Combat Patrol - 500pts Necrons

So I'm looking to put together my first Necron Army which I'm starting work on - I'm not looking for anything uber competitive (from what I've read I've picked the wrong faction for that) but I want something that is relatively balanced and has options on the field.

I've taken a quick look at the missions for Combat Patrol and its all objective based so having a few smaller units that can undertake actions seems sensible.

Principle of this list is that the Necron Warrior blob will move for the central / contestable objective(s) the idea being to stand, contest and kill. They will be buffed probably by the Chronomancer.

The Skorpekhs will act as a hammer unit to lend their power wherever it is required.

Scarabs will either act alone to capture an objective, tie up a unit, or act as a speed bump in front of the warrior blob.

Cryptothralls will be home objective babysitters / action performers.

Obviously Chronomancer is warlord who will primarily be buffing the Warriors or potentially the Skorpekhs depending on the situation. He has the Veil of Darkness so can either do some late game shenanigans moving units around to contest or respond to the situation on the board. He has entropic lance for anti-vehicle / anti-character work.

Your Warriors are already Objective secured, so in such a small point game, I'm not sure how much value you'll get out of Eternal Conquerors. Given the small map size you'll be playing on, I think Rad-wreathed would probably be more effective.

Leaving 10 points off the table is not insignificant in a 500pt game. If your Chronomancer is supporting your Warriors, they will already be protecting him, you don't really need the Cryptothralls. My recommendation would be to cut the Cryptothralls and 1 Scarab swarm giving you 55 points, plus your 10 free to include a unit of 5 Flayed Ones for 65 points. If you do end up with going Rad-wreathed over Eternal Conquerors, it's really good for them too.

That's my two cents on the list at least. Best of luck.

That sounds like an excellent idea, I couldn’t do anything with the 10pts in the initial list.

I wasn’t going to use the Cryptothralls as bodyguards, just objective sitters but I think a unit of Flayed Ones will certainly contribute more overall, especially with rad-wreathed. I really like the Flayed Ones as models (and I have some in my Worldscour box) but from what I’ve read I may be formulating a cursive hex with your name on after trying to assemble them.

They weren't all that bad to build. I actually rather like the kits (despite the absurd price of those two tiny sprues) because while they seem more-less mono-pose, all but one of them are really easy to convert to look very different by just swapping around some of the arms. (I'm not very good at conversions so this was a nice change of pace for me.) A few of the arms match up their fleshy bits with parts on the shoulder, so you want to be careful to know what goes where if you want to go that route, but it's less than half so it worked out pretty well.

Oh, so I totally forgot about your relics and Warlord Traits.

There's not much in the way of good relics for Crypteks, Veil of Darkness won't really do anything for you though. With the pre-game move, you'll likely be moving closer than 9" on your first, or at latest your second turn anyway. The only other options are Nanoscarab casket, which is okay with Enduring Will, of the Gauntlet of the Conflagrator, which while not great, but is probably your best bet as it will likely deal out a couple mortal wounds and can be shot in close combat. As for Warlord Traits, Enduring will is good, the other decent option would actually be Honorable Combatant. If you get stuck into melee, maybe Enduring will Keeps you alive a turn, but you're probably not winning combat, 2 bonus attacks with that Entropic Lance could down a character. Food for thought.
