and even prevents the GK purify secondary from working

 

If a character ends up clinging to life with 2 wounds I have 3 snipers to try and finish the job

 

Melee tools

3 WG 

1 wulfen

 

Reroll all hits for double exploding 6s and reroll wounds for reliable buckets of dice.

They have been battle tested in other sagas and work great.

 

The goal behind this melee build is slowly trading over the course of the game

Chapter master slaps a unit for reroll all hits and sends them off as a kamikaze unit

I expect the kamikaze to annihilate a target midfield to deny scoring from an objective and then die in return

Repeat 2-3 turns

 

Shooting tools

Here is a major change from my prior lists

I have been brainstorming alternative shooting units...LF and MM are inefficient against MSU squads

Plasma inceptors work but felt too expensive at 240 

My usual shooting also struggled with transport spam like DE

 

Time to experiment with suppressors!!!

9 S7 shots per unit...good for infantry or transports or even dreadnoughts

Trading AP and high damage for volume

I can make up the BS 4 shooting with CM reroll all

I can make up the low S with catechism of fire

As a bonus I can basically turn off all infantry based overwatch with this many shots

And finally...these units have 48" range

I have seen good players stay outside the range limitations of my LFs (24") and inceptors (18") and use it to their advantage.  I hope to do the same

 

 

When I need a little more pop I have 6 las fusils to add to the shooting phase

The fire and fade hopefully keeps me alive all game by not exposing me to return fire

 

Recap

27 S7 AP1 D2 shots

Decent volume into transports or for MSU killing

I will struggle into T8 like knights...but I should have enough tools to kill all their support units and then play around the big unit instead

 

Finally I have added a whirlwind

Without a rune priest I no longer have murderous hurricane...the whirlwind brings it back at the cost of CP

As an alternative I can rain shots on units hidden on an objective all game to try and remove them

Finally...when playing GK or TSons I can put the whirlwind in front to eat bolters and the occasional spell that gets through the anti psyker bubble

1 turn is all I need to push the melee units closer

 

Character tools

The chapter master is a support hero

He hopefully generates CP with master of the codex

He also buffs a unit with reroll all hits before they go into danger

Finally he has the armor of russ in case somebody tries to rush into my lines...with all the WG nearby he can deter many threats

Late game he will join the final push forward

I like the damage output of the frost claw build but the overall game style in this list is play the trading game and win on points

 

Chaplain is another support hero

He can buff the shooting units early game

With OBSEC he can turbo 20" and deny or steal points late game when my opponent has run out of units to respond

He also has the anti psyker relic in case I get one of those matchups

 

Assassin

Default is the callidus.  I have a slow defensive army so the hope is I stop early rush tactics by costing them more CP

I hope for a low roll when deep striking to drop in close and steal a vulnerable objective...whirlwind can help with this too

Against psykers I swap to the culexus

 

General utility

This list also provides a ton of reserve flexibility

If I need my melee to avoid enemy artillery I can put all 3 WG and the wulfen into reserve for 1 CP 

I then bring them near the chaplain with an auto canticle of hate and 20" turboboost and hope I roll 7s with wulfen reroll nearby to shove them immediately into combat

 

I can do the same thing with my suppressors if I want to pick off backfield units...I put them in reserve for free and wait for the whirlwind and callidus to clear some space

Maybe just straightly start with Culexus in your list, would cause less activations of the 2cp switch, and save you more cp on average. Culexus could also be an fight last trick, or tank some heavy hits.

No Hounds of Morkai?

 

They don't fit my army and I have no elite slots to spare.

 

I need to field test all of this but I think a character like the culexis might be easier to keep alive in the psyker games as well.

 

It has the character protection rule and a 4++

The callidus has 2 things I want to test

 

1-Hitting a weakly defended rear and grabbing an objective

 

My army is a midfield fighting force.  I won't be going after their rear objectives unless I plow through their army first.

The whirlwind and the callidus give me the potential to steal a rear point away

 

The whirlwind can hopefully pop a hole in the weak screening units and then the variable DS distance of the callidus can help me when I drop in on turn 3

 

I vividly remember it being done against me before where I thought I had everything screened out and an enemy callidus landed directly on my objective and flipped the game

 

2-Late game melee

I can activate the callidus special for 2 CP late game and have some game breaking potential

When I finally make my push with my forces from behind the walls I don't want my opponent countering me

Even if my opponent saves 2 CP to interrupt or do something special there is a 50% chance the reign of confusion counters it (4+ to require additional CP or they fail and CP spent is wasted)

 

The culexus is too specific to psykers to be my base assassin selection

 

 

This list is about trading and playing for the late game scoring

I want the chapter master gaining as much CP as possible

I want assault doctrine without having to spend CP

I then want my chaplain alive to turbo boost with OBSEC to steal things

 

late game flipping of the score is going to be huge...if the callidus is still alive then my odds increase

A Unit of 5x hounds costs 110 pts for outflank, ignore “look out sir” with +1 to hit and damage vs psykers, psykers take -1 to cast within 18”, and get a 4++ from psychic phase mortal wounds. That sound fairly nice for what you are looking for.

nope...how do I get them where I want?

 

I don't use transports

 

they are too slow to move forward somewhere useful without getting shot. GK and TS have good shooting and will easily kill them off.

 

Outflank puts them on a board edge instead of midfield. That basically makes half their anti psyker bubble useless

 

The assassin can run behind a vehicle and get character protection or deep strike in. Both of those give me the ability to shove my anti psyker bubble down the middle

Pregame & Deployment


First time using the new list and I run against a hard counter...tons of T7 dreads that I no longer have strong anti tank for. I don't expect this to be pretty

Chapter master fails to generate a CP


I do a ROD action with infiltrators right side


I start my new saga by making lots of mistakes forgetting to move/fire eliminators in proper order

I fire the front eliminators who are unable to fall back b/c rear guys are blocking them


Opponent is very kind and lets me fix it


Other eliminators have lost their hiding spot b/c I stupidly moved incursors up and filled their fall back spot behind the wall.


Ooops!


LOL at me with new list on turn 1 already

I clearly don't have the forward thinking skills required to play it yet

He gets 12 shots with his arcus and obliterates my LS

He kills the eliminators I left out in the open too

He also gets an angle with just enough to see the forward infiltrators hiding behind the crate

I transhuman but he gets hot and wipes them


My list is supposed to trade efficiently...that was not a good turn of trading


Turn 2

CM fails to generate a CP again


I drop WG1 to do a ROD action

Cyberwolf advances to the middle objective


I repeat the stupid elminator mistake and block green squad from falling back

They are stuck in the open b/c CM walked forward


OMG this is hilarious...and maybe a side effect of playing a 4am start...heheh


He blasts the crap out of all units in the open and I lose another eliminator...doh



Turn 3

CM fails to generate a CP again


I have an all or nothing turn coming up


3 lucky things work

(1) Callidus rolls 1 for close DS to incursors on his rear

I drop WG2 Wulfen1 and Suppressor1 near his backlines as well


(2) WG2 make a 9" charge and wipe his incursors in rear


Callidus kills the nearby techmarine and I steal his rear objective away


In middle melee the 4 WG get savage strike and dump 10 wounds after saves and FNP on leviathan

(3) CM finishes the job making most of his 5+ to wound and kills a leviathan

Company veterans walk into middle objective with OBSEC help from chaplain


I get stranglehold and bonus priority targets

He makes me pay and pushes DEEP into my lines with his dread HQ

He kills my CM on the final failed save shooting


He then charges my chaplain with a leviathan and his dread HQ


I need my chaplain to live and give him transhuman

He rolls poorly and I only have 1 save to make

I have 3 wounds remaining and he does 4 damage a swing

I roll a 3 and get sad


If I had lived I have obsec and keep it


He has 2 dreads and only 1 of my eliminators is touching the objective through the wall so I lose it

Turn 4

*In real life we stopped after turn 3 and picked up a few days later

I sent him a screen shot telling him what I would do and the expected outcome if he wanted to save time. He asked to play it out instead. Good call by him and he ended up with 10 more points than I predicted.


I realize I made a mistake with my callidus...when I killed the techmarine I forgot to declare the assassin stratagem to get a CP for killing characters


Would have given my chaplain the CP he needs for a reroll on that last wound!!!


More new list mistakes...DOH


I am basically playing for points and move around to get stranglehold and my forward suppressors drop a ROD on his table quarter


I line up lots of ranged shooting at his techmarine but he uses transhuman and the first few salvos do nothing so I stop wasting time

I forgot what it is like to play a list you are not familiar with and made sooooo many noob type mistakes.


Getting practice reps with the SAME units is a big deal people!!!


It would have been nice to have additional las fusil shots every round to chip away at my opponent instead of throwing them away.


I also need more practice playing the ROD secondary. I need to plan ahead to put units in position to do the action. I got all these free jump pack units and didn't use them properly

The suppressors should have droped in the top right quadrant instead of top left


Finally...target priority needs work

I killed the 1 leviathan that was NOT a ToTheLast guy...doh



As for my list performance...chapter master went 0/3 generating CP in his initial game. I thought that was funny


I probably should have kept my wulfen up close to just charge into his dreads and not care if I die.


I need more practice so I know who I can throw away and when I can do it.


For a first time field test in a competitive environment I'm happy.

That game looked brutal but like you said you need more reps and it was a hard counter to your strategy. Hopefully you get another shot at list like it while your evaluating this playstyle because on the physical table top this style of list will be popular. That said scoring 70 pts is pretty impressive with a list your unfamiliar with, more so considering the pressure your opponent put on you.

 

I don't know if your pods let you keep track of the results of other players, but it may be worth following his list and seeing how it does vs. TS & GK. I'm far from a competitive TS player but that list would be a handful.

He placed his eliminators forward touching an objective

He put terminators in a corner and knights in the middle

I decided early my game plan would be just ignore the terminators and sit on the objective with wulfen. If he came close I could charge out


I deployed to avoid his long range guns


Put eradicators and a wulfen on the hunt

I have enough mobility that I planned to push hard down the far right flank

I win the roll for first turn with a 6 v 5

I didn't really want the first turn...oath of moment is harder to score

The good news is I have range and LOS to his flyer


CM generates a CP (woo hoo first ever!!!)

Chaplain gets catechism of fire on Suppressor1

I place CM rerolls on Suppressor1 as well


Left flank the WG raise a banner and the suppressor squads barely get LOS and stay at max range of his flyer


Middle the eliminators with morkai bolts step up to fire at flyer then fall back behind the wall (I leave them space this time!!!)


Right side eliminators step out to fire then fall back as well


I advance both cyberwolves to contest objective his eliminators are on. Only 2 are touching from his side of the wall


LS moves up to touch my forward objective and fires at eliminators to remove them. He activates transhuman to protect them

Callidus activates to make it cost extra CP

I don't hurt it with LS but I burned his CP and decide to focus on the real target


Eliminator1 fire lasfusils and morkai bolts at flyer

He activates high speed focus for 4++

Callidus does not activate

He stops my lasfusil wound with a 4

The good news is morkai bolts have landed


Suppressor1 with buffs puts 8 wounds on it only takes 4 damage after saves are made

Suppressor2 gets keen senses and manages 7 wounds with CP reroll and kills the flyer


After ending my turn I realize I forgot to fire the whirlwind (doh!)

He declares objective 6 as must hold...this surprises me b/c all he has guarding it is an infiltrator and his contemptor


He casts aversion on my whirlwind

casts repugnance on knights

splits fire into cyberwolves

wolf1 takes 1 damage from krak missile but SB kill it

wolf2 dies from SB as well


Leviathan kills LS

Contemptor kills suppressor1 and suppressor2 with split fire


He advances his knights and support units to the mid objective to replace his eliminators

Turn 2

I need to get attacks prepared to hit his infiltrators on turn 3 so I push in as best I can to set up my next turn

I bring everything in but decide NOT to charge objective 3 on the left

Instead I suppression fire his knights with the whirlwind and plan to attack elsewhere


Both my characters push hard right to help the advance up right flank next turn

WG drops in with them safe behind the wall


Wulfen comes in on the left and safe behind the wall

Callidus comes in right side exposed on his side of the wall but has LOS protection from eliminators on my side


I push original wulfen and an infiltrator forward to charge his outriders on the mid objective

Eliminators and eradicators focus fire on his leviathan

Leviathan takes 1 las fusil and morkai bolts

3 eradicators hit and explode the leviathan

1 MW on contemptor from the explosion


The bad news is my wulfen fail a 6" charge into his outriders on my mid objective

The infiltrators kill 1 bike with savage strike

His bikes kill 1/5 infiltrator then fall back after melee with swift strike stratagem

I survive his counter attack with OBSEC so he just left. I deny him hold more but don't score stranglehold

I am also down to 0 CP

Outrider shooting put 3W on infiltrators killing 2/4

Contemptor only kills 2/3 eradicators...wow i was not expecting a survivor here


Outriders charge and only kill 1/2 infiltrators (crazy wound rolls here)


My lone survivor passes morale and holds onto the objective to deny him stranglehold

We both go assault doctrine


Whirlwind advances to start driving to midfield where I hope to park and score oath


Chaplain fails all litanies and drives up to fight outriders with his crozius


Eliminator1 put 4 wounds and morkai on contemptor

Eradicator hits with both then rolls 4 1s for wound (2 1s followed by 2 more 1s)

CRAP!!!


I spend a CP to advance and charge callidus

Callidus fails a 5" charge into infiltrators even with CP reroll...CRAP


Good news is I make all my charges and get some massive fights going


WG1 put 24 wounds on ancient and kills him off the mid left objective

WG2 put 25 wounds on knights and kill 3/5


Unfortunately I make a positioning mistake and he pulls models to deny wulfen AND CM from attacking


gdamn I messed up bad here


Infiltrator kills 1/2 outriders


Knights kill 2/5 WG only in return

Apothecary drives over and brings back a dead knight...crap


Contemptor opens fire

Krak missiles kill eradicator

Volkite kill 3/5 wulfen and I somehow pass morale with them


WG went red hot and make like 10/12 saves and tank EVERYTHING in melee

His Terminators charge in and only kill 1/4 WG on the objective


My Chaplain activates and kills outrider in fight normal phase

His knights kill 1/3 eliminators with som ebad rolls as well


WG swing into his terminators to soften them up for my wulfen to finish the job

I get lucky and kill SS and 1 other terminator

Callidus eats 3 wounds from bolter fire but kills 2 infiltrators and is locked in combat on the right flank


Good news is my CM survives in the middle and scores OATH

Chaplain gives eliminators catechism of fire...I hit on 2 and wound on 2 into his contemptor

He makes a 5++ save and survives with 2 wounds


I go berserk into his lines

Wulfen1 kill his ravenwing apothecary and consolidate into eliminators

Wulfen2 do 11 wounds on terminators with FC and TH finishes the unit off

They consolidate into chaplain


My Chaplain gets 3 6s and savage strike to kill contemptor off


CM and kills 3/5 infiltrators and stands on the objective with OBSEC aura from chaplain to help

Callidus kills 1 more infiltrator leavin 1 survivor

The survivor then kills callidus in melee but I am contesting and turn off his secondary scoring and score stranglehold again


The infiltrator survivor raises a banner midfield

I park my whirlwind in the middle as well

I didn't want first turn but I think it made a big difference.


Taking out his flyer and getting immediate reinforcements let me chop down his firepower


The addition of the heavy melta is definitely an improvement over the prior version and lets me hit hard targets


The hit and run eliminators did great too. He told me post game they were very annoying.



I rolled a TON of 6s when I finally went after his terminators and knights

The LC and FC reroll wounds were priceless to counter his transhuman buffs


Great game but my list has the right tools to counter his tricks

I like the eradicators in your list, they do have a tendency to drop the ball sometimes but it really adds that hammer back to your list. I think the threat of them will help even if they drop the ball.

 

I tend to think most players running flyers are going to want to go first, so I felt like you were in a no lose scenario going first. Without the ability to stack -1 to hits flyers they're just really vulnerable. Good win though, and thanks for the report.

The eradicators make me nervous as hell when they fire

 

My latest version is dropping the LS to add a multimelta eradicator

 

takes me from 6 to 10 shots and gives more margin for error

I buff skyclaws with CM and assault doctrine and launch them at incursors

Infiltrators push up to charge them as well. I hope to use charge movement to deny his DP as well


Whirlwind kills 1 bodyguard on far right only

I push up to kill what he sent forward

I bring in the callidus and eradicators

Callidus rolled a 2 for a 5" DS and I originally wanted to drop in his rear to kill the bodyguard and pile into devastators

He reminds me he has auspex scan and I say CRAP...end up going after his forward VV instead


I kill devastator1 with my eradicators

Kill 4/5 assault1 with random shooting


Make all charges for warrior born


Callidus gets 5 hits and 5 wounds but he makes 2 saves and 3 FNPs...only loses 1 VV (DOH)

They kill callidus in return...crap


Wulfen kill incursors midfield behind his wall and consolidate into assault1 survivor

I was hoping to roll high and tag his contemptor but I got the minimum 6" charge I needed and didn't want to risk failing it on a reroll

WG kill assault2 in melee and brace for redemptor incoming fire by hugging the wall for cover

They rolled 9 6s only a single 1 on hit rolls

The VV unfreeze and activate to kill CM (did 5 wounds and I only had 4 remaining and 1 CP)

I wipe him out on right flank

Chaplain gets reroll all hits and the eliminators and vets just swamp his VV with attack rolls

I drop WG on left behind the crates to move up next turn


I use suppression fire from whirlwind on his nearby VV to counter a potential attack into my newly deployed WG

SW victory!!!


IH shooting is insane...but with all the walls on this map I was able to dodge most of it all game

The skyclaws got to shine on this map and I was happy with it

The shoot and scoot eliminators were big too...we were laughing at how they were butchering his guys in melee

I think I got 3 6's to hit both times they got into combat

Smashed the VV survivors from the Callidus fight and killed a bunch of devastators and tied them up to stop them from shooting


I was impressed by the melee forces in his list pregame but IH don't have the codex support to make them shine.

The WLT and Relics and stratagem boosts make a big difference


I was not happy with vital ground. My list doesn't have the durability to pull that off. I got lucky I was able to stop him from scoring to counter my bad choice.


I am now 2-0 in this league...2 rounds to go!




Other house keeping news


Pod 13 is officially over

My round 2 opponent couldn't schedule a game with me so I forfeit (it is a european league and I am the out of time zone player)

That dropped me to 0-2 and I dropped from the pod after.


GT list is now 2-0

I was matched against the very same player I just discussed for round 2 in the GT

This time the tournament is based on US time zones so he forfeited due to the schedule conflict

Ouch, at least it was a game where you can identify the mistake. Hopefully you get an opportunity to play against a psyker heavy force with this list.

 

I have had the same thoughts 

 

There are a TON of GK and Tsons in the two tournaments I am in but I missed them all up to this point

 

I was paired against Tsons in BOTH leagues this week

 

1 is a forfeit due to scheduling.  Since it is Copenhammer and I am out of time zone I will forfeit

 

The other will be played later tonight

His super brick of terminators is in LOS to shoot but too far away to reach with melee

That stops his grind and gives me abhor points

I can't remove that damn terminator block...he is too far away

I am extremely frustrated with how this is playing out...I know I am living on borrowed time and can't trade all 5 turns like this

I don't have a single beatstick anymore but I have numbers and armor of russ to make him fight last


I bring in my eradicators and shoot the terminators with everything

Morkai bolt rolls 1-1 so I have no reroll wounds

However there is a massive problem...traffic jam is interfering with movement


I have to activate company vets first but can't kill or I remove wulfen from pile in range

I intentionally keep 1 out of range so he can't swing


Wulfen activate next and get the executioners strat

Only 2/3 can reach engagement fighting range

Wulfen TH generates 6 wounds and kills 3 terminators

FC generate 4 wounds and kills 1 more


He is pulling models and making it harder for me to fight

My chaplain is now out of range unless I move CM around


I need CM to kill 2 or 0...

CM activates and kills only 1 despite causing 10 wounds

I just have 1 wulfen left and the terminators save 5/6 wounds


That sucked...he has 2 terminators alive still


Only kill 8/10 terminators despite throwing my entire army at them

I needed to wipe him to take the objective away

That was brutal. I was not expecting that type of game.


I usually dominate this map but his ability to teleport and shoot long range completely changed what I was expecting from this game


My infiltrators couldn't stop him b/c he just smite killed them away before needing to teleport

The culexis and chaplain did seem like a problem he was playing around but I didn't have enough punch to push forward and shutdown all his casting like I had hoped.


Not sure how I should adjust to deal with that...keeping my offense off the board in reserves maybe


Hmm...lots to ponder


The loss drops me to 2-2 and 1 game remaining in this GT

That game looked brutal. I tend to agree with your opponent that putting infiltrators in the corner he dropped the terminators in wouldn't have been a huge issue for him. That said he would have had to commit more resources, and I think it could have created openings for you. I'm also not sure he would have been able to achieve the redeploy on turn 1 when it was going to be the most effective.  Putting key units in reserve may be a good idea, but your lists seem to work best when you can cause enough damage turn one to force a response. 

 

Out of curiosity if you had gone first do think that the termies would've been as impactful?

First turn definitely would go differently

 

I would have taken him off the objectives and changed how his scoring played out bc I pushed forward

 

not sure if that is enough to win but it changes how the game unfolds

First turn and zone out would make it a better fight

 

I would prevent him from auto holding objectives (he was able to run and hide rubrics turn 1)

 

I would wipe rubric in middle and have half the map zoned out

 

he could smite my corner infiltrators down hard but in the process he exposes himself to a counter attack

 

that would let me go after targets a bit better

 

 

I made a major change to my list due to this game...I felt lots of small shooting wasn't getting the job done

 

I have too many MSU and not enough hiding places

 

Going back to LF drop pod but will try grav now

 

I can buff 1 unit and hit much harder

 

With 20 grav shots and 10 shots from a unit of eradicators I have 2 different units that can blast a hard target like terminators much better
