The Emperor's Champion

Recommended Posts

I painted this guy in December -05 for a local painting competition, but as it's been a while, I think I can do even better now.

He got second place in the 40K category. It was the first time I entered in that category; though I still could've entered in the Youngbloods there wasn't any real competition for me there, anymore.

Now, to the pics!

I like how he turned out, though his details are far from perfect (and neither is the blending... ;) ), I dig the contrasts between the grey and terracotta colours, with the pale-ish blues, red and greens.

Could look pretty nice on an army, methinks... ;)

Any C&C welcome!

Cheers, Moribund!

Wow, that's really good stuff if you can get in the youngbloods. Definetly would look good on an army. Mind if I look into that idea? Knowing me, its almost impossible for me to do it, I always think , hmmm, thats a good idea, plan it all, then just give up on it.

What colours did you do for the terracota and the brown kind of chip/rust marks on it.

Hmmm...the back of the left hand seems weird to me, like the paint seems thick. Maybe it's just me, but it just doesnt look right.

But Other than that, looks great, i love the blue eyes

Thanks for all the kind words!

Considering the back of the left hand, the paint isn't thick at all, it's probably just the lightning...

And that competition was the very last I could compete in Youngblood in; I turned 16 this January... :P

Anyway, when it comes to painting the grey, I did mix a lot of colours (sorry about that, Sanctus! :tu: ). The midtone is a mix of Codex Grey, a bit of Fortress Grey, Bleached Bone and Snakebite Leather. Then I added black for shading (many thin layers, feathering all of them carefully into the midtone) and white for highlights (as on the shading.)

It isn't very time-efficient...

The Terracotta is Vermin Brown, shaded with mixes of Vermin and Scorched Browns, and highlighted Vermin mixed with Bleached Bone.

Any more questions is welcome! :P

Cheers, Moribund!

Gah, there is that evil 'm' word :)

If my painting skills were alot better than what they are now (give me another 8 or so years i guess) then ill probably start entertaining the concept of mixing, as that grey is lovely. Plus i take a few weeks to a few months to paint a single mini, so mixing i dont think is me, or else it will average a mini per year.

Still, I think you should try it out! Just play around with it a bit, and see what you can get out of it.

Though I wouldn't recomment extensive mixing on armies (just to achieve smooth blends and such, but darkest shadow, lightest highlight and especially the main colour should always be stock colour), doing it on any nice models, of any race, you find is pretty fun!

As you want to keep the quality of your army's models pretty much the same, no improvement in your tecnique will be achieved (except brush control, which is he most important factor of all when painting minis! Even more important than SE-NMM! :D ). But painting nice, individual models from time to time, using all your skill will get you very far!

This one was painted in about three or four days of constant painting (probably 5-8 hrs/day), so if you've got some time: go for it!

Cheers, Moribund!
