An Ancient Crusader... says 'Hi'!

Hello all,

Most won't remember me from these parts, but the truth is this is the first area of the BnC that I moderated. Way back... in 2006 I started the 'Expand your Crusade' hobby initatives and made little banners... lots of fun.

Most also don't know that the very first 50+ person tournament I ever won, way back, was with my Black Templars.

I have been lurking a while... quietly getting to take in all the newness that surrounds the current membership of new and old Crusaders alike. It's a fun time to be a Templar.

I don't know what exactly made me do it. The nostalgia? Memories of so many early tournaments? The history of my early BnC work? The time I spent with the chapter? Whatever it was, I convinced myself buying the new Templar Crusade box was..... a good idea?!?!

Regardless, I told myself I could only indulge in this if I painted up the infantry. So I picked it up on release (about 10 days ago) and I set about with a VERY rugged and involved task of painting up all the infantry.

But enough of my babbling, here it is:

I confess I completely underestimated the black armour (yet again. You'd think I'd learn after 5K points of Black Legion). The tabards as well... a lot of work. But so worth it on these great kits!!

Hi Prot buddy.

Now we just need Renaud to re-emerge and we can start an old boys BT thread where we sit and complain that orks were much bigger back in the good old days.

Your take on the launch box is lovely. I am still waiting for my box to show up in the mail. Any day now, hopefully.

You clearly still have the knack for black. I find your swords especially appealing.

How did you find the crusader squad sprues in terms of modelling?

Which assembled model is your personal favorite?

Hi Prot ! :smile.:

What is your black formula?

Hi- so I have it written down at home in my 40K recipe book... it is a slight change from my Black Legion recipe, building on a base of more blue/greens, but similar. I will try to remember to type it out tonight for anyone that wants to try it out..

Thanks so much... yes it's really like an old glove back here. (pain glove?) But yea it's been cool to see some old faces still around, and hopefully more. (the guys I elected to take my spot did not last long (aside from you!)

The sprues are fantastic... GW's new standard is just so detailed now you have to wonder if they will hit diminishing returns. I mean yes, the detail is amazing, but the paint time is just that much more involved.... compared to... some of my old BT's:

- Those old metal guys you could put in a sock and rob a convenience store with them!

- Assembled model... I'd have to say the Emperor's Champion. Love the basic chest piece decision, and as complex as the rest is, it just fit together so well and is VERY posable on any base type (as you can see from my own choice to slightly angle him upwards.) Just incredible. Invoking the image of truly terrifying judgement about to strike.

Welcome back to the BT section Prot, looking forward to your normal high standard of painting and insight :smile.:

Thank you, but I don't know about the insight. I've had 3 games and they've been... very tough. It's a tough codex. It certainly has been interesting figuring out my angle on it.

Welcome back. Those are some fine kaaaa-niggitz!

Wouldn't be a BT thread without a Monty Python reference!

They are utterly gorgeous models, I am seething with envy!

Thank you! Any army with a Holy Hand Grenade needs more python refs!

Thanks again for the kind words everyone.

I'm not sure how deep I'll get into this. The problem I have is I have a MASSIVE Ultramarine's army, and I started White Scars about a year ago to fill my 'close combat' requirements!!!

The problem is as much as I am in love with the character, and background of the army, the units I have are being tugged in all directions. It's hard to have get a new unit and then debate whether you paint it white, blue or now black!

Secondly, I play in a fairly competitive environment... I would say the BT codex (just my opinion) has a harder road than most out of the gate. While we see some codexes being released, and rocketing to the podium, I don't know if that will be the case here.

Again, only three games in, and testing new units at this point in these games. I hope you guys are having fun with the new upgrades, and all those cool relics.

Why terrible vs admech ?

Very elite weapon for elite targets. I got swamped down by 60 vanguard/rangers. (-1S/-1T) and just never got through them in time. I never had the volume of fire (I had too many bladeguard and chainswords instead of Bolters/etc).

By the time I made it to the lines I needed much more attacks, not so much strength of attacks, but volume.

Against those, do you think Sword Brethren with Power Swords have a bit of a niche?

Seeing as they're 3A+Shock Assault at S4 -3AP D1?

If I'm being 100% frank with you, as much as I loathe to admit it, the assault answer is Vanguard vets with claw/shield.

Is it over used? Yea. Is it probably going to get hammered by GW to prop Primaris sales? Probably. Is it a great answer for hordish armies in melee? I think so.

Shooting wise the Boltrifle is still best. We use a generous amount of terrain, and the way these Vanguard/Ranger blobs work, it's very hard to shift them with zero AP.

The Sword Brethren look amazing, but on table they are a hard pass for me. Blade Guard are immensely better at the same thing, but will last longer, and hit harder.

That's just my opinion for the games I've had so far.

Actually backing up a bit, the Crusader squad with half Assault bolters + flamer + half chainswords is a good tool on paper vs. a numerically superior foe, the problem is getting there.

To add one thing: the only thing that kept me in that game at all and made it close at the end was the Strat to prevent the opponent from falling back. I had almost no CP because of my pregame set up, but I saved 1 per turn to make sure the buggers couldn't retreat, and luckily I passed the 4+ each time ensure they were locked in (Vanguard can retreat/shoot without penalty as well.)

  • 2 months later...

Well I ended up selling that original Crusader squad in my earlier post.

I decided since GW released that Christmas box set that it gave me the discount to go forward with Templars! So I took the funds from the Crusader squad sale as well and pooled together some resources to buy this:

Ta-daa! I went way overboard here, but it forced me to get to town working on this new army.

After a few weeks of putting stuff together, I took that time to really examine the 'look' I wanted the army to have. I decided to go a little more 'Grimdark'. I hate that expression because it usually means caking the army in enamels, but I did want to go with a less 'hyper clean' look that my armies usually have.

So I did a few experiments. Pulled out some different mediums to come up with something I'm pretty happy with:

BT-New-Crusader-Brethren.jpg?w=738&ssl=1

So this is the template I want to use moving forward. (Hopefully better pics to come.)

The next squad I'm working on is the Assault Intercessor squad, and I'll say some of the amazing bits in the bits kit, AND this Crusader kit AND the Sword Brethren extras really help bring the typical Intercessor variants look much better. Even if it's a bit or two, I highly advise spacing them out. They look great on the 'basic' kits.
