Toyship's DIY Primaris

Thank you all for the replies! Your encouragement keeps me motivated to move on.

I am pushing hard to finish painting the force in the second picture from the first post, it is about 500pts give or take. I have started and failed many projects but 2022 is the year of 40k for me. I got the Christmas Battleforce, and some more reinforcements arrived today (ETB Redemptor Dreadnought, Indomitus characters, Primaris chaplain on bike), so that will be what this force is expanded into for the foreseeable future.

I am working on fleshing out the background for these guys, but that is still in it's infancy. So far I have the following:

They are Ultima Founding, based in the Segmentum Pacificus on the edge of wild space in a nebulous region known as the Witch Stars. They prefer pinpoint accuracy in their strikes, and they are careful to mitigate collateral damage to civilian infrastructure due to the tenuous hold the Imperium has on the region, every world is precious. Often they strike from afar and fade back into the void, their foes and allies none the wiser that they were ever deployed in-theatre. The Night Spectres are highly insular, even for the famously aloof Adeptus Astartes, and none have ever seen a battle brother without his helm. This has led to rumors and supposition that they are but ghosts in power armor, or that their brotherhood bears an uncanny resemblance to ancient forbidden pict-captures of a traitor primarch, or something far darker.

Any comments/criticisms/advice on the background is greatly appreciated. Enough waffling, more pictures!

I have begun work on the hellblasters. I was terrified to paint these guys because of the plasma coils. Turns out that my worries were for nothing, as I think these turned out rather well. You tell me?

Here you can see the weathering process has begun on the hellblasters, just three more to go. I make sure to keep the models that are already finished close to hand to make sure the weathering is consistent across the army.

Thanks again everyone!

@Kythnos- thanks! I had a flash of inspiration while trying to sleep so I had to try it out. Glad that it comes across well!

@space wolf- well, if I get around to writing it I will probably do a short story explaining it, with perhaps an inquisition agent doing an autopsy on a fallen brother or something. Just early ideas. I’m thinking either Horus or Alpharius (leaning towards the latter) because both geneseeds had noted gene expressions of making the or hosts look like the primarch. Really, the main reason is I thought it would be cool to sort of riff on the Mandalorian’s religion of not removing his helmet. But there are rumors Cawl used traitor geneseed so that’s too good to pass up.

The something far worse was thrown in and may be edited out as what could be worse than a traitor primarch? Thank you for questioning so I have to actually think about this stuff. I really appreciate it.

Thanks for the replies guys, I haven't updated in a couple days and that is because I was really unhappy with how the battle damage was turning out. The test model had real fine, well placed battle damage, but as time went on and painting sessions became split up, the battle damage became vastly different. Blobby. Horrible. So I sprayed everything black again and started over. I wound up with the following, way out of left field:

Meet the Warhawks; a chapter destroyed during the 5th Black Crusade, reborn during the Ultima Founding. They are descendants of the Khan, their name harkening back to his ancient title.

I am getting everything painted to this level while I wait for transfers to wing their way from England courtesy of the B&C's own @LutherMax. Once those arrive I will get all other details and basing complete. Hope you all enjoy the new direction, I feel infinitely better about this color scheme.

Now that is a very nice green! Looking forward to seeing these warriors reborn.

Thanks Dosjetka! I am about to work on the Heavy Intercessors!

That green is awesome!

Thank you! I'm very proud of it, came together on a whim!

Love the green. Chapter destroyed in the Tide of Blood, going to reference any of that in the new build?

Thanks Kurgan! I plan on referencing it in the background for sure. Something about the newly founded Chapter cleansing the fallen Chapter's fortress monastery and taking it as their own speaks to me. Maybe some bits of living up to the former Chapter's name and legacy as well.

This is my Captain. There are many like it, but this one is mine.

So its been a while, distracted by many things, plus work, kids, and going back to school at 33. Who knew it could take so much time? I started decals on these guys tonight.

The Raptor heads are from the B&C's own @LutherMax. His stuff is fantastic, check it out at themightybrush.com. The unit markings are from the Tomekeepers sheet. Thanks to my buddy Greg for those. Need to get these guys to 500pts, and then further. It's really a shame that Marines aren't in the best place in 40k right now, but I'm in it for the narrative anyway.

Got fluff to work through yet, been reading the Heresy Black Books for inspiration. Being White Scars successors I am digging the idea of scout/pioneer groups. Maybe the Warhawks place an emphasis on ranging in front of Imperial forces trying to cross the Cicatrix Maledictum and relaying information back to them? Maybe.

Sad to see the Spectres are gone, but the Warhawks look striking! I love the thought of recycling ideas from the black books and giving them a new lease on life in the 40k era. Would love to see how you incorporate those aspects of the pioneer companies. The rift is an extremely volatile zone, and pathfinders charting safer routes of passage and alerting allies of what stirs in the dark would be a cool theme to center them around.

I may come back to the Spectres at some point, I was really digging the scheme, I just messed up the weathering so bad after the first guy that I couldn’t bear to keep going. Silly, maybe.
