Bladeguard Trim Colors

Hey friends,

I’m currently redoing my 5th Company of Fists with full Primaris, and going full stupid with codex adherent markings and coloring.

This hasn’t been a problem until I reached my Bladeguard Veterans; I know they’re 1st Company Veterans, but GW has shown them multiple times with black trim instead of the white of the 1st Company. While black does look sweet as heck and was the trim color for the IF up until the Codex was implemented, I’m not super sure about what to do? I know Veterans are often on loan to other companies, but it feels weird to have them change their shoulder trim when literally no other unit does this. Even the official GW Ultramarines Bladeguard have gold 2nd Company trim and I’ve seen a handful of discussions about this here and there.

Any thoughts on what color to go with?

Any thoughts on what color to go with?

I would go with the rule of cool. If a particular colour scheme looks better, I would rather paint it that way and come up with headcannon to justify it rather than paint in a scheme that I liked less just because a painting guide said so.

If in doubt, always refer to the first rule of modelling.

  • They are your models, paint them how you like! :smile.:

Besides, Bladeguard veterans post-date the original Codex Astartes - it might not even be a codified rule, rather a typical way of utilising the gear.

Given all the other primaris stuff twisting the codex, having a squad of bladeguard sub in for something else (say, an assault squad) in one of the battle companies seems perfectly acceptable in my book.

I agree with the paint them whatever you want.

GW said at one point that they could be part of the 1st Company or could be essentially the company veterans of another company (kinda like the Company Veterans unit that is part the command squad). So they could be a from the 1st company or be a permanent part of another company.
