Space Sharks

Recommended Posts

I thought I'd show my first (nearly) complete tactical marine. This guy was a test to see how hard it would be to paint these guys. Overall I'm happy with him. The freehand iconography turned out okay, but I'm toying with using decals for the actual army, though I've not had great luck with the do-it-yourself decal kits. I also have a picture of the squad's rhino. I actually did this last year and it is what inspired me to pursue a whole army. The painting is a bit lacking as it needs to be re-base coated and drybrushed to match the new painting style. Still it will give you an idea of where I'm headed with these guys. C&C are welcome. By the way, as he was a test he was cobbled together from old parts, hence the arm and backpack.

p.s. sorry for the mediocre pics, I'm still trying to figure out my wife's camera.

Looks great but im unsure about the silver backpack. Looks a bit too shiny. How about making it grey or perhaps black?

Another idea is to keep the silver, but us a brown ink over it, then a light drybrush with Boltmetal.

It's not just that it's too shiny it's that it's out of balance. The large amount of silver up top is too much for the size/shapes of silver throughout the rest of the model. Grey or Black with Silver ball-vents would probably look best.

The silver vent is an old habit I've had for years. When I first started collecting marines I looked at the vent and said to myself "I bet that vent get's hot, paint would probably peel off it, maybe just leave it bare metal." so I've always painted them that way since. I agree that it does look to shiny. On the next one I'll try just drybrushing the silver on instead of a solid coat. I also have some brown ink so I'll give that a go as well. Another part of the problem is the flash reflection, and the 2nd ed. pack which has the tubes on the side. I'll go back and do them in black to tone it down a bit.

As for the moldlines, like I said this guy was a test. I've tried to clean up the rest of the minis, but I always seem to find more after I've painted them. ^_^

Well then I guess you got it all together and you're ready to crank out an army!!

You did a *great* job on the icon but for your own sanity it probably is best that you figure out the transfer thing ^_^

I like the old back pack. I find that it makes the armour seem like it has been handed down for many years, and it gives age to the marine, too.

btw-good work keep it up. would like to see some more space sharks

I like the design of the old backpacks, but the sculpting is not as great as the new ones. I did make a couple of mark 6 marines, but wasn't sure whether to use old or new packs.

And I'll post more as I get them done. :cuss

I'd be tempted to do a red line down the middle of the tank, it would really ad some variety to it and break up the grey more.

Also, the mouth on the side looks really cool, however, an eye is really needed to go with it!

Huh...I hadn't thought of that. Thanks!, I maynot do it on the rhino, but I have a whirlwind and predator to finish too. :)

Use boltgun metal for the vents, that should also keeo into that what you said about them getting hot and the paint getting of. Adding some black and brown to it because of smoke getting out wouldn't be to bad either.

Finally, an update! Okay, so I've been distracted by RL commitments lately and have not had a chance to paint until this weekend. I am proud to announce the I now have two, count 'em two marines completed, yeah! (well that's better than none right... :tu: )

Anywho, don't think I took 2 days to finish one marine (only took one), I spent today painting up most of the rest of the squad (still have 1 marine and the heavy bolter marine to go). So without further ado here is what I have...

Tactical marine #2

This is what the rest of the guys should look like. I tried puting a little brown ink on the vent and it looks tons better, though doesn't show to well in the picture. And yes I see the mold lines, but it seems no matter how much I scrape I always miss some, oh well...

And here is the rest of the squad. The gradation is a lot rougher on this lot as I didn't take as much time as I have with the other 2 marines. Still should be okay for play I should think...

:( Hmmm these look pretty good,i like the red stripe ,very striking...

an idea perhaps, sharks range in color of grey to blue, perhaps the back pack could be a shade of space wolves grey or shadow grey... :D

honestly i would put a plasticard fin on the back of the packs ;)

As you can see, I opted for the free-hand badge/tactical symbol route. As for the basing, I'm still experimenting with that.

Sorry for the double post, but I also wanted to show you some pictures of my wip chaplain, and I wasn't sure of the picture limit per post. He is equipped with a Jump Pack, but it is still in progress.

Thanks for the replies...

Those look excellent
Thanks Neph! glad you liked them.

I seem to recall seeing these a long time ago..

I posted my wip models late last month, maybe that's what you remember?

I think the sharks painted on the shoulderpads would look cooler and more aggressive without black slits in the red eyes. With the slit they look kinda cartoonish.

While I agree, the eyes with slits are the official badge so I decided to go ahead and do them that way.

Thanks again guys!
