Fraters I have a  question.

I am working on building an apothecary for my command squad (Third UM Co.)  and wonder what is a good weapon for the right arm.   I can use a chain sword or plasma pistol.    Any answers is appreciated.

 :Troops:

What will they be escorting into battle? If it is a melee unit like Aggressors, BGV or terminators I would suggest the chainsword. 3 to 4 chainsword attacks are in my view better for that purpose than a couple of plasma shots. In my experience, good players will do their best to get to an apothecary that is with a melee unit (and for good reason), so it is good if they can fight back. Maybe mathhammer the average damage output against a handful of likely targets (i.e things that will get close to/in melee with whatever unit the apothecary is with) from the chainsword and compare it to the plasma pistol?

As of the current Codex, there aren't options for an Apothecary to take different weapons, unfortunately. GW doesn't allow options as much as they used to, because of issues they have over kitbashing etc.

However, I'd go with the Chainsword for reasons other than it being standard. I agree with Xenodragon; 4 AP-1 attacks is actually pretty good, going up to 5 with Shock Assault and you're likely to end up in melee anyway. The pistol you have will only get to fire once before that happens many games.

Teeth of Terra on an Apothecary can be an amazing thing - but in comes with one important caveat: do not give it to an Apothecary unless (1) there are no other characters in your list that could take it (as most will be better in melee than the Apothecary) and (2) you have the CP.

I've run TOT Apothecaries, they rock, but I am leaning more these days towards artificer armour (2+ and 5++) or the Ghostweave cloak (really good for getting out of being wrapped and trapped by fast and mobile melee units). I like to keep him alive as long as possible, and I find artificer armour (if there is not a better character to put it on) is great. Having the apothecary with a 2+, 5++ and 6+++ really helps keep them alive :)

This is true, while I love the ToT, I can fully appreciate the benefit of a more defensive relic.

I am slightly spoiled in playing Blood Angels meaning I can buy Teeth of Terra as a relic and then use the "Artisan of War" WLT to then get Artificer Armour as well.
