Table to play on

Hey people.

I dont know if people have got gaming tables at their own house, but i havent :(

Im restriced to play at home...

Until I visied a terain academy last week at my local GW and its absolutly easy! spend 2 days, dedicate a few hours and youve got yourself a cool looking dedicated terain piece :(

Now a few of my friends are beginning to pick the hobby up, and i want to be able to play at home (cause the nearest GW is 1 hour away....and we got drinks and food at our own homes :D)

Im wondering, do people have their own buildings and terain for home play? and if so can you show me some screenshots? i want to go on a "terain-building" frenzy and could use some inspiration :P

Oh yes, people have amazing table's at home. They range from huge cities to low valleys. But for a small timer getting into the hobby, I have advice for you my friend.

Home depot is your friend for all things terrian and table top. Quirky mechanical things look alot like futuristic terrian. Take advantage of this! Second, the good ol' HD sells cheap half inch slabs of wood, I got 4x6. Took it home, and used a combination of sand, GW and and rock material, and some rocky material from by backyard to make the table.

How do you make the table with such material? First, I bought a big tub of Elmer's white glue from my local wal-mart. Then I bought a cheap $.50 paint brush, the ones you use to paint the walls of your house with. I took some of the glue I planned on using and poured it into a a plastic bowl. Not too much mind you. I dipped in my brush coated about a foot area of glue, sprinkled in my material evenly, making sure to cover the whole area of glue. I did the entire table like this, one foot at a time. After it all dried, I put another layer of super glue on to dry. Then I took a good ol can of green spray paint, sprayed it good, and after that mixed up from light green and drybrushed the entire board.

After that, put some terrain on and your good to go! The entire project will at least cost you no more than $50 :D

I'll edit with some pictures later, currently I'm working on a game board make up of 1x1 foot separate tiles, just another way to do a board.

had an old friend who got the privilige to be able to use a whole garage for his hobby ...

he had 2 regular tables and 1 huge (think it was 4 regulars) with cityscape on it ...

think the board was made to hold 4x 1500 points or so ...

if you got the space to put it away when you not play then making a good board is a must ...

the problem usualy is to store it and not break it =/

oh aye, thats exactly mo problem...

we arent living in a tiny house but we simply got tons and tons and TONS of junk in it already

my problem is that i gotta have terain that can be put on the board seperatly and can be mixed around to make a different table everytime  it requires alot of space tho (which i atm dont have tho...)

since im cleaning out my room atm (gonna move out of my house for a month by tommorow) i gotta clean my room anyway, so im throwing away old garbage from kindergarden and who knows what kind of other trash...(come across some stuff that brings back memories, those are going to the shelf of memory :P)

sounds easy enough Ender26x, but a few quesitons :P

1: what is "the good ol' HD" ?? i live in holland so i probably dont got the same stores as you do....

2: What stuff should i use to make the terain on? im taking some sorta wood or cartboard?

3: Should i make a green board? what if i play cotyfight games? :P (could make 2...*ponders*)

Thats about it... oh yea, and what sorts of terain should i make? :D i already got the old ruined church from third edition starting box and one of the new cities of death buildings that i got from the terain academy, my brother has made ssome hills from polystyrene and we got some ugly looking trees glued to a piece of cardboard (to act as wood lol)

1: HD = Home Depot. A store for hardware and 'do it yourself types' home improvement.

2: Plywood. Best is 3/4" or 1" Thickness for rigidity's sake.

3: As stated, you could do either green or grey, or desert tan, whatever. Another thought is to do up the table as one type, and the go out to a fabric store and get sections of apropriately colored felt cloth to place over the table to change it's color and put your terrain upon. The felt can easily be rolled up onto cardboard tubes for easy storage to prevent creasing (perminate folds in the cloth).

Another idea is to do a dual-surface table. Build a tray to fit the 4x6 foot table top into on 2x4 inch or 4x4 inch posts for legs. You might want to put in some sort of 'X' brace to support the table from underneath. Cover the inside and upper surface of the 'X' with felt to protect the table's surfaces, and bingo... you have a reversable table with two different surfaces using ONE plywood sheet. A bit more thought in design could net you with storage areas under the table's supporting 'tray' section, between the legs, to put in storage trays or boxes to store your armies, terrain, templates, etc.

When not using the table for battles, just use a thick quilt to cover it and keep anything put upon it from damaging the table's surface... or get a 2nd sheet of plywood to replace the terrain surface with bare plywood that you don't care if it gets a bit dinged and dented up.

Just a few thoughts,

Rymeer

I'm pretty lucky because half my basement is devoted to Warhammer 40K. I have two 8x4 ft boards and room for one more. I'll also hopefully be adding display cases soon. Now, if there's anyone in New Hampshire that wants to play...

Anyways, here's some pictures of what I am currently working on: an 8x 4 ft. cityfight board to go with the Medusa V campaign.

From a few months ago. It's more advanced now:

I hope this may serve as inspiration. Good luck to you.

:jaw: omg Light of the Emperor thats some seriously awesome terain!!

and Rymeer like...10 seconds before i read your comments on the twin sided table i thought the exact same thing myself (read my own post on two tyables i though; hey! its got 2 sides!" :D) id just varnish the table after drybrushing it, i take that would prevent the paint from chipping up to much...

ive got enough storing space in my room to keep the table(s) (some space between 2 a bookcase and closet  )

can someone also tell me where i can get thin sheets of polysyrene? the best ive found atm is like 20-30 mm thick :P (got it at a DIY shop, they dident have it any smaller...)

Someone on WargamerAU is chalanging GW on cityfight terrain (spending $AUS300 (same price as the cityfight box) on materials) and building his own.

Theres some nice stuff there at the moment.
