Greetings, denizens of the Dark City.

During my time as an old school Dark Eldar player of the 3rd edition codex, I typically went kabal heavy or pure kabal. Huge focus on warriors, ravagers, sometimes mixed some wyches in, not always. I was usually successful, using surgical darklight and splinter attacks.

Since I have not played any 9th edition yet, has anyone gotten by with pretty much pure kabal? Blades for hire included, of course. At a push, perhaps a wych unit or two, without an obsession. Obsidian Rose would be my obsession of choice.

Essentially, can I relive the old ways of a single battalion (standard Force Organisation Chart style) of mostly kabalites with a few extras?

Sure, it should work just fine. The current system is designed to allow flavourful rules for the 3 sub-factions while still allowing them to operate as a single army but you don't have to use that tool if you don't want to.

Mechanised DE are pretty strong and if you want to leave most of the Wyches and Haemonculi at home for fluff reasons, your Kabalites should still work pretty well although it may leave you with a few weak areas such as melee. If that is how you like your Dark Eldar then go with it! smile.png

If ever in doubt, just remember the first rule of Warhammer. It's your army so run it how you like. smile.png

Sanguinius stood up, stretching his wings to their full extent. He flexed his hands. "I need no blade".
It was as though Sanguinius gleamed with pale light, his face white, eyes becoming blood-red, surrounded by the golden crown of flowing hair. Guilliman had witnessed glimpses of of his brother's wrath before, but had never seen the true Blood Angel unleashed. Sanguinius surged forward on alabaster wings, half a meter from the floor, whiteness streaming from him like flames.

Agreed, aside from playing your own army I think Kabals are good. They're the "main" DE force usually and have a good choice of toys, and shooting is still good in 9th so they should do well.

Would you ever field the single kabal battalion and include small numbers of the other subfaction, albeit without their obsession? We're talking like a single wych unit, for example?

No, you can field modest Cult units in a Patrol which you can play around with a bit unlike other armies thanks to the split nature of the codex - but a single Wyche squad isn't going to do that much and I think breaks your Kabal obsession so it's not worth it. The mercenary units like Scourges are fine to include here, if you want Cult or Coven units it's better to do it more meaningfully I think.

I'm just building up a force and will predominately be Kabal focused but will surely add in a patrol with some of the wych models i really like.

You still keep the detachment type obsession, in this case kabal, just non kabal units don't get one.

Cool idea! Between Kabals and Blades For Hire I think that could work pretty well tbh.

I'd probably recommend a double Patrol so that you can go with a double Court/Archon, and then both Poison Tongue venoms and Obsidian Rose trueborn / blasters / Ravagers etc.

At 2k double patrol looks like maybe:

2x Archon

2x Court (3 Sslyth + 2 Ur Ghul each)

1x 10 Trueborn (2 blasters / lance)

4x5 Kabalites (3 blasters)

2x6 Scourges (3 heat lance + 3 shredder)

2x5 Mandrakes

2x5 Incubi

2x1 Ravager (tri-lance)

3x Raiders (2 lance)

3x venoms (double cannon)

You could comfortably drop any of the Mercs for a fully 'kabalite horde' approach, but this is probably what I'd do ; )

Cheers,

The Good Doctor.

These are the droids we are looking for.

You could certainly do a battalion with the warlord and go pure kabal, then add a wych patrol for 0cp. All that requires is a wych unit and a succubus. This then gets you an obsession on both detachments, and one of the best punchers in the game (succubus is still a steal at 80pts) to go along with your wych unit.

I can only join in in agreement. Kabbalites are incredibly strong. In my last tournament I managed to take down 5 big and scary tyrranid bosses with my Kabbalite army. They have weapons that pack a punch and remember, all of splinter weapons can be a threat to big enemies like carnifexes or you know, stuff that has 20+ wounds and are almost unkillable to other armies. poisoned(4+) is usually good, since it applies to any targetable enemy, even if they have T10. kabbalites also have the ObSec rule, which is really exciting, cuz if you drop the Kabs' on an objective, lets say 2 gunboats, then every model in that unit will count as holding it, which can outclass most other armies for that important objective youre fighting about that can actually mean the difference between 10 and 15 points, where the one who holds it, gets 15P for holding more objectives than the opponent. also, one last thing, insane movement, and you can fire from inside venoms and gunboats. :D thumbsup.gif
