Chapter 920

Right- take II

Rewritten by machine on new technology, Chapter 920 returns to Imperial space with a new history, new back story and new... other stuff. No more lost in the warp, no more illegal cloning by mechanicus, still combined gene- seed though... why? Cos i want to! :P

Also, I have a very sick new story coming up- watch Amicus for details...

Right- Chapter 920:

---------------------------

His body still burning, Veteran Sergeant Corvair stumbled from the burning wreckage. Falling to the ground his huge form landed heavily before he rolled over to put out the flames that licked at his now semi- naked body. Rolling onto his back he rubbed the filthy mud into the remains of his hair to put out the malicious little fires that dwelled there. Looking up with his remaining eye he caught a glimpse of smoke clogged sky before the wing of the thunderhawk landed on top of him.

Like these guys a lot - even if they are mixed geneseed mongrels. ;) :P Corvair is a real character, the antithesis of the noble, shining knight of the stars but no less the Warrior of the Emperor for all that.

Some questions on the new background. If they are 26th founding, then they would have been in existence as a chapter for about two and a half centuries. This is plenty of time for the events you chronicle to have occurred, but 80 years to take down 5 Alpha legionnaires and the corrupted population seems too long for me... maybe 8 years?

Re-entering Imperial spacein M40, the remaining members of the chapter were taken from the hulk by transport ships of the Mordian Iron Guard just before the ship passed Ultima Macharia and the boundaries of Imperial Space.

The M40 bit I guess is a date reference and hangover from the lost in the warp idea rather than a location... if so then it can be deleted as they were founded in late M41. Like the Ultima Macharia reference, very second edition / Aliens. :P

Great stuff, and keep writing.

Whoops yeah- the date got lost in the warp- changing it now.

As for the date- I wanted it to seem like a long time but I guess that 80 years is quite a long time, though I want it to be longer than eight i think. I think I will change it to 20- thats still a whole lot of cultists to kill! :P

Thanks for the input as always.

Hmmm- some excellent ideas there Tubal- I think I will use their number as the chapter symbol- will just print it on their armour on their left shoulder pad. Good suggestion that. ^_^

I do want every marine to be an individual. I would like to have names on all of them but I don't know if I am going to do that though. But, you have given me a nice idea. Seeing as there were only 500 brothers originally, and now down to 50, I could give each of the models random numbers to show where they may have come from in the chapter. For example, Corvair would be numbered between number 16 and number 20 in the chapter. Actually, chapter organisation gurus might be able to help here.

Right- chapter master would be number one but he dead :(

Master Librarian is number two but he also dead :(

Master Chaplain is number three... you get the idea.

Then master techmarine and apothecary plus five company captains (only five companies remember) and five company librarians. Makes 15 in total. Then is it veteran sergeants or techies/ apoths in the hierarchy? If vet serg then Corvair could be number 16 to 20.

Apothecary Alathi is from the third company so i estimate that he would be about number 116/ 117 depending whether techies or apoths come first in the hierarchy.

Brother Miran- a devastator originally, could be 197 onwards from my reconing...

So now they can all walk about with those little yellow tags on like they wore in The Man From U.N.C.L.E. :(

I like this idea. Going to take a while to figure it all out. Of course, any marine inducted after the destruction of the chapter will be numbered 506 and above (the extra five being the chapter master et al.) Mark of respect is to leave the numbers open of all the deceased of the chapter.

And yeah- I took two disadvantages for fluff reasons. I know I didn't have to but I like them and I thought they fitted. Besides, why have tanks when you can have infantry! B)

And thanks to everyone else for your words of support. Nice to see Liber becoming a bit more populated these days. ^_^

++EDIT++ Oooh- thanks SharderBlade- you must have put that up while I was typing. Good metaphorical symbol- nice idea. Might have to incorporate that in somewhere. Thanks! ^_^

i would expect that you could actually number them however you want... they wouldn't have been created for a specific position... how would you know what a guy's going to be good at until he's all ready to be a marine... so the company commanders could be like 138 for all we know. but the original commanders might have been from another chapter, acting as mentors to the new kids... so they would either be the first numbers... or the last depending on how you look at it. so if any of your dudes are survivors from the mentoring chapter you should take that into account... if you're even planning on going that rout at all.

@Utilityzero: Well the original chapter master was an Ultramarine but at the founding of the chapter he would have been number one, then everyone numbered below him according to rank. Then, if they were promoted they would lower their number, but that sounds a bit silly. All the marines would then need to change their numbers to fit him in... Hmmm... Or maybe the power armour has a number- like a limited edition card and stuff. So chapter master is number one and then everyone else has a number below that but they don't change it when they are promoted- this could then show that lowely number 500 could one day become a first company veteran- number 20 something.

(As a side note, the first company really is not very veteran like. Considering it is a new chapter there are very few veterans in the army- the late Chapter Master Augustus and Corvair being among them. Now however, the small band of 50 marines are pretty much considered to be an elite force.)

This could also mean that the original owners of all surviving suits of armour are recorded. Something like:

Suit number 56, previous occupant Brother Sabbatius, Gene- seed not recovered.

Could even have every previous owners marked on the armour somehow, kind of like an eldar spirit stone but for marines instead. Probably a purity seal. Yes!" I like that idea now! Especially as Corvair wears somebody elses armour as his own was destroyed. The purity seal on his shoulder pad and the one on his leg mark the teo previous occupants of his armour (Being so huge, Corvair needed to cannibalise two suits of armour to get the parts he needed.)

Excellent stuff. Thanks for aiding that little brainstorm there! :(

Simply beautifull reading as usual.

I love the image of corvair - Very gritty and very cool.

As for the chaos marines how about making them 8 in number? That would increase the time you have to spend on the planet killing them all.

I have a similar idea with none / very little chapter or identification symbols on the marines but thats because im too lasy to put them on ^_^

I have only one quibble. I love the name Augustus but it gets used a lot so how about Agustulus? I wish I had that name ^_^

Also you should try to get a picture of the chapter planet as that always looks cool to see where they were fighting.

But I really love it ^_^ :( Many Kudos to you

what i meant was, what if the marines were numbered as they popped out of the tubes so to speak, you know, as soon as they were finished with their training, not in order of rank... that would make it easier on you as you could simply give them a number arbitrarily instead of trying to figure out where it would fit in a half-a-chapter's T&E. and since the UM veterans who would lead the chapter at first would be the last ones to join, they would actually have the lowest numbers.

There's plenty of room for symbols, most chapters will have honour badges for different things, the Ultramarines award sharpshooters with a gilded bolt-shell fired by Roboute Guilliman for example. The pillars might be awarded to those most responsible for keeping the chapter going during their troubled times or something.

@Utilityzero- ah ha- got it. I think that might definately be a good idea that one. Will definately have to try and decide where the Ultramarine commander would be numbered though- whether last or first. I will sleep on it.

@Tubal- ah yes indeed- good thinking there- a pillar of servitude. I like that idea. Awarded for upholding the honour of the chapter- hehehe :D

@Ironloki- thanks man. I don't think their planet really exists but I will be on the next shuttle to leave earth to see if i can a picture of one.:P Actually, if you know where I could get some planet pictures then that would be cool. As for Augustus- well, I just thought it would be a suitable Ultramarine name. I can change it if you like though. Maybe not to Agustulas- it took me ages to figure out how to pronounce that name. Don't want to have to resort to Chapter Master... Thingie every time i foget it. ;) :tu:

You guys are all awesome- you are all definately bringing this chapter to life. ^_^

They are very cool. :D

They don't really have a home planet but they do recruit from Kehb, which is an Imperial trading planet- lots of big cities and spaceports bringing in goods and lobbing them back out again to another planet. Any ideas would be cool!

Oh- slightly off my own topic but good choice in Uni course- I do history but wish I did Ancient. James I really doesn't float my boat in any way, shape or form. ^_^ But I do get to do Medieval warfare too, which revolves around swords, bows, trebuchets and lots of burning on stakes. Wonderful stuff! :tu:

Darnit ironloki, I was going to suggest that progg :)

Some planets using random settings:

http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v483/Tubal/planets.jpg

I use the Lunarcell plugin for photoshop (though I use it in PSP :) but there are a few other programs one can use. Fractal Terrains has a LOT more features and actually creates a planet you can rotate and zoom in on as well as export into a number of formats, a spinning GIF for example. It's nowhere near as fast to use as Lunarcell of course :)

[Homer voice] MMMM- planets... [/Homer voice]

Thanks you two. I am getting Photoshop soon so I will be able to use them. Excellent work. I will have to play around with that progrem. Looks like fun.

*I want a spinning planet...*

Yeah im going to do ancient history again next year and medieval history you Im going to get the best of both worlds (Although European history is good even for a general overview)

Anyway back on topic :D . One thing you could do is perhaps add one of those marine templates to colour in for your chapter however your writing has a livid feel to it which stimulates the mind in what pictures cant ^_^

Cant wait to read your next story or additional fluff :tu:

@Ironloki- If you get medieval history then try and get heresy or the 100 years war. Both are pretty good.

With regards to the marine template, do you know where to get it as I seem to have lost it from my computer when I cleaned it up. I know it won't be of much use seeing as they are predominantly grey but I can then adapt it in Photoshop with chapter iconography (numbers, pillars of honour, personalised armour plates etc.)

Oh- next story coming up is the missile mad Brother Miran and the plights of Brother Briel and Brother Solomon "the Silent". This next story is taking a while because I have two essays to do (The Union of England and Scotland and social deviance of the peasantry in the Languedoc in the 12th century :tu: ) but I hope to have it up by thursday or friday. I hope to make Miran into a bit of a character in his own right. I want to make him the baddest good guy around. Mean but with a good heart. Awwww! He he he! :D

Cheers all- chapter coming along smoothly. Have now finished building Corvair, Alathi, Aneus, Miran, Humon and two as yet unnamed brothers. Am building Briel and Solomon next. ^_^ Pictures also by the end of the week.

Congratulations. I like this chapter ^_^ In part is similar to what I want to do with my own chapter. The difference being that they will have reconvered since that period (M39) but I am really enjoying this fluff, even if some stuff like the captain of the company being a jackass might be too extreme for my taste. Kudos to you. Well done ^_^

Regards,

Xavi
