The Penitent Crusade

FireLizard

Recommended Posts

Well, my first major undertaking. 27 days to go and counting.. I've got 32 models left to paint.

In a nutshell, These guys lost a crusade against the Necrons and until they earn their honor back, all Templar iconography is covered in shame. Think like the old Medevial knights who needed to hide their coat of arms for whatever reason.. same thing.. that's the reason behind the cloaks.. Full fluff will be posted in the BT section

I've got Pics for EVERYTHING so far, but I don't want ot overload the thread, so I'll post a few things, and a Link to the rest :o I'll update as I get more done!

Please, let me know what you think.. This is my first Marine army, Praise be to the Emperor, And my first painted army. I'm also doing exclusively City Fight bases...

ALL images can be seen here in the respective albums: http://s3.photobucket.com/albums/y68/Fire_Lizard/

On to the Pics!

Great stuff! I really enjoyed looking at it all. It definitely looks like you have put a lot of work into your models so far.

One small criticism, though. The dreadnoughts left leg (the right one as you look at the picture), there is a mold line running right down the center of the leg. It may be too late, but if you can, you should remove it. It would be a shame to let that one small thing detract from the overall appearance of your army and possibly hurt your painting score.

Good luck with the rest of the models.

I don't like a lot the marines with boots but your work is anyway good, great chaplain and I love your terminator... I'm making a dreadnought with sentinel legs too.. cool ^_^ great GS work! the only suggestion I can give you is smaller highlight line but anyway they looking good

Wow  Thanks for the great feedback all!

@ Brother Renn: Ack... see, I knew I'd miss a couple of those :P Unfortunately, it's too late.. He's already dull-coated.

@ HolyCrusader: More contrast? Hmm... Any suggestions on a color scheme that might help that out? I'll be honest, the whol eBlack as a primary color threw me off a bit in that department...

@ konskrypt: heh, all I had to go off of was an image, at about that angle of The Deathknight... I think that was Boltman's? Let me see what I can do abotu putting one together.. BTW.. all weapon points on that are magnatized.. same with the Dread :)

@ Raziellycas & Chaplain Desmodus: I'll be honest, the whole highlighting of the black is kicking my butt. I originally just had a highlight of shadow grey and that's it.. but I didn't think that had enough contrast :P So I did the lighter one on top of that. A bit late to change now.. but hey, it's definately teaching me a lesson that's for sure! Any suggestions for highlighting the Black?

@ pinkbunny: THank you!! I am going to try and get a tutorial on that written up soon.. I can do that at work so it doesn't eat up painting time :P

Thanks for the awesome feedback all :) I really appreciate it! Any other suggestions or anythign at all I'm more than happy, willing and wanting to listen to! This board was pretty much my inspiration and ya'll are great!

Yes very lovely stuff. I love the Termies towards the end (I ended up using Iron Warriors heads for that knight look). And that chaplain looks very promising.

The highlighting on the black does look a little bright though but then again I cannot highlight :)

Nice stuff

I do not post on here very often but I do have a few suggestions on the topic of colors to set off the black. Reds oranges and yellows are all warm colors that attract the eye and look very striking against dark backgrounds (Everything goes with black slacks after all); while greens blues and purples are all dark 'cool' colors that are calming to the eye and in the context of an angry 9 foot giant bearing down on you something that would elicit dread rather than terror. Not sure if this was helpful, but I hope so.

Oh, and good luck with the army. It is looking very good so far.

My only criticism is the head on your unpainted chappy, although that is more just a beef with the model itself. He looks pudgy. All the same, I can't wait to see chaplain chubster painted up!

Great looking stuff, I want to see an entire army converted and painted to this style. :3

The thing about the black, it just looks rushed compared to your reds and some metals. If you took your time on it, it could easily be a best army at a Grand Tourney. But then again, that is from my point of view.

Again, great stuff. :3

Black Templars? No.. Sorry, not buying it, they don't scream black templars to me like black templars should, they don't even look like black templars, no writing, no parchement, no templars cross.

Now, that being said, they look like a good army, I just think you should give them a new name and use the templars rules (which is no doubt why you wanted to use them)

Nice army, yes the black is quite rushed and it should be shaped up, but dang thats one nice army, i like the use of all the fur and capes on your models definently gives them a coherent scheme, maybe ill see your army at GD Chicago

Been away for a bit.. but back to it!

I've nearly got a Toot for the "stalker" Predator done at work.. once I refine it, I'll post 'er up.

I ended up cleaning up ALL my highlights. It took some precious time as I'm still painting for the Chicago GT, but I think they look MUCH better. Not nearly so clunky. When I get time to shoot new images, I'll post em up! Thanks for all the suggestions in that department, as well as the contrasting colors.. I tried to do that with my Neophytes and they do look a bit more 'punchy' in the color department.

Angelos, I'll definately be at the GD in Chicago! I'll be int he GT actually.. we'll see how I do. The fluff is nearly done for them.. I'm just trimming the fat so-to-speak. I know I'm missing, well, everything (except the writing.. they have the seals and script) of the BTs.. but that's purposeful. I'll get a linky up to the fluff when I get it done and posted

Seriously, Thanks for all the kind words and encouragement and suggestions! More to come! Just 21 more Models to paint byt he 28th!

Killer conversions and glorious painting.

I will definitly be tracking you down at the GT to see these guys in person. I will be there with the poorly painted BA that are purple and red.

I really like the dynamic poses on the assault marines and the base work is awesome. You should be very proud of this army on the table.

Very cool conversions. The dual plasma toting assault marine is an especially great pose. I love subtle poses like that.

That chaplain is looking really promising too. Can't wait to see it painted.

They are beautiful! I've seen these in real life and the pictures don't do them justice! As for the boots, its a matter of taste, I think they look fine, and fit in just fine, but swapping them out for more marine like boots isn't that hard. All a matter of taste.

Keep it up :o

B lack is a real fething pain to paint, but I like what you did. And the green work on the cloaks is excellent. Congrats on getting your army together and good luck in Chicago!
