Legions with connection to Dark Angels

Greetings all.

I was hoping to get some insight concerning what, if any, titan legion(s) worked directly with the Dark Angels? Did any have a standing relationship with the Dark Angels?

I am mainly after appropriate color schemes for the lovely war hound models I snagged up. Appreciate any and all help!

They fought alongside Legio Ignatum on Sarosh if I remember right.

Other than that I don't think there were many specific examples beyond the usual "XYZ was a big campaign and most Legions/Legios mucked in".

Like Lord Marshal said, Legio Ignatum seemed to be operating alongside Dark Angels at least at times, but I don't think there are any indications that there was an especially tight relationship between them like there was, for example, between the Sons of Horus and the Legio Mortis. It does make sense though that if there were more instance of cooperation between the Dark Angels and some Titan Legios then Legio Ignatum and the other Mars-based Legios would probably be more likely, given that when the Great Crusade left the Solar System a large portion of the actively fighting Astartes would have been Dark Angels (since they were the first one to be created and at that time the most numerous) and on the Titan side the three original Titan Legios (Ignatum, Mortis and Tempestus). In those first years when there was an opponent that needed to be met by a combined force of Astartes and Titans, it was just mathemathically more likely that the Astartes would be Dark Angels and the Titans would be from the three big ones that originate from Mars.

Additionally in Crusade we learn that of the three Titan Legios that bore the name Legio Victorum, elements of each of them ended up pleding their allegiance to the Lion and the Dark Angels one way or another:

  • Legio Victorum I, the Foe Slayers, the titan legion of Phall suffered a loss of almost a third of their engines before they surrendered and pledged loyalty to the Lion alongside the remaining Mechanicum leadership of Phall who wanted to avoid the fate that befell Galatia and killed the traitors among them on their own
  • Legio Victorum II, the Foe Hammers, the titan legion of Galatia would suffer almost complete losses as the Dark Angels sanctioned Galatia with the remainder either serving with the traitors elsewhere in the galaxy and remaining loyal to the Warmaster or by surrendering and being placed under the control of the survivors of Legio Victorum III
  • Legio Victorum III, the Foe Breakers, the Titan Legio of Thule would suffer horribly for their loyalty with the Legio Victorum II destroying a majority of their war engines, which they had the least among the other Legios to begin with. The survivors would be rewarded for their loyalty once the Lion arrived in the Thramas sector and would pledge loyalty to him and the Dark Angels and in exchange were given command of the remaining parts of Legio Victorum II and their Apocalypse class titan was handed over to the Legio Victorum III to serve as their command titan

So if you are planning to do a force of Dark Angels with Titan support, you can't go wrong by going with the Martian legions (of which there are more than the three aforementioned) if your force is from the Great Crusade period and if you plan to have it set in during the Thramas crusade or afterwards, then basically any of the Legio Victorums would work perfectly.

This kind of question comes up quite a lot and, perhaps surprisingly, it's usually quite hard to answer. There's very little information about which Legios fought with which of the Astartes Legions during the great crusade. In fact it seems that the two types of forces fought largely independently of each other on their own campaigns, or that perhaps sometimes with relatively small detachments operating in support of one or other. It doesn't seem to have been common for long-term collaboration between them to take place. There are very few exceptions to this. Mortis and the Sons of Horus are the only one I can think of.

The good news about this is that you can genuinely pick any of the titan Legios to go with your Dark Angels. They may very well have fought together at some point and it would be impossible to say that they didn't. So I'd suggest picking one you like the look of and going with that, rather than trying to find a story to link them. There's nothing wrong with it if you do find such a story, but you could just as easily make up your own.

Lord Marshal-thanks for the info and suggestion.

Brother-Captain Gilead-great breakdown. Seems logical given the early history of the crusade.  Thanks!

Mandragola-thanks for also your perspective.  Given the scale of the conflict I could see a wide variety of forces operating in concert together.

That looks lovely - very striking scheme. Will you do stripes, checks and other heraldic patterns too? If so, how might that work with the marbling or will you use other colours for those areas (perhaps a black for a Disciples of Caliban feel)?

I like the marbling and the overall colour scheme. You might want to look into marbling techniques because there are some quite cool things you can achieve with spraying paint through a pulled apart baby wipe (believe it or not). I haven't tried it but the effects are great.

Yours looks good though. The trim needs another coat I'm sorry to say, or at least a wash and highlight. It probably looks better in person than in the massively magnified image on my screen though.

Gillyfish-thank you! I don’t think I’ll try adding stripes…hate to mess it up at this point. Also, like you pointed out, the color scheme would be a challenge for sure.

Mandragola-I tried the dried and pulled apart baby wipe but I could not get that to work properly.  Probably with the humidity I was dealing with.  Thx for the advice on the gold trim-I went ahead and did add another layer. Definitely helped!

Some more progress shots on the two warhounds (I keep wanting to call them war wolves for some reason).

Still have the base to do on this one ^. Leg/shin armor has been added as well, post pic.

Sun's out-thighs out for the green marble warhound.

And a mug shot.

Thanks for looking!

Come now my son, here is a company of miserable souls

Cold and undone, searing their conscious with hearts black as coal

Here now they lie, object of justice deserving of wrath

Speak your reply, what shall be done with them

Draw out your path.

-Every knee shall bow, every tongue confess.

Cry havoc and unleash the wolves of war.

The wolves, the wolves are at the gate!

Outside their wolves, the sisters were poised and noble in action and word. Once deployed to the front, floating within their animus attuning chamber, they changed. War horns bleating throughout the combat, conducting coordinated strikes with one another, and dancing gracefully between friendly armor and infantry-they were a sight to behold.

Thanks for looking everyone. I tried a few different things when it comes to taking pictures-still need to crack the code on lighting and such.

Hope you all had a great Christmas. Happy New Years!

Sherrypie-thanks for the comment!

Gillyfish-thanks to you as well!  I hadn't considered time frame for these minis but given the green scheme and the newer razorback frame, post HH would make more sense.  Though I'm trying to not constrain myself within given lore too much (though the younger me was really drawn to the Angels of Death lore).

Raziel, I can totally appreciate what you mean about the Angels of Death lore. I doubt m/any people will quibble or refuse to give you a game because the scenery on the base is not the right colour for the era their own models are painted for! In any case, I think it's quite cool to have something harking back to the old days of Epic as that does.

Thanks Gillyfish!  Throwing these minis in a game is highly unlikely at this point due to real life and such.  That being said I really enjoy these AT minis and wanted something a bit different from my DA so it’s still a win.
