Greetings Brother Wolves!

I am back from the Hunt and, by Russ' ever full keg, I bring tales of glorious battle!

I have been out in the void of space, searching for a foe that would be worthy of dying by my blade and the runes spoke of a great green tide. The foul Xenos known as Orks...

I played a game last friday against my friend's new Orks army (Death Skullz list from the CA article). He is pretty new to the hobby but he already has painted a full 1800 pts army in the same time it took me to motivate myself to do a few bases and the assault cannon arm of my dreadnought. We went to on of the local GW (there are two in the Ottawa region) and set ourselves for a nice little game of 40K. That game offered me my first chance at trying my new Assault Cannon Frenzy list.

The game was set at 1750 and the mission randomly turned out to be a gamma level Take and Hold.

He had:

Warboss in mega armor with kustom shoota, mega-boosta big horns, boss pole... the whole shabang

5 Nobs retinue with 2 in mega armor and 3 in 'eavy armor with 'uge choppas

The retinue was in a truck with a rokit launcha

10 Lootas w./Mekboy (with force field) and grots (2 heavy bolters & 2 missile launchers)

10 Lootas w./Mekboy (with force field) and grots (2 lascannons & 2 missile launchers)

20 slugga boyz (2 burna boyz)

10 Grot screen

5 bikes

1 buggy with twin-linked rokit launcha

Killa kan w./scorcha

3 lobbas battery

Looted Leman Russ

I had:

Wolf Priest (balms&potions, wolf pelt)

Rune Priest (frost axe, terminator armor, wolf pelt)

Venerable dreadnought (ass.can., dread ccw, x-tra armor, smoke)

Dread (ass.can., dread ccw, x-tra armor, smoke)

Wolf terminator retinue (7 terminators, 2 twin lightning, 3 ass.can., 2 power fist/storm bolters)

Rune terminator retinue (5 terminatrors, 2 twin lightning, 2 ass.can, 1 power fist/storm bolter)

10 Grey Hunter (power weapon, power fist, melta gun, bolter&ccw)

Rhino (x-tra armor, smoke)

10 Blood Claws (2 power fists)

Vindicator (smoke)

The table we played on was full of ruins and vegetation so we decided we'd keep it that way. In retrospect, the table was a bit more to his advantage as I had more medium ranged firepower than he did and it allowed him to begin his advance unmolested.

He almost deployed his force in the best way he could, considering the restrictions that the terrain imposed. He put his lascannon lootas on the right side of his zone (from my point of view) next to some vegetation. He didn't really need cover with the mekboy around. This gave him a pretty open view on half the table. His bikes were deployed right behind them so they could zoom up the right flank. His Leman Russ was covered with some vegetation but still had a relatively clear shot at the objective. Next to it, he put his big mob of sluggas and the Kan. They were pretty much aligned straight in front of the objective and were ready to rush for it and hold it against whatever I would send. He put his buggy between the Leman Russ and the sluggas, behind a screen of Grots and right in front of my dreads. I think that rokit launcha boy had an itchy trigger finger. The other lootas and the lobbas were on the left. The heavy bolter lootas were placed in front of some industrial pipes and vent and the lobbas were behind. His placement of the heavy bolter lootas was his only big mistake as they didn't have a shot a much of my troops.

I placed my vindicator behind some wall so I could zoom in in the next few turns and blast those lasccannon totting lootas as fast as I could. Not to far from it to the left I placed my Grey hunters right behind their rhino. They were covered by the tank and the wall so I was pretty sure they safe. The dreads were placed to cover both sides of the rhino. The Rune terminator pack was left of the rhino, with some ruins between them. I wanted to keep them close so I could cast storm caller on any vehicle that would need extra protection. The Wolf terminators were placed dead center of the board and would go straight for the objective with the Blood Claws. The young pups were deployed left of the Wolf termies behind some ruins.

With everything in place, we rolled for first turn. I got a 5 and he got a... 3.

I decided to go first.

Turn 1 to come...

Turn 1

I began by embarking my Grey hunters in the rhino and zoomed them 12" towards the side of the ruins where the objective was. I popped some smoke so I wouldn't lose them in the first turn. The blood claws moved out from behind the ruins and towards the center of my deployment zone to get closer to the objective. The Wolf termies walked up the center to get closer to the objective. At this rate, I would be on it by next turn. The Rune termies walked up behind the rhino, ready to move up next turn and cover that side of the large center ruins. Both dreads moved up to get the lascannon lootas in sight. The vindicator moved 12" behind more cover and popped smoke. It would be ready to fire next turn.

I started the shooting phase by having both dreads fire everything at the lascannon lootas. After the smoke cleared, I could see one dead ork behind a shimmering wall of blue energy. The rest of my troops had nothing in range so that pretty much ended my first turn.

He began by moving his sluggas and Kan right up the center. They were looking pretty dedicated to getting that objective. The truck with his warboss and retinue zoomed up towards my rhino and they disembarked, power claws clanking with loud metalic noises in a background of steam and hydrolic pipes. The bastard was going to assault my rhino! The bikes moved up the extreme right of the table and finished right next to my vindicator. The buggy moved up a bit to try and get a open shot at my dreads. The rest of his boyz remained pretty static as he wanted to maximise his shooting.

He did have a lot of fire power but they were not very effective. The lobbas got one blood claw and the Leman Russ tried to shoot the dreads, to no avail. The heavy bolter lootas shot on claw down and the lascannon lootas shot everything they had at my ven dread but everything missed. The buggy finally shot his rokit at the ven dread but it missed too.

The assault phase was pretty nasty. He assaulted my rhino with his warboss and retinue and wrecked it. I had to make an emergency disembarkment and rolled 9 wounds in total. I rolled for my armor saves... 8 saves! I only lost one Grey Hunter! Now they would be entangled though... not a good thing when you hve a bunch of angry nobs and a warboss coming at you.

Unbeknownst to us, this rhino wreck would win me the game. The wreck was blocking the entrance of the ruins so that he could only bring his boyz in one or two at a time. This is the only reason my Hunters held them for as long as they did.

Turn 2 coming soon...

Turn 2

Turn 2 began with a mix of anger and dread. I was pissed off at not having seen the warboss coming to blow my rhino to bits and I was afraid of what the same warboss would do to my troops when his turn would come.

I moved my Blood Claws and Wolf terminators closer to the center ruins. With good difficult terrain rolls, I managed to get a few guys in. On the right of the board, the vindicator wearily backed away from the bikes and leveled its demolisher cannon. The bikes forgot to fire when they had a chance, I would not make the same mistake. Both dreads moved up a bit so they could position themselves to have a clearer shot at the lascannon lootas. The Rune terminators moved closer to the dreads but stayed close enough to the Grey Hunters so I could cast storm caller on them. They would need it against the warboss' retinue.

The shooting phase was pretty average. Both dreads fired again at the lootas on the right and got a few more down. That damned Kustom Force field was paying off though. I have rarely seen that many 5+ saves. That guy would be dangerous with a deathwing army. Next, my vindicator shot at the bikes. A hit! roll to wounds... 1 wound. I got 3 under the template and I still manage not to kill 2 of them. Oh well. The rune priest tried to cast stormcaller and missed. I rolled a 10.

I had nothing in assault range so my turn ended.

The Orks seemed to be bolstered by my complete failure to kill them. The Kan took the lead and closed up on the center ruins, followed closely by the slugga boyz. The heavy bolter lootas, now without a target moved up to eventualy join the sluggas in the center. The buggy and truck positioned themselves to get another shot at my dreads. On the right side, the bikes moved around the corner of the ruins they hid behind and moved to get a shot at my Rune terminators, right past my vindicator.

This shooting phase was his most devastating. His lascannon lootas, his Leman Russ, his buggy and his truck all fired at my venerable dread. He was stunned 3 times and then immobilized. I thought about having him reroll it but I figured I should not push my luck. I still had some smoke to protect him next turn. The bikes and lobbas both fired at the Rune terminators and took a couple down. It's a sad thing to see 1s come up on 2+ saves. Finally, his warboss assaulted my Grey Hunters. The only models that could fit in between my troops and the rhino wreck was the warboss and one mega armored nob. He had another nob close enought to be in support. I got to attack first and caused a wond on the warboss and one wound on the nob. The return attacks were afr more effective. Of the 9 Hunters I had at the beggining of the assault, 3 were left at the end. My power fist Hunter missed both of his attacks, astounded at the savagery of the Greenskins. Still, my valiant Grey Hunters held their position and readied themselves to join the All-Father at his Feast. this ended the orks turn

Turn 3 soon to come...

Keep it comin'!

Sounds cool and the list is very interesting.

Hope you kick some butt, I've been getting headaches from a local speed freek and I'd like to see some orks feel the pain of SWs.

To frostwolf-I like what I see(or read as the case may be). Although it seems like you borrowed my dice for this battle.

Valincius, how do you turn a word document into a forum post?, because I have a little story I'd like to show off.

Turn 3

Turn 3 was a breaking point in the game. I started off by making difficult terrain rolls for both my Blood Claws and the Wolf termies so they could enter the center ruins where the objective, the remaining Grey Hunters and the warboss retinue were. Both came out as 6s. I advanced the Claws directly towards the Kan. He shall not pass! The Wolf Priest moved towards the warboss and his retinue to give some support to the already thinning Grey Hunters. The Vindicator moved away from the bikes and zoomed past the Ven dread. More to the right, the dread moved back towards the bike and unleashed his assault cannon, striding purposefuly towards them with the intention of ripping the to shreds. The Rune Priest and his retinue moved past the immobilised Venerable dread and got ready to assault a Grot screen (yes, I have forgotten about them... tells you how big a part they had played so far). The Ven dread popped his smoke to get a little respite from all the rokits and lascannon shots that were coming his way. The dread took aim at the bikes, killed one and wounded the Nob. I tried to cast stormcaller on the Rune priest and his retinue but the warp was disturbed by all that Waaagh energy and the Rune Priest was unable to bend it to his will. The assault phase went almost perfectly. The dread ran into the bikes, the Rune Priest into the grots, the Wolf Priest into the warboss and the Claws into the Kan. Two more bikes died to the onslaught of the the dread. They could do nothing to stop him but they held firm. The grots managed to kill one terminator (never underestimate a scared grot) and held even though the Rune Priest and his retinue killed all but three of them. The Grey Hunters managed to give the warboss another wound before having two more of them squished by his power claw. The Wolf Priest took care of the second mega armored nob and the rest of the retinue were too far away to engage into combat. Finally, the Blood Claws took a casualty from the Kan before ripping open it's power core with their power fists. The Kan exploded in a huge conflagration, leaving four burnt ork bodies on the ground and a few surprised Blood Claws with singed eyebrows. The Claws quickly regained their composure and leaped into the sluggas that were following the Killa Kan.

The Orks had been badly hurt but they would not let go. The buggy and truck continued their harrassment manouvers around the Ven dread but suddenly turned to face the Vindicator. They might not know much but they know about big guns... and it can't get much bigger than a demolisher cannon. The Grot, sluggas and bike were stuck in close combat so they kept doing what they had to do... try to survive. The heavy bolter lootas, seeing they had no more 'umies to shoot at closed in to join the sluggas. They wouldn't let those boyz get all the loot! The Leman Russ fired but missed his target. The lascannon lootas, truck an buggy were a bit more efficient, hitting a weak spot in the Vindicator's ammo storage and blowing it sky high. Near the center ruins, the Wolf Priest finaly met the warboss in combat and ended the wretched thing's life as his retinue casually cut down some of the ork followers. The Rune Priest, on his part, finished of what was left of the grots and their slaver and consolidated towards the sluggas. The Orks didn't quite notice since they had their hands full with a pack of frenzied Blood Claws. The heavy bolter lootas, who were rapidly closing up on the marines made a final dash to join the combat. After a bloody melee, 5 young Wolves had died but they had taken 8 foul smelling beasts with them. By some insane courage (or sheer stupidity), the orks held.

Turn 4, 5 and 6 to come tomorrow...

or tonight...

Turn 4

Turn 4 could have went bad if the sluggas and lootas had succeded in destroying the Claws. The Rune Priest and his retinue closed up on the sluggas from behind. The rest of my army was either destroyed or engaged in combat... ok, most of it was in combat. The Wolf Priest and his retinue were occupied with the rest of the Nobs, the dread was stuck with some bikes and the Blood Claws were busy with some very agitated Orks. The shooting phase went pretty quick as I had almost nothing to shoot at and I failed my Stormcaller... again. Those Orks were really messing up the flows and eddies of the Warp. The Ven dread did have a few things to say about being immobilised, though. He opened fire on those pesky lascannon lootas and droped a few more of them. Slowly but surely, the constant firepower was taking its toll. The Rune Priest assaulted the sluggas and started ripping them appart. The Claws, bolstered by their sudden reinforcements, turned on the lootas to fend them off. In total, only one Claw fell while half the lootas and the rest of the sluggas died. The lootas, seeing they would have to work more than they expected for their loot and suddenly losing faith in their blue magical warpaints, turned and fled with the Rune Priest close on their heels. The dread finaly destroyed the rest of the bikers and started to walk back towards the center, behind some ruins. In the center of the table, the Wolf Priest and his retinue finished off the Nob bodyguards and secured the objective.

At this point, the Orks started falling appart. The heavy bolter lootas were running for their lives, the lascannon were down to 3, including the mekboy, and the truck an buggy were in a definite bad position with 2 dreads in their vincinity and a load of terminators closing back on them. The Ork vehicles and the lascannon lootas tried to finish off the venerable dreadnought but the destruction of the rest of their lads was too much for them and they all missed. The lobbas didn't do much better. There were no more boyz left to make an assault anywhere and thus the turn ended.

Turn 5

At this point, it became a simple matter of mopping up the ork survivors. The dread moved into an opening to get a shot at the lascannon lootas and the Blood Claws moved back into the center ruins to lick their wounds. The Rune Priest, intent on finishing off the heavy bolter lootas, moved closer to them and got ready to pounce once more. In the center, the Wolf Priest's retinue streched out of the ruins to get a shot at the truck. Both dreads opened fire on the remaining lascannon lootas. The three poor little orks got torn to pieces by a torrent of hot lead. The Wolf terminators, targeters locked on the buggy, let their assault cannons rip and destroyed the light machine with minimal ammunition. The Rune Priest moved in for the kill and finished off the last lootas. The only orks left were driving a truck and crewing a Leman Russ.... plus a lobba battery that had given up on the battle.

The Orks in the truck and Leman Russ tried to destroy a dread but to no avail. The loobas did try to take down a few terminators but the ancient suits proved too much for their puny shells.

Turn 6

At this point, I had 3 targets left and one of them I could not see nor reach. The Wolf terminators opened fire on the truck and destroyed it while the dreads tried to take down the Leman Russ. Ironically, it seemed as if the Wolves could not bring themselves to destroy a machine that bore the name of their Primarch, even though it had been corrupted by Xenos.

The game ended with my Wolves firmly holding the objective. The only orks that survived were in the Leman Russ. Oh, there were lobbas too but they don't really count do they? ;)

Well, that's it. It was a nice game that could have gone both ways on turn 3. Nice to see that my friend is improving his game. I'll have to be a lot more careful in our next match!

Hope you liked it! There will be another report coming up soon. Be warned that it will be a lot better than this! I think that Squirrelking and I will make the WD boys jealous with our next one!
