Glaze or Inks Over Metallic Zenithal Primed Models

I’m in the process of putting together a paint scheme for my Blackshields and wanted some tips on an idea I’m kicking around. The idea is doing Zenithal priming using silvers and then using a grey ink, glaze, or something like Contrast paints so it looks more matte without completely losing some of the metallic sheen. Has anyone else done this who can give me pointers? Thanks!

The 50/50 Contrast/Contrast Medium mix is what I have in mind but I'm also mulling over using the Scale 75 Instant Color black since that range is much thinner than the Contrast line. Has anyone used those for this purpose?

EDIT: took out not entirely relevant, shinier, full recipe; replaced it with another example.

Here's a WIP shot of Leadbelcher and the contrast paint, only.

Vallejo Metal Color "Exhaust Manifold" airbrushed over black primer, washed with Black Templar Contrast. Basically Leadbelcher and BT Contrast.

That looks really smooth. How did you avoid the splotchy look you regularly get with Contrast paints?

Metallics are a bit "glossy" surfaces themselves. The rest is pooling control and using a larger brush, but not overloading it with paint.

I use gloss coats and oil washes, so I know the benefits of having smooth surfaces when using these kinds of techniques. Any thoughts on applying Contrast over gloss coats on metal primers?
