Grey knight thoughts / new ideas

Good day Brothers,

So armour of contempt is out and it is wonderful. However this new breath of life has got me looking at some other things in our codex. Here are some random musings.

1) so terminators are much more survivable. Soo woo paladins with armoured reseliance. But also what about Dreadnaughts as they also get armoured reseliance. I think multi melta dreads are now quite nice. Though need to keep an eye on how many armoured resilience we want to try and cast.

2) vehicles. All vehicles bar dreadknights are slightly better. Definitely looking at rhino's and razorback. But what about a landraider?

3) with brick paladins potentially coming back what about a chaplain. And not for words of power. No. Refrain of convergence. Unit can't be affected or targeted by psychic. I could see this being very problematic for armies to deal with. Everyone is talking about Tyranid mortal wounds. But now they do almost nothing.

4) stave of supremecy. I have noticed a lot more of my opponents armies have been taking psykers. So making them peril more often might be nice. Especially when you consider you can deny their spell but they still suffer the perils.

5) severance bolt. With the removal of bodyguard this now has more use. Also with more psykers being able to get rid of a power is nice. Image a unit of zonathropes lossing the ability to cast smite!!

6) we all know and love the mortal wound liby. But sometimes he whiffs and dies. Armour of sacrifice is +1 armour. Maybe he doesn't die now.

7) assassin's. With the removal of body guard thes folk have become a bit more appealing. Especially if you already have severance bolt. Worth it maybe not but definitely worth a thought.

What are others thought. And feeling. Anything new or intreasting coming out of titan.

1) Dreadnoughts seem really solid, to me, but I don't think Armoured Resilience is super reliable beyond one or two casts, so I wouldn't suggest banking on it. If the Paladins (if you're using them) have already gotten it off then Dreads can try it out for sure. Tide of Shadows plus AoC will definitely help Dreads out. Personally, I'm going to be trying 3 Ven Dreads with Heavy Plasma sitting at the back as Purifying Ritual psychic action monkeys who can be fairly easy to hide, pretty tough in Shadows, and still contribute a little bit at range without being too expensive.

2) Razorbacks seem solid again, though AT is still extremely capable. Land Raiders are better than they were, but as much as I'd love for them to be good, they're still just too pricey for what they can achieve. Two LasBacks would be better AT than a Land Raider; or two AssBacks better than a Crusader, unless you're specifically looking for Terminator transport capabilities - and even then, deep strike/Gate might work better. Still, Raiders might be decent enough to be fun - and at some point I will be fielding them.

3) Refrain is a very interesting idea. Outright denying Mortal Wounds is great, as is counteracting things like Jinx and Doom from Aeldari. Will have to think about this a bit more but a very cool idea!

4) Stave might be a bit too niche/meta dependant. If your area is going particularly heavy on psykers then yeah, it might be worth it. Generally speaking, though, I'm not convinced it would be worth the Relic slot - I suppose against a Tyranid-heavy meta it'll be decent, as they want to cast a lot of powers, but if opponents are running one psyker it's less valuable.

5) Another very interesting idea! Again, will kind of depend on how many psykers you expect to be facing but yeah, knocking out a random power could actually impact some armies a decent amount.

6) Armour of Sacrifice is probably best on the MW Librarian or an Apothecary, depending on what you feel is more important. I'm flip-flopping between the two as I want to keep my 10-man Paladin squad as healthy as possible for as long as possible, and the MW Libby can have the Artisan Nullifier Matrix - but the AoS can definitely work.

7) Again, a good point about the Bodyguard change. I have basically no experience with or even against Assassins, so could be good I suppose

On that note, how are Stormravens doing now? Are they viable at all?

Personally, I'd say not really, no. It's just how lethal the game is, especially for vehicles. Land Raiders have T8 and a 2+ Save, and while still mostly crap Armour of Contempt at least makes it a fair bit tougher.

The Stormraven suffers from a couple of large deficits:

1) T7 and Sv3+ are pants in the current anti-tank environment. Armour of Contempt helps, but vehicles are still facing down AP-3 or -4 so it's still going to be saving on 5s or 6s most of the time (compared to the Land Raider on 4s or 5s respectively). AoC does help, but IMO not enough.

2) -1 to hit helps offset the above a little bit, but the fact that the Stormraven is a big chunky flyer means that it can be targeted very easily compared to many other comparable vehicles, meaning its weaker profile is more noticeable.

3) It's still expensive (like the Land Raider) and while it packs a punch, I'm not sure how effective it would be. 4x Multimelta shots and 2x Lascannon shots is mostly ok AT, but for the price you're paying I'm not sure.

It's definitely more viable than it was, and could definitely be used in a semi-competitive environment, but in a competitive environment it's still going to die to Voidweavers/Dark Lances/[insert current generation AT here] pretty hard.

I agree for its points it is still way too easy to kill. The biggest problem with it is it can be shoot from anywhere as doesn't benefit from obscuring. AoC helps against small arms fire. Otherwise it still needs sanctuary. So if you don't go 1st it's dead. If it had a points drop maybe. Landraiders aren't useful even with AoC and I think they are over priced as well.

In friendly games you can have some fun. Though a lot of people forget a storm raven can carry a Dreadnaught.
