The Cobra Pattern Space Fighter

Hobbes

Recommended Posts

I've had this idea for awhile to make a small jet to support Thunderhawks and BattleCruisers. Something that can cruise at low altitudes but also fly in deep space unlike a land speeder. A Space Marine Dogfighter! A number of books reference Cobras flying in formation, and since I've never seen a Cobra before I decided to call it one. The "real" Cobra might not look anything like this, it might not even be Space Marine, could be a Guard Fighter, nevertheless this is my rendition of the Cobra Pattern Space Fighter!

This stage was mainly structural, so not much to look at unless you're like me and can visually fill in the blanks! The aft hull was built from a Landspeeder sawed down the middle, and the wings and fore were built from a Predator kit. Dreadnought Lascannons on the sides, I'm thinking ruleswise it will be a Predator Annihilator maybe those engines could be Hunter Killers, or maybe the Hunter Killers will be in the form of underslung missiles.... :hmm

Obviously very rough at this point, still structuralizing everything. Here you can see the main Burner (Landspeeder Engine) and the Pitch Engines (Rhino Exhausts) I plan to add some hover devices on the bottom for easy Space docking on landspeeder like maneuvering at low altitudes. I also pinned a fin into the top.

Still working on the front fairing, I might use these bitz... I especially like the slope of the Lascannon Turret. Right now with that ammo box, which needs to be shortened to match the width of the exahuasts and the lascannon piece, the pilot can just see over the top. I haven't decided on an open or closed cockpit yet, but I'm working my way back towards that area now...

As always comments and critique are appreciated, my girlfriend always tells me she likes it (albeit at great prompting) but she doesn't fully appreciate it nor does she know enough to give true honest feedback, she simply says: "Yes, it's wonderful, now put it down let's go!"

It's either madness  or genius  , I'm leaning towards the latter.

Amazing use of parts hobbes, the only thing I think that needs revision is the front of the cockpit, it looks a little to bulky.

An extremely good use of bitz.

The cockpits front doesnt need to be that bulky. Try to see if you can cut an Pred- turret to an decent shape to give a small slope. Perhaps use the plastict that comes with the blisters as the cockpit window.

Cobras are Imperial Frigates/Escort ships. They're not fighters.

"Cobra class escorts form a significant proportion of Battlefleet Obscuras, their versatility making them a favoured vessel for scouting, patrolling and raiding. The main asset of the Cobra is its great speed, enabling it to catch the light, fast craft favoured by pirates."

Picture of the BFG Cobra model.

That aside, great conversion.

Looks great Hobbes!

Before the big B&C burnout I had a thread on a Space Marine fighter going and wrote up an article on one.

I've been thinking of making a Marine jet fighter myself. - Glad to see someone did.

hm... - And you got to much money :)

Keep up the excellent work!

I know SM are supposed to eat kittens for breakfast, but even I doubt they can suck vaccum for any extended period.

Great idea and very good design. Even though SM are tough as nails, there should still have a closed cockpit. You could use some plastic card and clear plastic from a blister.

I like the big bold front end on it, it reminds me of the old WWII fighter the Hurricane.

Is it too late to work in a hard wired servitor navigator ?(leaves the SM to work the engines of destruction)

I like the name Tomahawk Strike Craft or even the Hurricane.

Lovely work as always.

A name? Hmmmmm. Quite a few Marine vehicles are named for storms - hurricane, whirlwind, tempest, typhoon....

Lightning has been taken, so can't call it that. :)

How about the Squall-class?

Please don't call it the Kellog - I doubt cereal was meant to fly in this millenium, let alone the 40th :P

I like the conversion, and while I would also think he would need a closed cockpit for deepspace missions, I feel that it wouldn't do the model justice. Maybe instead of using it as a Predator you could use it as a Landspeeder? Just replace the lascannons by multi-melta barrels, or use the missile launchers in the wings to use it as a Typhoon variant?

Spitfire gets my vote!

Sacrilege! :P You can't call anything but a Supermarine Spitfire a Spitfire!

On topic: I'd second calls for making the nose of the aircraft less blunt, less flat, I know Imperial aircraft tend to fly by brute force rather than aerodynamics but even so the front of that aircraft is a little non-aerodynamic IMO...

ya - agree with that - the fairing should slope down some more - maybe use the Incom T-65 as inspration? (I KNOW most of you know what that is!)

ANd i Also agree that it needs an enclosed cockpit - maybe a high visibility bubble-type canopy?

i agree i rember reading somewhere (possibly lord of the night) that most if not all imperial craft had the tapered/eagle beak prow. Oher than that, i think that if the marine isnt going to be able to see out of the front and your set on the ammo box being there, then maybe harwire the marine into it, matrix style.

Keep up the good work!!
