Hey guys,

First off let me say it is so nice to see this place again ^_^

So after seeing Aerion's primarch pics over on Warseer I was inspired to try some of my own. Hope you ;like them...

Rogal Dorn - The Emperor's Champion

Vulkan - the Hammer of the Emperor

Since the good ole' B&C is back I might just have to draw up something special for them. ;)

Moogoo - What can I say Dorn is a B.A. (not to be confused with blood angels...)

Aerion - Down boy :P I just got my digital painting book in the mail today so give me a bit to figure out what the heck I'm doing (I know evil computers - boo! hiss! I'd use paint but the brush doesn't have a command Z function :P)

Firehawk - It's cool with me as long as you promise to post the pics so I can see them.

Asmodai - Thanks! Keep an eye out for more in the future. :D

  • 2 weeks later...

The Vulkan drawing is great - it has a lovely flowing motion to it that really brings out the action - it's not as static as GW's pics always seem to be, less of a formal portrait style, and is all the better for it. It honestly looks as if he's about to hammer some fool into the ground; I can hear it now.....

"Yeah? You want some?"

Very akin to Mark Gibbon's style, which i must say i dont like, but they are very well done. Vulkan could do with a little rendering and shading, the sheer level of detail you've invested in the line drawing is a little in your face. That in your face quality is also the downside of the dorn picture with the Gibbon's trademark of making multiple bold statements which, to my eyes cancel each other out and make it a bit strenuous to look at. But it goes practically without saying that these are gorgeous works if simply for your skill at creating them.

Did you see Vulcan as a south pacific tribesman or was it easier to draw then an African style tribesman since i have always felt the salamander's fluff gave a more south pacific feel then African.

They both look great i saw dorn on warseer and i love your vision of Vulcan great work.

Thanks for the comments guys...

Vulkans head could do with some work, but you draw better power armour then most of GW's artists
Yeah the head didn't turn out quite like I planned it, but close.

Thanks! I was really happy with the motion on this. Just wish I had more room on the paper when I was doing this. It would have helped his face some to spread his arms abit.

It's cool with me if you don't care for his art, however I'm a huge fan so I'm glad it shows. (I also like John Blanche's stuff... but we won't go into that here.)

I agree on the shading, I meant to color it which is why it is cleaner than the Dorn picture. However the Wife has had my Mac tied up for awhile, so it has been put on the backburner for the moment. Hopefully the color will help focus the image. <_<

I'm sorry they weren't quite your style, but I am happy you chose to post your comments. They were very helpful. :P

Well from the fluff I've read Vulkan had blue-ish black skin. Combining this with the Salamanders habit of ritually branding themselves, I have always been reminded of pictures I have seen of African tribal branding. So the two images sort-of stuck in my head. Never saw them as South Pacific islanders, but I can see why you might connect them.

Weird, the two pics look like they was made by different artist, the difference is huge... I like vulcan, he looks really nice, dorn isn't so hot imo.

Well there are 2 reasons for this disparity. First is image size, The dorn image is roughly 3.5" x 4.5" or so, while the Vulkan image is roughly double that size. Second, the Vulkan image was meant to be eventually colored, so I photocopied the pencils, then inked the lines for better scanning. The Dorn image was just scanned as it was.

Personally I prefer the Dorn image, but then I've always prefered sketches to finished images.

Thanks again for your comments guys they are a big help! :)

Ok just for you Molotov, here are a few more pieces...

Here's one I don't think I've posted before. Minotaurs are B.A. by the way. <_<

Not sure if I posted this one before either. Did this after reading SCC's excellent IA.

This one is a year or so old, but I still like the pose.

Oh my dear goodness. ^_^

Tiberius, these are be-a-u-tiful!

I must ask, are you as good at sculpting and painting as you are at drawing? I just might have to go and paint a few marines right away!

This is extremely inspirational, even for a guy who has trouble drawing stick people...

I love your style, its very inspiring

*Finds a bunch of old school papers and starts doodling*

It makes me happy that I can inspire others to draw more the way I was inspired by other talented artists.

All I need you to do now is doodle up a Blood raven and I shall be happy!

Not sure I'd ever draw a Blood Raven, I just don't care for them. But you never know...

I must ask, are you as good at sculpting and painting as you are at drawing?

Actually I've never tried sculpture so I don't know, but my painting is average (on minis) and terrible on canvas.

Thanks again for the comments guys!
