Diving into the Heresy.

Recommended Posts

Hello everyone. I like many others I'm sure are a bit excited about the upcoming Heresy Starter set..in fact I was soo excited I bought some a Mk3 squad to work on in the meantime. I plan to go with the 1st Legion set in the later parts of the war so with that I do have some questions as I'm not super familiar with all the background yet.

With the Dark Angels has it been revealed when exactly they went from Black to Green?

I know Mk6 is the newer Mk in the Heresy so would it make sense for Veteran squads to be in earlier Mks?

Are there any GW plastic kit that work or were around in the late parts of the war?

If you've made it this far..thank you for taking the time to read the ramblings of a new 30k player.

It is my understanding the switch to green occurred after the Heresy as The Fallen retain the black color scheme.

It would make sense for veterans to have first dibs on armor and armor replacement.  This means it would come down to preference between either the newest marks, oldest marks, or just personal taste.

For plastic kits, all three forms of terminator armor were present at the Siege of Terra, by Terra mkVI was coming into prevalence among the legions but mkIII and mkIV were also present in significant numbers within most legions.  Predators and land raiders were present in large numbers, however, the land raider crusader and land raider redeemer were not used.  Casterferrum dreadnoughts were used by all legions and growing on prominence as the heresy progressed.

Great to see more people interested in the Horus Heresy, potentially the best thing about the new edition and 'starter' box is making the game more accessible.

DesuVult has given some good advice on plastic kits, so I will just expand on some of the points with my 2 cents:

There are quite a few 40k kits which can be used in Horus Heresy games and with some minor conversion work you can make many kits look more in keeping with the Horus Heresy aesthetic.

- attack bikes; many people switch out the MKVII torso/head/shoulders for MKIII/MKIV and you can even swap the legs, Kromlech do some MKII style biker legs https://bitsofwar.com/home/311-legionary-biker-legs.html   You could also use the standard space marine bikes for Outriders or Hussars

- land speeder; there is a resin proteus pattern land speeder, but I have seen lots of people use the 40k plastic version in Heresy games

- basilisk; there is a resin version of this kit which includes legion crew, but the plastic imperial guard version could work fine

General advice: if you MUST build stuff before the new books drop, keep the load outs very basic. We don't know for certain what special load outs will come or go with a new edition. It would be a shame to have to chop off the arms on your new stuff so soon

To piggy back on this, don't make anything based off the phase 1eaks (the traitor document). We know it's changed a few times already and might have changed more between the beta test and release version, as gw has been known to do in the past.

Just get your bits ready.

Are you suggesting something about the 1st Legion? ;) I know how edition changes can be..my plan is to build the Mk3s up as just a basic veteran squad and get comfortable painting all the black.

Sounds like a solid plan!

As far as Corswain goes, I'll leave that for someone who plays 1st legion (especially if it comes to likelihood of Corswain getting a proper model).

Something to consider is maybe making a generic HQ choice with your model. Basically making a model you can get a lot of milage out of. Maybe give him a sword (or axe if leaks can be believed) , and it can be a regular power weapon or a paragon weapon or whatever cool legion stuff DA gets. Maybe slap a holster on his hip and that pistol can be a bolter/plasma/archeotech/whatever.

Maybe he's a praetor one game and a consul the next.

When starting, try to add extra value to your models

Gf surprised me by ordering the Praetor in Cataphractii armor from FW.

Which got me thinking..How would one build Corswain? Would you use the DA Praetor in PA or start somewhere else?

Check out the Dark Angels Facebook group, 30k Dark Angels Players - The First Legion, which is has amazing kitbashes for Corswain and other models for the legion. It’s also a fantastic place to ask for Dark Angels black recipes as well. Edited by Cris R

Between the new edition build up and its associated pulling in newbies, as well as the GW kit churn there definitely is a need for a guide on how to get started.

Hopefully GW does something of the sort soon-ish.

They should. Even for experianced 40k players there are some big changes, in terms of getting started. Edited by Marshall Mittens

I think it's obvious that GW's first recommendation will be "Buy the Horus Heresy launch box. It has everything you need to start playing exciting battles in the Age of Darkness!"

I don't expect much else until after that is released, when they inevitably start pushing infantry boxes and tanks.

At the moment I'm approaching my army composition as HQ and a couple of troops until the box is revealed/goes up. Having seen the playtester stuff I'm fairly sure I know what direction I'll be heading. Outside of that it's all about the rule of cool.

I think that's a sound approach to take.

Plodding along as I build the AoD box,Rhino and Kratos. Think I've settled on a black look I like using Corvus Black and dry brushing. Not totally complete yet..but I'm liking it soo far.

Nice! I rather like that look for destroyers. What colour are you drybrushing over the corvus?
