So here he is, after a ton of work...

Firsts: NMM silver and gold, base that doesnt look 100% crap, hourglass(and the last...) first attempt at wood grain...looks alright but too small to see in picture(on hourglass) first mini for a painting comp...first mini i actually decided to blend with(fully)

Colours/Shades used: around 73, around 28 of which were Browns

hopefully it does me well in competition, i sure learned a bunch(like how not to do many things )

oh just before pics....base is paler, not so browny, armour is a bit less yellowy, there is a whiteish blend in the hammer crack, there is white on the silver and some gold

comment, criticize(whatever you can think of...i never take negative to heart, and i dont run away crying...for long )

First off, Great mini so far! For first time with NNM that is fantastic! I would never have guessed you were new to it.

I would say keep the book black personally, bc when I think of the inquisition I hardly think of bright happy colors such as teal.

For the belt buckle, go with a white. I think it would be simple, but it would set it off nicely.

The eagles I am unsure about, I have never seen the bald eagle style, so it could be cool. I would say try it and see what you think.

As for the hammer, (i am not very familiar with this model, I guess it is a thunder hammer) I would make it look like it is glowing with energy and power, maybe green or to keep with the theme, perhaps an orange.

Keep up the good work and keep adding more pics! I cant wait to see more!

***thanks! the gold looks different from most ive seen but i like it, and it came pretty easy to me, sadly the silver hasnt yet hahaha

im trying to use some grey/white as you mentioned on the buckle, i think i may of found a way

as to the teal, i should mention that a member of his retinue has a teal robe(scaly green actually) so it may tie in with the retinue, or it may just look out of place(my issue) theres also some white too which is why i thought your white idea would work

ive seen the eagle done that way once...i didnt like how it was done, and htought i could do a better job...we'll see

and i was thinking about a glowing hammer, but im not going to do OSL quite yet, as i would have to cover up my NMM, and im too scared to try it and have to redo it all! hahahah, but i could do the power weapon effect on it, it is a Daemonhammer after all so reds/oranges/yellows could very well be nice for the burning/cleansing effect

ill work on his retinue a bit as well and get some pics of them up

some more WIPs, two of his henchmen with some NMM work on one

***older images removed**

the white may look a bit rough, and thats because it is, the model was painted before i got ahold of it(this is for a friend) annd when i stripped it it got a bit rough looking

also note: this is the first time ive ever painted white! hahahaha funny i know....ive never painted yellow yet...and only painted teal for the first time for the model above! a lot of firsts! but what do I expect ive only painted like 20 models in my life...

I definately would NEVER have guessed you were new to doing NMMs....EVER. You have some very, VERY smooth and good blendgng going on there, and the colors match eachother and blend into eachother very well. Good job  . As for the colors, I think you should go with bl;ack for the book, a very deathly white for the eagle, white/grey for the belt buckle, and for the hammer, I think (if you're up to the challenge) you should do some lighting/glow effects with some teal/green. This is for a couple of reasons. 1) The green would add a nice contrast to the model, making it FAR more visually appealing IMHO, and 2) (If you have not yet attempted lighting effects before) It would be a great challenge and give you some good practice.

Oh, and BTW, nice retinue B)

I hope what I said was helpful! Give us some updates!

i wish my first NMM were that good.

For the hammer, i would love to see it done in green or red marble. Clearly you got skills that kills, so i think you're probly up to it.

Not sure about the eagle though. Do eagle come in all black? or all white? that could be interesting.

I love the yellow! I've always admired people who paint yellow armies (Iyanden Eldar, Imperial Fists SM) because I've always spent way too much time painting the yellow.

Answers to the questions:

1. Teal or black? Black. If it's one of the two definitely black, I don't think teal and yellow would work that well. If you'd rather have teal, make it a darker teal with dynamic highlights on the corners!

2. Hammer? Perhaps some NMM dark blue color?

3. Eagle? I like the idea of a bald eagle!

4. Belt Buckle? I'd paint it the same color as the hammer, a NMM-ish dark blue?

That's NMM? Dammit, mate, that's the most realistic NMM I've seen in... like... EVER!

Color recipe please [insert puppy dog eyed emoticon]?

hahah thanks everyone, and Oblierator, im sure you can see 17489127984 billion times better jobs at coolminiornot.com, in fact they pointed out what i did wrong(i already knew, but it helps with added comment and then some advice ;))

as to colours...:

Gold:

scorched brown

vermin brown

bronzed flesh

bubonic brown

(some parts have golden yellow leftover, but ive recently cut it out)

bleached bone

and some skull white

(one highlight between each using the previous colour and the new one...ex. scorched/vermin...bronzed bubonic)

Red:

scorched brown

scab red

scab red/tanned flesh mix for brightest highlight

(about 4 highlights in between brown and scab, and then 2 or 3 between scab and last highlight)

***this got me a deep dull red, i hate the blood red ultra highlights, drive me nuts, i dont want bright red dammit!! :D

Crapy Silver:

greys, skull white and some black

Flesh:

tanned flesh and one mix forget which...not much highlighting on it

i watered it down big time and this creates a kind of layer that can be peeled off completely...so i took my knife, scraped off a section and then filled it in with bionics...this got me the raised part, so the skin actually is layered over top of the bionics

Papers:

scorched brown

and then MANY highlights of scorched/codex grey mixes to get a more grey looking paper instead of beige/yellowy

Brown holster:

dark flesh and scorched brown mix, then highlighted, then final highlight with graveyard earth

Scaly green actually has two different styles, i did them two different days and wasnt thinking :)

i used bleached bone and skull white i think, creating two different hues, its not FULLY noticeable unless you look hard

i was away for the day(had a football game) so more WIPs might be up tommorow or the next day

ok an update on the daemonhammer

http://i6.photobucket.com/albums/y218/Starks3333/Other%20Models/HPIM0624.jpg

should i add more orange/yellow and lessen the red?

and what colour should i do the hilt? i have no ideas right now, blue, green and purple wont meld well with the other colours, i already have 4 shades of brown, black MAY work but might look too strong im unsure yet...white i think would stand out too much...

thanks!

I like the hammer a lot, but I think a bright highlight such as (dont hurt me! :D) blood red on the outer most edges of the red. It looks great, but I think the dark red around the edges makes it seem like it was seething with energy and power, but that it has started to cool down and darken (as metals do). The blood red would make it look as if it is full of raw power, shining bright, ready to banish the next daemon it meets to the warp for eternity.

Also, I was thinking that to tie in the Inquisitor with his retinue, it might not be a bad idea to redo his cape in teal? Other than that, try the book teal and see what it looks like. I think it could look quite good with your skills.

Hammer looks awesome!!! But why is the handle pewter...
***ha ha ha....i have killed for less..... :D (<--thats a ninja right?) ive had trouble figuring out what colours to do the handle, im thinking black with NMMsilver butt end and piece in between hammer and handle, i need the darker colours to balance the hammer out..i hope it works!

***ya i actually had blood red, that is blood red, donno why it came out so dark, i did like 3 layers too, so in order to lighten it up(which im doing) ive added in fiery orange and now its brighter

***as to the teal, a Teal cape i think would be too much and steal from the striking colour of the henchman, also it would change the colour scheme and i think toy with how the orange weapon looks...however the teal book i have been considering even though i have it black right now, im going to paint the corner pieces in maybe some NMM, and then see how it looks after i attach the hammer, i may need the teal to counter the brightness of the hammer

i have a problem though, i didnt realise Ottawa is ACTUALLY geting a Conflict! (i stopped paying attention to big events as none ever came to ottawa...) its 25 days away and i have an entire 1700pt Crimson Fist army to paint! but i wanted to enter Torquemada into the painting competition, see how i do, maybe take home a third place, or something *hopes the great painters stay at home*

so ya updates may be a bit slower as im rushing to get some CF together!

OH and i gave in and bought St Celestine today, may return her if i need the extra $25 for some more Fists stuff

thanks!

ok so heres the base, not done, but i wanted to keep it more of a desert look, the bird makes me feel desert-ish(or badlands)

how would i paint the cork to look badlands ish? its kinda already that colour

http://i6.photobucket.com/albums/y218/Starks3333/Other%20Models/HPIM0627.jpg

i really like this cork business, i have only really thin stuff right now though

I think a very rich, dark ceramic color would really do well on that base. Maybe using terracotta, vermin fur, and tanned flesh would give it the badlands look you are looking for; a bit dark, yes, but it could look like clay or slate or some such mineral.

In hindsight, I have to agree with you about the cape; keeping it red is definately the right way to go.

ok some more WIPs the front is done, just the bird, base and hammer left, and im really considering doing freehand on his cape or something because its quite plain, im also retouching and possibly changing the fur around a bit, the final highlight is too much like the flesh tone

***note the hammer isnt done(not even the orange part) i switched the book from black to teal, brought out the metals more, balanced out the orange and ya... did the hourglass with glassy effect and sand inside, too detailed to catch with my camera i think

working on the base now  going to add some static grass, paint it brownish to look kinda desert like

comments, criticism, ideas, whatever, feel free to add ;)

ok some updates on the hammer, did the NMM work cleaned up the blending on the hammer, and now im trying to decide what colour to go with for the handle, not many options left, teal or black basicly all i can think of, black would cause problems with the NMM or look undershaded i think...and teal, i think it looks nice, but im unsure if its too much or not...

http://i6.photobucket.com/albums/y218/Starks3333/Other%20Models/HPIM0672.jpg

http://i6.photobucket.com/albums/y218/Starks3333/Other%20Models/HPIM0669.jpg

the silver i think got watered down a bit in one of the photos, it looks better ni person(however im still unsure if what i did with the darkspace is correct, neither picture show it however...i just painted it a dark dark grey...) oh i just noticed i forgot to touch up the white on the butt of the hammer

im going to leave the handle for now and go onto the bird

not much progress on him as ive been busy painting up that 1700pts list, i think ive fallen behind with them though, only about 11 models and almost a dreadnought done in basic colours...i still have 18 or so more models including conversions and 7 vehicles!!(including 3 speeders and a land raider...)

so thats that for now...ill try and work some magic with that bird and then...the base....im still debating how to do it(like i know desert/badlands) but im unsure about what effects etc...

Hmmm, I'm a little torn on the color of that hammer head... It's a really cool color, but I don't know if it looks animated enough to look like a power weapon, if you get what I mean. I kinda want to suggest the "lightning bolt lines" that you see often, but I think it looks a little cheesy. In this case, though, I'd say go with it.

For the hilt, you could go with like a leathery brown, that would work well I think. Great Job by the way.

***actually its a daemonhammer, so i wanted it fiery, but i agree theres just something about it...i would source light it but im scared to ruin my firts ever NMM attempt hahaha

i was thinking of adding in runes of somesort to the hammer, kinda burning runes or somethign to banish daemons?? i donno...

ill see how brown looks, i have to think of what shade i want to use! hahaha...the teal just strikes me too bright i think in combo with orange thats why i originally wanted black to dull it down....hmmmm decisions decisions!

thanks~

If the hammer is appearing to glow from inside - then add a very very thing thing of white through the groove (thinned-down white mixed with a little yellow should suffice)
