Thoughts on a Venerable Contemptor?

Recommended Posts

I feel that Custodes are lacking in good vehicle support, and I am not sure I want to go down the route of the various FW options as I don't feel confident in their long term support (in terms of models and rules).

A Contemptor with a Multi-Melta seems reasonably priced, and is a core unit that can benefit from character auras. What is the opinion regarding this unit?

I am very much aware that the model itself is... not very good. I was thinking about investing in one of the FW Custodes Dreadnoughts and then attaching the power fist and Multi-Melta arms instead of the exotic weapon options.

MM/Fist is definitely solid since 9th's boost to melta weaponry. A non-degrading profile with a 5++ and the -1 Damage rule is solid, I definitely like Contemptors.

The FW ones are far better than the plastic versions and not too expensive compared to some of their kits. My only advice would be to magnetise the shoulders so you can swap weapons to your heart's content.

Yeah a MM Contemptor can really assist a Custodes army in bringing down big beasties and vehicles thanks to its movement getting those shots where you need fairly often.

I got to echo the thoughts of Kahedron here and say is use magnets if you can so you can alternate between a standard Venerable Contemptor and the specialist FW versions. Gets you more bang for your money at least.

One thing to bear in mind is that we have seen a picture of a new plastic Contemptor as part of the Horus Heresy leaks which looks a bit better than the current incarnation. Since you are playing Custodes, I would go for the FW version but if budget is an issue, waiting to see if the new plastic is imminent might be worthwhile.

Incidentally, I'm not sure FW Custodes stuff will be going anywhere any time even medium term. It's all a core part of the HH game and does look amazing.

I could see them separating the 2 product lines which would be very upsetting since I just bought a Telemon Dreadnought, but Custodes just don't feel like they get enough support in the main 40K game to warrant that.

As I just finished magnetizing mine, I’ll just say that the standard pose is horrible… but you can do minor adjustments fairly easily (unfortunately adjusting the knees would be tough) and I don’t think he turns out too badly:

I agree that he isn’t as ornate but I quite like the smoother lines.

Edit:

To answer your actual question, they're OK but wirse then Fw Dreadnoughts. MM is ok but you're definitely better off with preators that are faster and generally tougher per point and do more damage per point.

Found old post with some pictures of my ones.

One is more converted than the other but are the monopose under everything.

Agree with above point it's easy to change up legs and really helps. There were lots of spare hands from FW kit and some spare feet too which helped jazz up regular ones.

And using press moulds on a fist adds some character:

And grouped together (telemon is scratch built from a hulk buster suit so a bit big)
