Ultramarines Timeline

Gather round, you Lexicania, Codiciers and Epistolaries. Take off those psychic hoods and put on your thinking caps. I have an idea for a grand project which will amuse and edify you, while creating a lasting monument of Ultramarine lore. The Ultramarines Timeline. We will work together to compile every dated reference to the Ultramarines from every source available.

This top post will be where I will put everything in the correct order. Each entry should contain the following: The date. Use the entire standard date numerical string if it's available. Otherwise, just the year (745.M41) or even the millennium (M37) will be fine. Units or individuals known to be involved (4th company, entire chapter, Uriel Ventris, etc.)

Location, if possible. Notes about event (i.e. The Battle for Ichar IV, or assisted Inquisitor Bozeman with data search, etc.) Basically a short summary of what happened on the date in question.

Cite your source. This is important. Historical research requires verifiable sources. Any official Warhammer 40,000 material is fair game, even licensed stuff. Some discrepancies will inevitably appear, but that's part of the fun! Be sure to provide a copyright date if the edition could be in doubt and a page number, if applicable.

Also, specify which country your White Dwarf is from, if it post-dates the UK/US White Dwarf split (WD 192?). Anything on either the Ultramarines legion or the Ultramarines chapter is of interest. Successor chapters (though we honour them) are not within the scope of this project.

Typical dating code explained:

- 0150935/M32

-- 0 - Check number (reference number, necessary due to temporal distortions)

-- 150 - Year fraction number (administrative convention; year is divided into 1000 equal segment and not part of every day use)

-- 935 - Year number (the year within the millenium)

-- M32 - 32nd millenium

I will color-code these entries as follows, so we can more easily distinguish different periods.

1st Edition (October 1987-October 1993)

2nd Edition (October 1993-October 1998)

3rd Edition (October 1998-August 2004)

4th Edition (August 2004-July 2008)

5th Edition (July 2008-June 2012)

6th Edition (June 2012-May 2014)

7th Edition (May 2014-June 2017)

8th Edition (June 2017-present)

807/M30: The First Crusade begins. (Warhammer 40,000 Compendium, p. 6 states that it took 200 years; I am backdating from the Horus Heresy's start-date as given in the Final Liberation User Manual.)

004/M31 The Fist of Macragge's and the 7th Company's successful three year campaign against the Vektates of Arkenath begins. (Battle for the Abyss, 2008, p.22)

Warmaster Horus orders the Ultramarines Legion to the Veridan system. (Battle for the Abyss, 2008, p.23)

The Fist of Macragge is ambushed and destroyed by the Word Bearers' ship the Furious Abyss. 500 battle brothers of the 7th Company and their captain are lost. A mixed force of Ultramarines, Space Wolves, Thousand Sons, and World Eaters, lead by Captain Cestus of the Ultramarines, sacrifice themselves to destroy the Furious Abyss as it makes its approach to Formaska, a moon of Macragge. (Battle for the Abyss, 2008, p.29, states that it takes place just prior to Horus's arrival at Istvaan III.)

Battle of Calth. Three planets are destroyed by the Word Bearers and Calth's sun is laced with deadly metals, causing it to emit radiation harmful to Calth's atmosphere, before the Ultramarines drive the Word Bearers into the Maelstrom. (Battle for the Abyss, 2008, makes it clear that Kor Phaeron is on his way to Calth at the end of the novel.)

During the Heresy, Captain Lucretius Corvo, a captain and Legion champion, led forces against the Word Bearers Legion on Astagar. During this desperate siege, Corvo's forces held out for six days against many times their number, and in one last, desperate counter-attack he and his chosen band managed to destroy the Traitor Warlord Titan Fellghast and break the siege. For this action, Corvo was awarded a Laurel of Defiance by his Primarch, a sacred object that is still enshrined on the Fortress Novum to the present day. (Imperial Armor Volume 9, 2010, p.116)

021/M31 Roboute Guilliman writes the Codex Astartes. The Second Founding of Space Marines splits the original legions into smaller chapters. (Final Liberation User Manual, p.76)

Second Founding Successor chapters formed: Eagle Warriors, Silver Eagles, Doom Eagles, Novamarines, Patriarchs of Ulixis, White Consuls, Black Consuls, Libators, Inceptors, Praetors of Orpheus, Genesis, Aurora. (Codex Ultramarines, 1995, p.9)

An Ultramarines captain named Sasebo Tezuka had been given command of the newly created Mortifactors and led them to the world of Posul, where he established his fortress monastery and earned many honors in the name of the Emperor before his death. (Warriors of Ultramar, 2003, p.9)

Roboute Guilliman himself gives the Novamarines guardianship of the world of Honourum, a site that had once marked the northward extent of the Ultramarines Legion's advance into the galactic north of the Segmentum Ultima. (Imperial Armor Volume 9, 2010, p.116)

Ca. 107/M31 - 114/M31 The last of Calth's atmosphere burns off as a result of the Word Bearers' attack. (US WD 269, 2002, p.114-115 states that it was within a century of the Heresy's end, while Inferno 44, p.37, states it was within a century after the Battle of Calth's end.)

121/M31 Roboute Guilliman is mortally wounded by Fulgrim. He is placed in stasis and interred in the Temple of Correction on Macragge. Note: the reference states that this took place a hundred years after the Second Founding, but does not specify the exact year. (US WD 263, 2001, p.22)

698/M41 - 705/M41 Corinthian Crusade. Calgar elected leader of Marine force including Ultramarines, Lamenters, Marines Errant, Angels of Absolution, and Silver Skulls on a 7 year crusade. Ork empire of Charadon suffers series of heavy defeats, delaying the invasion of Waaagh Argluk by 30 years. (Codex: Space Marines, 1998, p.36)

One of the most famous Space Marine actions of the mid-41st Millennium, the Corinth Crusade was conceived of and led by the legendary master of the Ultramarines Marneus Calgar. The crusade comprised the combined forces of Ultramarines, Angels of Absolution, Lamenters, Silver Skulls, Scythes of the Emperor, and the Marines Errant (and assorted Imperial Guard regiments). During this highly successful Crusade, the Marines Errant were singled out for particular honor for the rescue at great risk to themselves of the embattled Ultramarines 3rd Company. The Ultramarines had become trapped on the dust moon of Lhak after the destruction of their strike cruisers above the planetoid, and fighting off fearful odds the Marines Errant battered their way through the encircling horde of freebooters and rampships to extract their progenitor-kin from the surface. In recognition of this deed, Marneus Calgar award the Marines Errant one of the Ultramarines' own sacred relic blades as a s sign of the mutually shed blood of the two Chapters in gratitude. (Imperial Armor Volume 9, 2010, p.76)

At the outset of the Corinth Crusade, the Ultramarines called for allies to aid them in their holy task of scourging the mighty Ork Empires of the Charadon region. Mindful of the ancient debt they believed they owed the Ultramarines for their intercession many years before during the disastrous Siege of Corilia, the Lamenters answered Marneus Calgar's call. After a terribly pyrrhic victory, the Lamenters took the almost unprecedented step of refusing the honor of an Iron Halo in reward for their efforts from Calgar's hands." Battle of Arconar- Calgar defeats coalition of Eldar Raiders on the feral world of Arconar, scattering their forces and capturing their bases both on and off world. (Codex: Space Marines, 1998, p.36)

866/M41 Ultramarines attempt to cleanse the planet Sabulorb of a genestealer infestation, though some escape their notice. (Chaos Child, 2002, p.28-29 describes the event as happening 75 years earlier, and p. 240 states that the Tyranids' infiltration of the galaxy had begun two hundred years ago, so I'm forward-dating 125 years from Hive Fleet Behemoth's first appearance in 741/M41.) <See also entry for Ca. 047/M39 for alternate dating.>

4001001/M32 Ultra-Marine chapter founded during the inter-legionary wars. Upon its inception, the Emperor gave the chapter the number 13 - formerly the number of one of the treacher-legions now banished to the Eye of Terror. (WD97, p. 39)

i think that has been superceded by current fluff. the ultramarines were the 13th legion. your WD article implies they werent firstfounding.

During the Rogue Trader era, the Ultramarines were in fact not First Founding. And WD97 does sound suspiciously like being around that time...

This timeline does not make any judgement calls about what or has or hasn't superceded this or that entry. The closest it gets is color-coding the differant editions. It merely catalogues everything in order. If you want to start another discussion about canoncity or something, please start a differant thread.

oh i see. you are right its for the best we get it all and let people take what they want from it. much more ultramarine!

i take it that any dates and events that contradict eachother (should be few and far between) will be included on this basis? im not critisising by the way, just wondering which way you are taking this!

i am actually for all old fluff to be included, as it will be nice to see how things have changed!

Absolutely. Spotting such contraditions is amusing to me. This timeline will greatly assist in that. I was also curious about how many differant places the Ultramarines were at the same time. That could be funny.

The Vindicator's role in the Lothern I pacification is documented in some of the earliest Heresy fluff (Codex Titanicus, 1989). The Ultramarines aren't named in that souce as the originating Legion, though. I will have to plough through Imperial Armour, vol. II soon. I know there are some "Macragge-pattern" vehicles in there.

Heck, no time like the present, wot?

1224027/M40 The Macragge pattern Land Raider Prometheus's technical specifications are written by the Adeptus Mechanicus Departmento Manafacturum. Note that this does not seem to be the actual design date of this vehicle. (Imperial Armour vol. II, p. 78)

1224035/M40 The MkV Macragge pattern Damocles Command Rhino's technical specifications are written by the Adeptus Mechanicus Departmento Manafacturum. Note that this does not seem to be the actual design date of this vehicle. (Imperial Armour vol. II, p. 112)

M38 Captain Agies of the 2nd company earns an honour badge, purity seal, and dedication scroll. He is later interred into a dreadnought. (Imperial Armour vol. II, p. 136)

It occurs to me that we may need to do a certain amount of "connecting the dots" here. Say we find a reference that says that the Ultramarines were present during the Second War for Armageddon, but doesn't state the date in question. Then we find another source which states the date of Armageddon 2, but doesn't mention the Ultramarines. The two references should both be used for an entry into the timeline. I will start a new category for situations where we know the name of the action, but not the exact date. If further research nets us the date in question, we can move the entry into the timeline proper.

Meanwhile, a few more goodies. I will place them before the rest of the 745/M41 entries, as the 3rd company is "in transit" to Joran IV.

6342745/M41 Barchi Scouring. 5th company suffered heavy losses, including its Chapain. (Codex: Space Marines, 1998, p. 46)

6500745/M41 2nd company, under the command of Captain Agemman, is mobilised on Talassar. (Codex: Space Marines, 1998, p. 46)

Majority of 3rd company is in transit to Joran IV as part of the Joran IV Retaliation Force. (Codex: Space Marines, 1998, p. 46)

4th company is at full combat strength. Captain Idaeus is in battle command of elements of the 4th, 1st, and 10th companies as the Protection Force for Explorator Fleet Delpha. (Codex: Space Marines, 1998, p. 46)

7th company serving as Master Guards on Caeser. (Codex: Space Marines, 1998, p. 46)

Majority of 8th company on extended combat training on Gava II. (Codex: Space Marines, 1998, p. 46)

Elements of the 1st, 6th, 8th, 9th, and 10th companies engaged in counter-incursion activities in the Gerio Sector. (Codex: Space Marines, 1998, p. 46)

"Strategic Disposition of the Ultramarines Chapter (6500745.41)" is compiled by Lorex Vandilus. (Codex: Space Marines, 1998, p. 46)

Here's one for the new category. I'm pretty sure that it's in 999/M41 in the 4th edition rulebook; I'll check it when I get home.

941/M41 or 942/41 Ultramarines involved in Second War for Armageddon. (The Second War For Armageddon - Part 1 states that Ghazghkull invaded in 941, and the Battle for Armageddon Rulebook p. 20 says that the Space Marines arrived in turn 3, 9 months later. Ultramarines mentioned in Battle for Armageddon Rulebook p. 3.)

EDIT: Whoops! Never mind! Already on the timeline!

Why is Marneus Calgar older than his birth date?

Simple - because the transition from Andy Chambers and Gav Thorpe to Graham McNeill as head Marine fluff honcho didn't go as smooth as it should. If you think this is bad, imagine how the Blood Angels player felt when they discovered that "oldest Marine evar" Dante is in fact owned by 300 years by Lysander, who's even dead.

(Just for the record - the previous codex states that Sergeant Lysander got his first Imperial Laurel in 567.M40, the current one states that Captain Lysander leads the Fists against Hive Fleet Leviathan, which is stated in the Tyranids codex as being year 997.M41 - that means Lysander is 1,430 years old, not counting the time it took him to be born, be initiated into the Marines, and attain the rank of Sergeant. As for his death. it is noted several places that the current Captain of the First Company is someone else, though I can't remember the name just this moment...)

I think it's down to the current fluff writers being sloppy, really. The Lysander deal is obviously a case of "let's just promote this really cool model with a nice scenario shot against... how about the Nids?" (even though they ARE fighting Behemoth models in the picture - another case of sloppy, methinks?), but as for Marneus, I simply think it's down to the current fluffers being sloppy with their research and background development. It'd taken them a few hours extra to get all the names, dates and places right, but it seems that this is too much to ask at the moment. Who needs consistency when you can get cool action scenes and drama, eh?

Nah, it's not McNeill's fault. The transition happened between 1st and 2nd edition, before any of the names you mentioned were involved with the Ultramarines. Basically, they decided to make the Marines long-lived, and readjusted the Ultramarines' fluff to fit this concept.
