Battlefleet Gothic

I feel awkward using my IH fleet, because, according to fluff I have a company of Marines maximum, yet, that means I have one Strike Cruiser and a whole lot of escorts. Fun to use, but has certain drawbacks.

You could always say the rest of the Battle Brothers are fighting in a different Sector... or even being held in reserve ready to Land once you've cleared an LZ...

No, no, the single Strike Cruiser is fielded because, according to fluff, all I'm supposed to have is a company. A Strike Cruiser carries 100 Marines, so technically I shouldn't have anything else (like a Battle Barge). I make up for it with a Battlecruiser though.

However, I did have an incredibly fun time playing my escort-exclusive fleet against a Ramship-exclusive fleet. We inconclusively chased each other around in circles...

Even though your Iron Hands represent a single Clan Company, they can be part of a much larger invasion force - i.e. like the invasion of the Contqual Sector. Although Clan Companies will occasionally fight, the Clan Council ensures that they fight a unified whole when needed.

Thanks for the info, I was afraid I'd have to sratchbuild the frigate. And anyone who's seen ==My== modelling skills knows that would be a bad idea

Now I'm really tempted to start BFG, it's so much cheaper than a 40k army :D

Another question, what do you guys use for terrain?

There's also a Grey Knight Strike Cruiser, I believe...

For terrain, I have a space station made of myriad parts and bits of sprue. I didn't want to, but I ended up gluing a couple of ships to it, for effect. I also have a couple of weapon platforms (kind of big), and the rest of my terrain is made up of broken pieces of foam, mounted on small flying bases.

Ok thanks for all the positive replies. I took the time to download all the pdfs from the BFG/Specialist games site and will read through over the next few days.

Is there a Fleet list/Codex as such for Adeptus Astartes Fleets or have I just missed it? Someone I know mentioned it had been taked down for some reason and was no longer available.

There are actually three different fleet lists (Space Marine, Armageddon, and Bakka) that regularly feature Space Marine ships. At the Dallas (Texas, US) Grand Tournament a few years ago, I took my fleet in to fight and ended up playing exclusively against other Imperial vessels. The only one which differed was an Armageddon Battlefleet that consisted of several Imperial Navy ships led by a Space Marine Battle Barge.

I was thinking of putting together an Armageddon fleet because I like some of the Space Marine ships; that, and the original Navy fleet as it appears in the BFG rulebook does not include the vessels from the Voss shipyards such as the Apocalypse Battleship, Endeavour Cruiser, and Falchion Escort

BFG is quite enjoyable. I modelled my fleet loosely on my take of a crusade fleet, two Black Templar barges with about 20 escorts, seven Imperial Navy cruisers of various classes and their attending escorts and even an Inquisitorial presence consisting of an =I= black ship and three Grey Knight strike cruisers. I plan on adding in a few BT strike cruisers and a strike cruiser and a few escorts for both the Blood Angels and Space Wolves to the fleet. These additions will tie into the crusade a few scattered 40K models that I have tucked away on a shelf. As stated earlier, BFG gives us the opportunity to fight naval engagements and script in 40K games representing boarding actions and planetary assaults, adding even more atmosphere and interest to 40K.

Another question, what do you guys use for terrain?

Since I'm cheap, if I find a broken chunk of asphalt that looks suitable, I've created an instant asteroid field. Otherwise it's the standard foam on a stick.

My Ultramarine fleet is hovering at the 2500 pt mark right now, Imperials at 3000+ I think. It is a wonderful game to tie in with 40k. Most others have already said what I would say, so I suppose I'm done!

@Penitent Dreadnought: You could have your single IH strike cruiser, and also have other capital ships from different chapters that you like.

*mutters* I had all of my PA-approriate fleet pictures on the old B&C... *too lazy to re-upload* B)

What, those weaklings? I'd rather have Bannus' Clanners with me. They're not as strong as my own, but at least I trust Kaargul.

Ahoj!

Terrain - I use what came in the box (excellent value for US buyers), plus cotton wool sprayed with some smelly primer, stuck to 25mm round bases. I also rip up paper tissues to use as gas clouds.

BFG is great fun if:

- you play with the modified Ordnance rules

- you play with terrain

- you play scenarios

If you Michigan B&Cers ever meet a former GW staffer named James Covell (if he still has it), I made a space station for him using sprues to form a framework like the Orbital dock in "Star Trek: The Motion Picture". I even incorporated a flying base "stick" to hold a ship under repair, for which we made rules for sending it out damaged...

Always wanted to try my hand at BFG as the rules look interesting "Ramming Speed" :D

Finding players may be hard though as GW seems to almost have forgotten about it - or at least in my eyes

Tell your buds to get in it. Write some fluff and have an ongoing campaign and fluff story of your respective fleets and captains.

could be very fun and challenging with some scenarios

(one ive been thinking about is a battlefleet game where the attack has 6 transports, all have to reach a certain planet. All the while the attacker and defender have a battlefleet game. Then play a 40k game where the defender gets 2000 points while the attacker gets 500 points per transport that reached the surface)

Hi again

I've asked if the powers-that-be on this Forum start a BFG subforum- if there is one for Dawn of War then I don't see why BFG shouldn't get one.

After all, if it wasn't for these leviathans of space then we couldn't get our space marines to the battlezones could we?

Lets keep this thread alive. For those that have them post some pics, fleet lists etc to help inspire us further.

cheers

Isiah

There's no need to send either Kurgan or me PMs.

As I told Isiah, adding BFG and other games to our forums is a topic we've been discussing. Whatever we decide to do will take into account a lot of issues and look to the best interests of the gaming community.

And for those who are still concerned, I play BFG, too. :D

Thanks, isiah.

My fleet usually runs 1500 points, and consists of the Exelion (Emperor-class Battleship), the Rodger Young (Mars-class Battlecruiser), three other cruisers of various configurations depending on my mood, and either the Xenephon (Dauntless-class Light Cruiser) and squadron of modified Cobras, or just two squadrons of escorts.

Any points I have left over after that get spent on an Admiral, maybe a re-roll, and occasional upgrades when merited. Shark Assault Boats for an Emperor-class ship are not optional in my fleet!

Hi guys!

Has been such a long time since I have posted on this forum, and I feared it lost for good! Would like to say hi to anyone who remembers me (I am a real life squat, and ride a trike while drinking flagons of beer by the way :jaw: ), but anyways..

I find it hard to believe that the eldar fleet has not been mentioned - I have heard rumour that Jervis Johnson was given free reign with the eldar, a hell of a lot of playtesting to ensure balance was neglected, and does it show! A friend of mine plays an eldar fleet and very very rarely loses, curse his pointy ships and bag of pixie tricks!

To be honest BFG is essentially a naval combat game, in relation to its 2D playing field and 'torpedoes', but if you have got the time and patience (I have played several games lasting 6-7 hours) it can be immensely rewarding.

It has a depth of rules that is missing in most GW games incarnations these days, and if like me you have a large feeling of warmth when thinking back to rolling to see what happens to a vortex grenade or whether your titan crew can bring their reactor back on line then I can guarantee you will like this game ^_^

the eldar fleet wasnt brought up because this is a space marine forum :P, but yes the rules are fantastic and i love how you can do the missions yourself using like 500 pts of 40k, it also ties fantastic into campains, what i love most about the game is you have to plan your attacks 2-3 turns before they actually happen, great game

I was asking about a BFG subforum before the Great Warp Storm. Heck, before I became Penitent! It all depends on the level of interest, GW's negligence notwithstanding...

If you're interested in playing a 'fluffy' fleet try the Armageddon fleetlist. It allows you to combine the Imperial and Marine fleets with some restrictions (the Imperial fleets is restricted to certain ships... no Master of the Fleet sans battlebarge, etc.) but it certainly 'portrays' what I'd consider to be a more typical fleet configuration containing space marines.

Besides, the huge number of lances on the Apocalypse class Battleship and the very cool Endurance/Endeavour/etc. class light cruisers are awesome.

So if you want a single company of Marines backing up the mighty fleets of the imperium that'd be the fleetlist for you.

You, penitent? :)

Just kidding.

I would also take a look at Fanatic #6 - there are alternative Space Marine lists in there as well including Crusade Fleets and Dominion Fleets.

BFG is a great game, but do yourself a favor and do not spend ANY money on a Space Marine fleet. Not only is the Space Marine fleet not the best fleet, it is probably the single worst fleet in the game. The best fleet in the game is the Chaos fleet. The Imperial Navy fleet is competitive, but to beat Chaos you either have to be the better player, be unusually lucky, or jam your fleet with Nova Cannons (which I don't like doing).

Anyhow, not only is BFG a fun game, but it's probably the most affordable game GW makes. You can have a pretty good sized fleet without having to shell out too much dough.
