Emperor's Teeth, I don't mean to question His Angels of Death on how to properly wage war about His Foes but was it quite necessary to ignite the entire world?!?! :o

...You guys haven't been hanging out with a Chapter called the Conflagrators by any chance have you?

Hey guys,

From time to time I manage to reignite this thread for a few short minutes, but today I've received an excellent PM from Matt Sweitzer, the owner of POP Goes the Monkey on Shapeways. After we threw a few emails around, he contacted me to say that the first 3D-printed Castigator shoulder pads have been designed!

They're here: LINK.

He did my Ruminators Chapter pads. Good quality stuff. I believe there is a new resin option as well beyond just the frosted stuff (which was the only option when I had mine done).

Howdy folks,

Thought I'd share some more artwork I've recently been working on...think you might like it! Keep in mind, these are just works in progress. Trying to make this more in line with some of the newer art style in the Forge World books.

Here are some more goodies for the Castigators. Enjoy!

Castigators Veteran Marine, Honoured 1st Company, wearing one of their few suits of Terminator Armour Note: Personal heraldry applied to power fist and Chapter honours applied to right greave (lower leg). Also, note Raptor Imperialis icon on livery shield. This is a special honour, as it is the same icon used by the Castigators' forebears, the Black Consuls, and is only awarded to those who have shown exceptional bravery, dedication and single-mindedness in prosecuting their duties as a Castigators Space Marine.

Truly magnificent Algrim! I especially love the personal heraldries and the little honorifics you've added to the inside paulderon on the terminator and the veteran. I don't have anything to criticize that wouldn't be nitpicking, but I think they're worth mentioning regardless.

The Raptor Imperialis on the terminator's shield is a little small.

The Chaplain is rough around the edges between the skull of his helmet and the iron halo. I think the seals would look better if they were placed higher on the pauldrons as they are on the terminator.

I don't "get" the veteran marine's personal heraldry. It looks like filigree.

This is one I forgot to mention with the first batch as well, the quality of the company heraldry varies from marine to marine. It's excellent on:

1. "Castigators Tactical Marine - 5th Co., 4th Tactical Squad (Mk VII 'Aquila' Pattern Power Armour)"

2. "Castigators Deathwatch Veteran (4th Co.) (Mk III 'Iron' Pattern/Mk VII mixed) Note: Deathwatch veterans are allowed to maintain the iconography and armour (specifically the left shoulder pauldron and left arm) to easily identify themselves as experts in slaying xenos."

3. "Castigators Tactical Marine - 4th Co., 3rd Tactical Squad (Mk VI 'Corvus' Pattern Power Armour)"

but on the others it's really rough.

Looking at Algrim's marines, I've noticed something about the Castigator's heraldry that I hadn't really thought about before, that being, I think the heraldry looks significantly better "backwards" as it is on the marines with the heraldry on their right pad or the apothecary who has it reversed. I know that this is going against almost a decade's worth of what Mol and others have done with the Chapter, and Mol's already gone and commissioned shoulder pads as is, but I think it's something to consider all the same.

Woah!

I've been busy with work (this time of year is often the busiest) but coming back to see these has been awesome. I'm really gratified to see that the Castigators have inspired you to the point of creating these concepts. I think they help to bring the (rather aging) Castigators' designs into the new Forgeworld design era.

I particularly like how you've used some of the classic images Tiberius and I created (the one of the unfurled lash, for example, on the Mk7 Marine's bolter) - very cool indeed! I notice also the Veteran based heavily on Colrouphobic's previous design.

I truly hope that you'll continue creating more! I'm not sure if I sent you the mock-up of the "IA: Castigator" mega-file, but I did go through and print screen some spreads from Forgeworld books that I would like to emulate.

Some thoughts:

- The Castigators seem to vary wildly in shade in different depictions, I think in part because they were originally based on the quite purple-y scab red. For me, I think this is the classic depiction. What would the Castigators look like if they went a little redder?

- I like your depiction of the Castigators' shoulder pauldron. I think its important that the point of the elbow is in the centre of the pad. On some of your Marines the chapter symbol isn't centred. I also think that on a couple of them, the chapter symbol is a little low?

- Your depictions, I think, show how the blue used in company designations doesn't really work. I think it might simply be better if they were simply white-and-red. Looking at the Mk6 Marine, I wonder if the blue section would have a white rim?

- The Deathwatch veteran makes me wonder whether the Deathwatch pad should be reverted to the other pad, allowing the Chapter symbol to regain prominence.

- The Terminator looks ace - the only thought being that the skull on his kneepad could perhaps be better being more gothic, and less "Punisher"-esque?

- I'm a little unsure about the decorative filigree on the second veteran - I think you've done good things with the thorn-wreath, but the designs on the leg look a little like the Emperor's Children and the like.

- The Apothecary and Techmarine are both awesome. I wonder for the apothecary's knee whether a solid white cog with a red chapter symbol within might be good?

- The Chaplain is awesome - I love the design on the breastplate - is that something you did yourself or is it from a FW book? I do think a more traditional skullfaced helm would be good.

I would absolutely love to see whatever else you come up with - you're really helping me to reconnect with the Castigators' aesthetic. It's really brilliant stuff.

Hello Commisar Molotov!

Great to hear from you! I appreciate your comments and suggestions, and have taken them under advisement. I updated a lot of the original artwork and posted them here in my gallery: http://www.bolterandchainsword.com/gallery/album/12470-castigators/

Please peruse them at your leisure. If there is anything else you can think of (comments, concerns, requests, ect.) Feel free to drop by and leave me a message! BTW, just so you know, your Chapter is over here, if you need a reference to use for your book that you are trying to work on still:  http://wh40kfanon.wikia.com/wiki/Castigators

If you still would like to collaborate, just let me know. I would be more than happy to assist you! Glad you liked the artwork as much as I enjoyed creating it!

Ave Imperator!

Looking at the pictures in Algrim's gallery verses the ones in this thread, I have to disagree with you Mol. I think the Company Heraldry looks significantly better in Blue where it's a complementary color as opposed to red where it disappears. And I think the Deathwatch marine looks better with the big silver pad and arm. Any thoughts on what looks better between the heraldry with the whip striking forwards (i.e. Algrim's Apothecary and Chaplain) as opposed to backwards as it is on most of what's been painted before and the pads you've commissioned?

Old Castigators stalwart Captain Tiberius has posted this picture, which I thought was pretty cool:

I have always been a fan of the Castigators going back to the days of their first appearance here on the B&C so giving this a bump so our newer members can read an excellent IA.  I said it many years ago and I will say it again....still think these guys sound more like a successor of Dorn and the only reason I have not made a battle-force of my own is because of my own bias, I simply CANNOT make any chapter that bears Robutes geneseed, personal preference/hatred of him lore wise....lol Cheers to the Commissar!

So another update:

Plokoone has been making waves on the B+C with his various 3D designs for Chapters, and he very graciously agreed to design a set of shoulder pads for the Castigators:

710x528_17830747_10472048_1487991227.jpg

You can find these here.

These certainly look very cool, and provide modellers with a choice of manufacturers.

Also, the ever industrious Deathspectersgt7 has been posting pictures of Castigators in his thread here:

It's awesome to see some Castigators models taking shape, and now I'm going to have to try to catch up!

Thanks for the post - I do always really appreciate it when people remember the Castigators. I chose the Ultramarines gene-seed for many reason - in part, to retaliate against those who were hating Roboute for little reason; but also to show the divergence and variety among Marines of the Ultramarine line. I didn't want the Castigators to fall into clich Edited by Commissar Molotov

Plokoone does seem to be the apple of the eye of the community right now. Here's hoping he doesn't burn out after all this activity. That said, actual Castigator shoulder pads kinda feels like they need to be elevated from fanon to canon now (if anyone writing for GW is reading this...).

What other thing to say than: Inspiring!

You're dedication is astonishing. How long have you been working on them? Couple of years, right?

And the support you've received is great!

Well done to everyone! Remarkable project. Hope that one day the Castigators will be made canon!

Hi all,

The Castigators, I think, are showing their age and I'm awaiting the 8th Edition background to see how they will fare through the Gathering Storm and the Indomitus Crusade. It does put me somewhat in a quandary as I'm not sure how much to update the Castigators' fluff.

I'm also unsure how the Castigators will approach the new Primaris Marines, representing as they do the peak of trans-human capability. Will the Chapter as a whole be upgraded? Will there be an additional company (or companies) of Primaris Marines, or will they be reinforcing each of the companies?

Is it possible that Primaris reinforcements sent by Guilliman would include a psyker Librarian - the Castigators' first for many millennia?

You could always changed them to be sons of Dorn and then I would be obliged to paint them....lol. Would it be within the Castigators to have an internal conflict/small scale civil war with the arrival of the Primaris and a few Librarians.......could this be a trigger that leads to either a split or a purge?
