Hello!

Due to some unfortunate circumstances I find myself soon to be in possession of a very old Death Guard army that I build way back when from the old 3.5 Chaos Codex. So I am wondering just how well what I had, will have again, will fit in with the new Codex and models.  from memory I had several Terminators, several squads of Plague Marines, a Land-raider and maybe a Predator, A Dreadnaught maybe two, A squad or two of Plague bearers, a Grater Daemon of Nurgle, the old metal one, some Chaos spawn, a defiler and a few Characters. One of them was a Daemon Prince made from the body of an Obliterator. The other maybe a sorcerer.
I'm finding I am a little excited to see this army again. I have no pictures any more they were on a photobucket account back in 04' or 05' and have been lots to time. I'm thinking I may repaint this army this year and add to it as well.

So then, just how much has Death Guard changed? What should I add? Can I still play all of this from the same codex?
What should I add to get this back into fighting condition?

Thank you.

And as a side note I am likely to launch this into a project thread when I get this army back, pictures wip and battle reports on occasion.

Welcome back to the long war! Hope to see a project thread from you in the near future.

A great deal has changed for the Death Guard. Based on what you've listed:

  • Plague Marines, Land Raiders, Predators, Dreadnoughts, Spawn, Defilers, Chaos Lords/Daemon Princes/Sorcerers are all fine. Some of these units have new loadout options, particularly Plague Marines, but everything will be usable without much issue.
  • Terminators still exist but with limited weapon options as one of two varieties: either Deathshroud (armed with scythes) or Blightlords (armed with combi-bolters and axes/swords). Loadout options for both are heavily limited, so e.g. if you have power fists on your Terminators, they're sadly not usable unless your opponent is happy to proxy.
  • Daemons are no longer part of the Death Guard list (they are their own army now). You can still currently use them in your army either through summoning or by including a separate Chaos Daemons detachment, but you won't find the rules for them in our codex. Including a detachment from another army will come with some in-game negatives.

I'd probably recommend picking up some Poxwalkers (basically rebranded Plague Zombies) and maybe some of the fancy new daemon engines (Plagueburst Crawler or Foetid bloat-drone are my favourites) and Blightlord or Deathshroud Terminators. The good thing about Codex: Death Guard is that while some choices are more competitive than others, there's very little in the book that is terrible (imo), so just picking up what you like the look of to start with isn't a bad idea.

Thank you all for the replies!

I had a brain fart and forgot I could skim Death Guard a little with Battle Scribe. So, I'll do that.

I'm a little sad to hear about the Terminators, I remember just being able to put the mark of Nurgle on them was quite the boon back then. (Thematically if not on the table top. But still.)
I'll be happy to add a few new units as I can. Not sure just what game format I plan to use them in yet. Lots to figure out once I have them on hand.

Death Guard have their own 3 Daemon engines and access to the defiler, they don't have access to other ones. Their Daemon engines are Plagueburst Crawlers, which have a mortar that doesn't need line of sight and can take anti tank guns or flamers. One of the most point effecient and nicest looking models in the range. Myphitic Blight haulers are like ranged helbrutes that are more mobile. Foetid Bloat Drones are flyers, and can have a melee weapon, flamers or ranged. Both the haulers and the drones are only 9W and don't bracket which is nice. Haulers can be taken in groups of 3 and are -1 to hit in melee. All three look amazing.

As far as reading, there are some books. Dark imperium, plague wars and godblight are a trilogy, and have Mortarion and Guilliman come face to face and blow to blow. A one off book that is my favorite is Lords of Silence. It is about a DG ship that gets lost and meets up with a word bearers ship and assaults the white consol (ultramarine successor chapter) home planet. Lots of fun, shows how well kept the death guard are but how shady other chaos Legions treat each other.

Edit: when you asked about reading my head went straight to novels, not about DG on the tabletop haha.

Just to add to PC's comment re: reading, on the tabletop side of things, Goonhammer has a "getting started" article that contains some useful information, and a "start competing" article which is aimed at competitive players but will still provide useful insight if you're looking to see what's considered popular/powerful at the moment.

One topic which returning player will face, is aesthetic problems. DG products range was "re-invent" at beginning of 8th, with excellent quality, iconic "rotten" style and well-grown scale(the height of new DG model is obviously taller than old marine model; equal to/1~2mm shorter than primaris marine).

You may feel(that is 100% depend on your own decision) your old collections look like ugly dwarfs.

Thank you for that bit.
I did spend a lot of time doing green stuff work on my Death Guard and I am really wondering how well those will match with the new models. I guess I'll have to rebase which may help a little with the Dwarfism. I can elevate them on the bases but that wont change any of the other proportions. Maybe no one will notice!
I skimmed the prices for new models and yikes, some of them cost a fair bit more than I had expected. Also looking at the army deals, combat patrol and battle force sets it seems like my old models may have become redundant?  (I hope not.)  but I will be searching out deals when I am ready to shop.
Mortarion... He cost a lot....

I do expect I'll build a set of matched play lists and some more open play style lists for games with my good friends.
I had been thinking about getting back into chaos, I had an Iron Warriors army many many years ago, and had been thinking of doing that again with Death Guard stuck in some how. I'm still thinking in older formats. But that was before I found out I would be getting this army back. I'll post about that when I have it in hand.

It's been so long ago that I had these that I can't remember who I sold them too. Funny bit is I remember taking them to the Necronomicon in Orlando but only played one game with them the night before the WFB GT, right before 4th edition I think I met Andy Chambers that weekend.
I'm very much looking forward to sharing pictures of these, I am also in a weird place where I wonder if these are even my old models or not. Strange situation, don't want to jinx anything.

If you look in this forum for the Unit of the Week you be might get some tips on how units currently fair

If you look in Deathguard Resources (pinned at the top of this forum) you can see the list of all the units that have been covered so far

Currently doing one of the new Daemon engines - the Foetid Bloat Drone - and I was considering doing Daemonprince next

Does anyone know if the Adrian Tchaikovsky book Day of Ascension is out yet?

I am a massive fan of his other, non-BL work so can't wait to see what he can do with the 40k material.

Not yet, various retailers have it scheduled between 1st and 3rd February. You can check with the ISBN 9781800260917.

Update.
I've got my hands on the codex now.
Lots to absorb. I'm not seeing myself jump in to a competitive list right away there just so much I am finding I am excited about.
I'm mostly a hobbyist and play socially, there's a lot of creative juices bubbling right now.
Not 100% sure how this translates to playing actual games. Honestly I'd love to do a very flavorful Killteam.

I've found deals on the combat patrol boxes, battle force and maybe the Dark Imperium set. Wishing I had bothered to buy that starter box now..
I'm holding my breath, so to say, waiting to see my old models and what ever else was added to that army.
I guess I can go into a little more details about the circumstances here.

One of my old friends ended up with this army and I don't know how he got it, second hand but from whom? Lost to the time fog.
Sadly my friend passed away from a Hart attack on 20 Dec last year.  His mother whished that all of his collections be given to his friends and I was told second hand from another of my long time friends and arrangements have been started. My friend, who passed, had a house full of gaming and seemed to always find things. we found magic cards in a shop, fallen empires or revised, back in 03'-ish. In some shop in Memphis or Atlanta.  It seemed at time he was just a cosmic magnet for hard to find or out of print/production stuff.
He was a really good dude too.
And so, here we are.

Right now what I want from this death Guard project are.. to quote GWAR, "Wars that were so fun you didn't want to win."

Ah, this brings me back to the models, I recall hearing that weapons load outs for some units changed some how from the dark Imperium set to now but I don't know the particulars or am I remembering incorrectly?

I've found all of two pictures of models from this old army.

These are where I was back then and this army will need a lot of tlc

Oh man, that's a sad confluence of events how you got your old army back. I guess your friend's memory can live on with this project. Wishing you joy with your new, old army.

Thank you. I am looking forward to seeing that old army again.

Yes it super sucks, I never saw this coming or expected anything like this. I agree this is a good way to remember my friend and I am thinking about making it my full time project and army for the rest of 9th maybe more. My friend had health issues probably his whole life but this was out of nowhere. Hadn't really even spoken with him in the last 6 months or more. It's really making me look at things a bit differently.  I think the last communication we had was a dirty joke of some kind I sent him.  We'd all rather have him alive, he went to school with one of the shop owners too. I can't ever remember seeing him mad at anyone or even complaining about how a game went, if it didn't go his way. He was just a really good person to have around.

Hope you check back in on this thread once I get it really going later this month or early next month.

Thanks for your kind reply.

I just lost a friend of thirty years as well. Inherited his Space Wolves all assembled. My plan is to paint them all up and take them to Warhammer World for an In Memorandum game before putting them on display in my cabinet

This is a wonderful thing about our hobby. It transcends the game and brings meaning to events in our lives.

Very true.

And now an update.

I found a bag of Zombies from wargames factory I had been working on several years back and set aside. 20 in the works of the 32 I have to hand. As I am just playing with friends when I play I'll use these as Plague walkers until I get some. These Zombies look like civilians and if I continue to add 3rd party zombies I'd like to add workers, school children, teachers, whole families and more.  I like these as they are are in a variety of sizes in the 28MM scale. I think these will make my Plague Marines look more impressive.

I've stuck together my first list based on what I remember but am likely misremembering from my old collection. I'm not 100% sure I had 2 Defilers or just the one I I know for sure. (But were there two of them...? )

Clearly this list will be missing all the new cool stuff at first.

Oh, and among the other news about this collection I was told there were extra bits from some one, it's unclear who just now.

I am sad about the loss of Plague bearers not sure how I will sort that out just yet but I do have them and will be looking for a way to use them.

I know "everyone " will be thinking in terms of 9th edition but I am open to playing anything from 2nd onward should the opportunity present itself.

Anyway thanks for reading.

It aint over till it's over!

Plaguebearers are still legal to summon 'for now' if you have the 8th ed Chaos Daemons codex, nobody knows what will happen to summoning in the 9th ed daemons book. Mixed Nurgle is okay if you're bringing Death Guard vehicles to round out a daemon army and counter productive if you're throwing a little daemon infantry in a death guard army.

Plaguebearers were one of the best infantry troops in 8th ed and are still quite good.

I don't have it now but I will look into find it and watch of the new one when that finally happens.

I play matched play with my Competitive friend as often as I can and have started playing solo games of less than proper matched play just to help me remember how to play. I'm open to playing more story driven open play style games if any of my other friends have the time to just have a war or sorts which is how I figured I would end up incorporating everything if need be.

Thank you for the heads up I will defiantly do some digging.

I don't overly care about how good my army is as long as I can field all of my models. I know that sounds less than competitive but that's what my gaming life has become for good or ill.

Can't really be helped right now.  I am hopeful to get more games in this year than last year which will help a lot.

Update.

Got a call. My Friend is delivering the Death Guard to me on Friday. Sooner than I had expected to get my hands on them.

I'll be kicking things off with pictures very soon as I have sorta finished these first 20 Zombies. I don't know I think they're done but, well table ready for sure anyway.
I also found another Death Guard model that I bashed up way way way back maybe before the 3.5 codex. Not sure if I can use him as is now but he was cool and I'll post pictures of him as well before I rebuild him. I think now he might count as a TDA Sorcerer, not sure. The loss of Plague Swards and changed of to the wat we filed Death Guard characters/heroes this edition is limiting and I have a few favorites now from the codex that scream "Field me you fool! "  Where the old models are concerned, waste not want not is my motto.

I have a few projects in mind that I look forward to doing. I did find in another old army two converted defilers.
and maybe I can bash that into one really big ugly one after I buy more green stuff.  found a metal Chaos Dread as well. Hopefully I can find proper arms for it. I'd like a hammer and a twin heavy bolter. I think I have that heavy bolter around somewhere. The hammer, I'm not sue maybe I can find one in plastic from a bitz shop.

Lastly for today I will be renaming this thread now that I officially have this army coming to me. Once upon a time I was on the long gone Death Guard forums under the name..? Iron rot if I recall so I hope to somehow incorporate that name into the title of this thread.  I can't recall who started that forum but I do remember they had been featured in the White Dwarf just before or around the time that forum came to life. So way back like 04-ish maybe earlier.

More soon!

Sorry to hear about your friend dude, that's really sad. I'm glad the army founds it's way back to you, though, it's really cool looking, and it's always great to see a really 'chaotic' army - they're few and far between these days.

I'm in a similar situation with Thousand Sons - been collecting since 3rd ed, and have stuff like Terminators with MoT with powerfists, etc. You can either run them as a separate CSM detachment, or just use them as the DG equivalent and tell your opponent what they are. For Thousand Sons, terminators only have 1 melee weapon choice anyway, so counts as is not an issue. You can easily say 'swords and maces are swords, axes and fists are axes', and nobody will mind.

That's a fair point and gives me a few ideas. One being I might counts as my Plague bearers as possessed. Just to put them on the table with out faction issues.

My friend sent me a picture of the bin these models are in and my huge Chaos spawn was near the top. I made this from a base ball sized wiffle ball. With some work I think it will be a proxy for another Nurgle Daemon, it's far too large to be a spawn now. I am starting to remember that I made the TDA from Metal Grey-knight terminators. I just can't recall how many I have.  I think the rule of cool will carry this army into games will little trouble and a small amount of explanation, I'll play very powered down if and when I play with randos. Until we get to know each other then, well, we'll just see. (Laughs maniacally.. )

My recent game theory revolves more around moving models to objectives and taking a beating more than full on fighting and I kinda hope I can build a list to do just that that.

I just discovered I had a Herald of Nurgle in my glove box. So I am painting this dude currently.
