An amazing dread from france 2006

This is why Im not a fan of a lot of the GD stuff from the continent; it just doesn't seem like GW. It really does feel like a lot of the painters just wish GW were producing minis for random Anime shows or other mini companies(Ill scream if I see one more GW model painted in the same style as the Rackham minis, all NMM and blending but no soul).

Have you seen some of the newer Rackham painted miniatures? Or are you basing your definition of 'Rackham style' on how people who don't work for Rackham paint their miniatures. Because from what I see the Rackham style consists of textures and not smooth blending. The NMM part is true but GW painter have used NMM for a long time (probably longer than Rackham even exists) just not on every miniature. And where in the GW paint jobs do you see soul. These miniatures are painted for packaging and pictures. With enough contrast to work on the box. I know that it's your opinion but it looks like a generalisation in my opinion.

Hold on there, bucko, we were talking about Games Day entries, no? So where does how GW paint their boxart minis come into things?

I base my opinion of Rackham models on the Rackham online store, which is full of technically excellent but singularly dull models which use excessive NMM and blended armour to hide a lack of detail on the models. Then again, Im not one of those wierdos who keeps complaining about GW putting too much "bling"(ie, detail) on their new models, so what do I know

Here: You compare Golden Daemon miniatures with Rackham boxart/blister card miniatures ("I'll scream if..."). I just got distracted by your comparison.

"excessive NMM": Calling that exessive somehow doesn't work. They chose to use no metallic paints for their boxart at a time when everyone used metallic paints. What should they do after they have applied the primer to the metal parts?

"lack of detail": I wouldn't say that Rackham miniatures lack detail. If you really want to see miniatures that don't have "bling" try looking for hasslefree/spyglass miniatures. And yes I am probably one of thes wierdos who at some point just don't want to see a minimum of one skull per miniature and details that are disproportional large/thick.

By the way: The model's weathering and lighting seems to be inspired by military modeling. I like the model expecially because it's straining the GW design parameters. The design of the hand doesn't fit exactly (too roundish) but the other stuff works (even if he had to butcher some model kits).

I don't think we should discuss that here much longer.Let's leave it at thisas long as we are still nice to each other ^_^ . Our preferences (regarding miniatures) are different. It could get off topic very fast.

firestorm do you have a link to a pic of the new ven. dread? (although i may be dissappointed to see it)

Well, I'm not Firestorm but I'll risk taking the initiative of posting some pics in his stead. :P

Most obvious source of inspiration, an Ultramarine Dread:

Most, if not all, of these pictures can be found in much better detail within The Art of the Horus Heresy, vol. I: Visions of War published by the Black Library.

@Tubal: Doh! My bad, it all makes sense now...

@Usernames are for smelly crustaceans: From the comments I seen so far on other forums, opinions are mixed. While I personally hate it (waaay too many cheesy details and the only thing it's missing are a pair of furry (scatter) dice), I seen a lot of people liking it.

when i first saw this, my initial thought was "Ancient technology" because it looks VERY techie, i like it a lot.

then i saw that people were ripping it a new arse hole, and i was confused as to why.

i am no expert on the fluff, but didnt something happen that made the index astartes is it, or adeptus mechanicus??? become afraid of technology, which is why they bless the ancient tech such as plasma guns before each battle, and use "new" tech stuff that is decidedly less high tech than the older stuff???

your pics of cards from GW just show that the ancient dredds looked a lot, if not exactly like the model in question. which discounts what a lot of people are saying about how it doesnt fit in with 40K at all... so to summ it up, it fits, and is super super clean. 1million points for the bad-ass that made it.

In regards to the dred from France's GD show, its great workmanship.

I really love the paint and attention to details.

Having said that ,I think its too..."leggy".

I guess I like my dreds stockier, squat, not sure what the right term is.

I just don't care for the style.

Threadromancy! bleagh, just kidding with ya, as stated before i also like this thing, although i do agree with the "it looks like a transformer" remarks, at least it doesnt look like a box with stubby little cork legs. :P just my opinion though.

I didn't like it at first, but the more I looked at it the more it grew on me.

However, the limp-wristed, sausage-fingered hand should DEFINITELY be replaced - it seems something more like an Eldar walker would have.
